Snip

Trico looked at Lily for a moment, and gave one last tiny hiccup. A small flash of flame and a puff of smoke came out of the corner of her mouth and drifted up, thinning and disappearing as it went. Duncan had been just as surprised as this person when she had developed that ‘special skill’ not long after reaching her ‘teen’ year and had spent some time working out how exactly she did it. She wasn’t normally allowed to do it here in his quarters, but when they went for weekends to the planet she was allowed to light the camp fire, and cook marshmallows. She liked marshmallows almost as much as bacon, and the brown meat sticks this person gave her she liked too, but they were spicy.

The door to Duncan’s quarters opened and he walked out. His trousers and shoes were the same but now he wore a casual and loose, but very smart button up shirt that sat open along the collar with sleeves folded and pinned back along his forearms. It seemed to be some kind of dark red-grape kind of color that almost shifted in the light as he walked. “Okey, I am about ready to go.” He said as he walked by the pair on the couch, then paused and raised his head from his cuffs. He seemed to sniff for a moment, as if he could smell something.

“Yep, so I am,” Lily said flopping in a lounging position on the couch that was far different than the one she was in before Duncan arrived. He had said make herself comfortable but this was a pose of I live here and have been for the past three years with one leg slung over the end of the couch.

Shrugging slightly, Duncan carried on to his liquor cabinet and looked over the bottles on display. “What kind of drink to you like if you’re relaxing somewhere Lily?” he asked her, “just asking for a friend.” He said and glanced up at her, grinning.

“Tequila,” she said and then after pondering the thought added, “beer.”

Taking a bottle from the shelf he stood again and made his way to the replicator, placing a few things into a small basket that had been sitting beside the cabinet. “So how did you two go? Get to know each other a little did you?”

“That’s an understatement. Don’t look around at the couch. Act natural ,” she said and replied almost simultaneously in her head.

Duncan looked over at them and noticed… Trico had no food in front of her and no bowl. “Did you two get so busy getting acquainted that you forgot to feed her?” He laughed, “or did Trico give you the sad eyes and try to convince you to give her bacon? She loves bacon but it reacts with her,” he made a hand motion around his mouth “hydrogen glands inside her throat. They are a really neat little creation of nature that lets her breathe fire for a short time, as well as helping her fly as she gets bigger and older.”

“Your bird doubles as a mini dragon and you decide to mention that now,” Lily said giving him a quizzical look. “She doesn’t get....hurt....breathing bouts of flame....right? I mean if she were to start roasting things like…her veggies?”

Turning to the replicator he produced a bowl of Trico’s normal food and walked over to her, placing it down on the ground beside the creature, giving her head a pat and holding out his hand to Lily.

“She doesn’t do it here, she knows it isn’t really safe with the state the station is in and she has a lot of intelligence. It doesn’t hurt her either, it doesn’t actually combust until it is out of her mouth and away from her, the mixture is volatile but her biology made it completely safe to her internally.” Trico looked up at him with large eyes, she did indeed seem to know what Duncan was saying and with a glance at Lily, she looked back to the covered section of couch that had been burnt a little and made the odd little chirping bark sound. “What is it girl?” Duncan asked her, scratching behind her horns with his fingers. That produced a loud purr but Trico just glanced at Lily again and chirp-barked. “She seems to have a fascination with you, Lily,” Duncan told her, “maybe you should come by more often. Ready to go?”

“Yes,” Lily jumped up quickly and made her way over to Duncan taking his arm in the classical couple stroll. She tried to not pull him from the residence but her gait might be considered by some to be at a spritely pace.

Reaching the door a moment later, Duncan stood aside and let Lily walk out first. That Trico liked her was a very good thing, he had always known the small animal to be an excellent judge of character and there weren’t many people on the station that Trico had met that she didn’t like. Looking back at Trico and waving goodbye, Duncan paused again and tilted his head in wonder. A cushion was missing from the couch, and a throw over had been moved from his chair to that same couch. He didn’t have time to wonder where the cushion was as he looked back to Lily and smiled. He had told her to make herself at home after all.

“Are you sure we are okay to leave her alone in there? I mean have you ever had something…oh…spontaneously…combust? You know due to her condition and all,” Lily glanced around everywhere but where she would actually look at Duncan. If he saw her face right now…he might have questions and she did not want to say she almost killed his pet and burned down his quarters in the span of ten minutes. Even for her that would be something new.

Lily

Duncan paused and turned to face Lily, lifting his hand and turning her head to him gently with his fingers on her chin while his free hand found hers. His eyes were soft, but they looked at Lily intently.

“Not once has Trico ever used her skill inside on purpose, she has complete control over it unless she hiccups or something, and even then her biology means that is rare and doesn’t happen for no reason. Trust me Lily, she’s just fine. I’m really touched by your concern for her.” Duncan dropped his fingers from her chin, realizing he had kept them there. “You’ll like where we’re going,” he looked over and nodded at the nearby turbo-lift, “but it’s not going to go anywhere and we can always do this again, if you want. If it’ll make you feel better, we could stay in at mine with Trico and watch movies and have pizza, just nothing with pepperoni, it makes Trico sneeze.”

Lt Rhodes, CSO

“What happens when she sneezes,” Lily said breaking the quasi romantic moment with a burst of laughter. “Does she have concentrated acid for snot?”

“Acid snot? Really?” Duncan asked her and looked down at her, he couldn’t help grinning. “Don’t you ever let her hear you say that,” he laughed, “or you’ll hurt her feelings. “It isn’t acid snot,” he told her, it’s a complex mixture of gases and liquids that… ok, lets just say it’s Acid Snot.” As the thoughts had run through his mind of how to describe it, he quickly decided that Lily would likely come up with something worse to describe it, like flaming spew. He decided to run with the lesser of two evils.

Looking up at Duncan, Lily couldn’t help but focus in on his eyes. They were a bright, crisp blue that seemed to stare through you yet had a soft side that was warm and comforting. It reminded lily of Duncan’s personality. The man was intelligent and serious. He also had a charmingly funny side that made her smile far too easily. This man was not the type of guy she typically took a chance on. Rhodes was the chief science officer which meant he probably expected his people to always show up, didn’t understand the importance of sleeping in, or why being 15 minutes late wasn’t always a bad thing.

Lily pondered his words about how to spend the evening and her thoughts about his character. It was true that Duncan was far more sophisticated and formal than most men she dallied with however he had something simmering under the surface. Duncan’s inner spirit was adventurous, daring, and risk taking. It was just dying to be released. Maybe that was why she had met him. Maybe fate wanted Duncan’s inner wild child, who Lily would secretly call Deke, to shine in the universe.

“Let’s do that tomorrow night. I’m dressed and we are off the couch. Let’s rumble with some raiders, poke fun at a few pirates, go three rounds at a market with a Ferengi. The night is young. Let’s have some fun. Lead me where you want to go my sexy chaperone,” Lily said taking his hand and swinging it slightly as they walked

“Rumble with some raiders?” Duncan echoed and grinned at her, raising his eyebrow. He had been slightly unsure of where exactly to go, he had options, as well as a promise made to a friend earlier in the day that he had thought about conveniently ‘forgetting’ up till this point. “You want some fun? At this time of night on the station most fun is behind closed doors Lily, but, I think I might have something a bit more exciting than rumbling with pesky raiders.” They reached the turbo lift door and it slid aside, Duncan giving Lily’s hand a squeeze as they stepped inside and the doors slid shut.

“I dunno,” she said in a skeptical tone. “Persnickety pirates play pinochle pretty....darn good.” Pointing a finger at Duncan she added “don’t judge. That was a lot of P’s on short notice,” she winked at him. “So are you going to tell me where we are going or do you not have a plan. You can tell me your bingo on ideas. I won’t judge…much,” Lily smiles at him.

“I’ll tell you what, I’m going to take you to two places. If you can keep up with me at the first, and the second makes you smile then tomorrow night you get to choose the Pizza and the Movie, as long as it’s something Indiana Jones like and the pizza doesn’t have pineapple on it.”

Lily gave Duncan an disgusted look. “Pineapple? On pizza? You heathen. And I thought you were cultured. Just for the record I am silently judging you now.”

The doors opened and Duncan led Lily out. The turbolift had let them out into a dark, narrow corridor area in the depths of the space station that looked like it would be dark and deserted even in the busy part of the day, let alone this time of night. Minutes later, and they had reached a door. It was bare with no signage or markings, and looked like every other door in the corridor that they had passed. “Are you ready?” Duncan asked her, smiling very slightly and moving his fingers between hers so that they were intertwined, not just holding hands. “Once we’re in, there’s no backing out. You gotta have my back, and I’ll have yours.”

Lily’s other hand slid into the bag she was carrying. Why do the hot, sexy rich ones always have a crazy streak, she thought as her hand closed around the small tube. Bringing it to her lips she blew out a large piercing sound from the whistle. She doubted anyone would hear the emergency whistle but it was worth a shot. It would also give Duncan a chance to fix things if he wasn’t going to blow her out an airlock and leave her for dead.

Lily.
