Toveka caught the hint of jest and smiled. She wasn’t one for jokes, but his comment was enough to ease some of the tension between her shoulder blades. As they arrived at the door, his deductions and suggestions made sense. “We shouldn’t risk the suits’ powers. We aren’t sure what’s the power issue on the other side, or if it’s tied into the ship.” She pocketed her tricorder and rummaged around in her small pouch for a moment. Coming up with the tool needed for opening the power panel beside the door, she began removing the panel, the small attachment tips stayed in the panel holes because of self seating edges. She set the panel on the floor, removed her tricorder once more and pulled the jumper cord from the wall.

Glancing back at her companion, Toveka shrugged, a rare nervous gesture, and murmured, “Here goes…” She plugged the tricorder in and tried to get the power to sinc up enough to get the door to open.

The doors could be heard powering up, and then they began to open with a vibration that, if the sound couldn’t be heard in space, the vibration could definitely be felt. Then they jammed. They were open enough so that a hand, arm, could be pushed through and in the space beyond could be seen a large device illuminated only by the light of their suits flickering through the door, and something else they couldn’t yet make out.

“Keep the power going.” Duncan said to Brine as he put his shoulder and body between the doors, and pushed them to help them open. For long seconds it was hopeless, and then with a sudden release the doors opened enough so that they could walk through unhindered. Pulling himself upright again, Duncan nodded and grinned at Brine. “Good work,” he said, “now lets go and see what treasure this wreck has for us.”

Toveka caught him by the arm as he slid back when the door gave way.

Walking through the cargo doors Duncan flicked his light to wide beams and pulled out his own tricorder again. The power reading was almost off the scale, but no radiation could be detected. Duncan frowned as he looked at the readings. “Toveka,” he said, using her first name, “this energy is huge, it’s reading off the chart and there is no anti-matter reactor in here, and it’s clean.” He said with an obvious emphasis on the last word. “No radiation, and it is reading more powerful in magnitudes over a warp reactor. What the heck have they got?” Duncan looked up from his tricorder and Brine and paused again. “Oh.”

She pulled out her own tricorder and matched his readings. “It makes so sense,” she murmured as she caught the use of her familial name. He only used it when overly excited or scared. She was glad it was the previous this time.

The wall and ceiling above them had been ripped open and was exposed to space, the light of the Romulan star was what had been illuminating the room faintly. Most of the cargo on board had long since floated out and away, but the large device where the reading was coming from, seemed bolted to the ground of the Warbird. It was far too large to move.

Walking forwards, Duncan and Brine soon identified a panel on the machine with a console next to it. Like the doors, the console was without power although the device itself had lights on it indicating it was powered somehow. The panel had a series of markings on it that Duncan couldn’t make out. To Toveka, it would translate as Primary Omega Stabilization Core.

“We could open this,” Duncan said to her, “the console may have information we need if we can get it running again.”

“It says ‘Primary… Omega.. Stabilization… Core…’” she translated and frowned as her own gaze followed his up the walls and thru the empty ceiling breach. “Something tells me things didn’t go as planned.” She looked back at the panel and then to Duncan. “I think that, given this amount of ‘clean power’, something has to give elsewhere. I recommend caution in opening this.” She set the tricorder into her pouch and pulled out a panel tool in hopes the compatibility would be the same. “Are you ready?” She said as she knelt down to remove the lower fasteners first on his command as she looked up to him for confirmation.
