“Okay!” The girl nodded excitedly before running off back to her friends to tell them about the monogeriatric volcanoes they were going to make out of coffee and turn the whole classroom into a volcano.

“Where did you learn all that?” Duncan asked Lily, admittedly impressed at not only her knowledge of volcanoes but of a small and isolated place on Earth.

“Oh that is an interseting story. See I was bouncing about and someone told me about a place called New Zealand on earth. They said the scenery was breathtaking but not to eat the fish at MacDonald’s. They use a different one.” Lilly wrinkled up her nose. Getting comfortable she leaned against the wall as she began to recant the story of her stint as a volcanologist. “Heathens I tell you. Who would want to use anything but Alaskan Pollack? I mean even the name. Hoki....sounds like hokum. Anyway so I was out and about one day and I....”

“Look, tell me later, lets go and meet the kids shall we?” The teacher pointed them towards a table she had set up for Duncan, where many of the kids were now gathering around. Taking Lily’s hand, he led her towards the table.

“So do you moonlight to pay the bills as a chemistry teacher or do you just love science that much,” Lilly asked as she followed Duncan to the expected location. The room was typical of any science room and brought a smile to Lilly’s face.

“I sometimes help out the local night school,” he told her quietly as they walked. “I’m not a teacher, but I don’t sleep a lot so when I can’t sleep I come down here from time to time. Mrs Rose asked if I could take a class, something different for the kids. Tonight it’s ‘How Volcano’s Work’ and next week is a trip to Gamma Tiltium to see one up close, after that, it’s ‘Bring A Pet’ evening. Last time we did that we had an ‘incident’ when Bradleys Bolian Cane Hopper ate Rebeccas Denevan Butter Fly. It wasn’t a good combination but it was exciting.”

“No way a field trip. I will chaperone. Remind me to sign up. Kids love me and who doesn’t love the field trip lunch like your mom made,” Lilly said again as if this was knowledge common to the universe.

“A field trip lunch is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that gets smashed and wrapped around a drink so that it is about as flat as a pancake with the jelly seeping through enough that it dyes your bread pink or purple but not enough that you get sticky. I tried for years to make them when I was not on a field trip but it’s the backpack that is the secret ingredient. The bouncing and tossing of your lunch in it as you run from place to place is the key to the perfect field trip sandwich. I will make them and transport them for us,” Lilly said self assuredly.

Duncan glanced Lily’s way with a look of horror, just for an instant. “No, no it’s fine, let me handle the field trip food. I’ve got something else in mind for you to help out with,” Duncan lied, outright. It was a better end result than squashed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

They reached the table where a dozen children had already gathered and whispered among themselves. On the table, was a large lump of rock and a model volcano with a hollow crater at the top. Next to it, were a pile of metal spoons and normal balloons for the kids to blow up. “This one,” Duncan said with a grin as he picked up a balloon and a spoon, “is so you can all make your own Lightning.” One boy, a blond haired chubby faced kid elbowed a freckle faced girl next to him. “Can we zap Rebecca and make her hair stand up?” He asked, the girl stuck out her tongue at the boy, squealed and ran to Lily and took her hand. “Bradley, stop it or I’ll get the lady with the whistle to dunk you in the volcano!”

“Are you serious,” Lily looked at Duncan stunned. “You can make a cattle prod with a balloon and spoon. You are a man of many talents I shall take my time exploring.”

Duncan paused and looked up at her, a slight grin showing on his face. “You never made lightning with a balloon and spoon? Well, looks like I have quite a few things that you need to see.”

“Ahemmmm,” the teacher cleared her voice clearly seeing the expression on Lily’s face and understanding the words deeper meaning. She cast a side glance at the indomitable Duncan Rhodes. The British are a hardly lot she thought to herself before clapping her hands to get the classes attention on her. “Okay so Mr. Rhodes will be asking you to have your listening ears on, mouths quiet, bodies calm, and eyes watching,” the teacher explained. “Mr. Rhodes,” she gestured for him to take her spot.

Grabbing Duncan’s elbow, Lily quickly whispered, “Bodies calm? Is this some lie new aged hippy free thought school or is this an actual degree earning institution?”

Lily Locksley

Pulling Lily with him to the front, Duncan spoke quietly “You didn’t notice the Klingon kid? You don’t want him to get excited, he’s all clumsy arms and feet. Bodies calm just means we don’t have to talk to the parents about black eyes and such.”

“Alright, most of you know me,” Duncan said, then held out his hand to Lily. “For this session, this is Ms Locksley, my beautiful assistant. Now you have all got a metal spoon and a balloon, so the first thing is, to blow it up. If you can’t tie it off, just let my assistant know and she will be right there to help.” Duncan gave Lily a big wink as he said it. “If you pop one, I have extra’s and please, don’t swallow the spoon, Bradley.”

Once all the children had their balloons blown up and tied off, Duncan came back to the front again. “Okay now, I want everybody to rub the balloons on your hair, your own hair, Bradley,” Duncan said as the chubby kid began to turn to the girl next to him. “You are going to do it for two full minutes, and when we get to the end Mrs Rose is going to turn down the lights, then, I want you all to slowly move the spoon towards the balloon. What we are doing is making a basic and harmless lightning from the static electricity on the balloon, and you will see a flash when it happens.”

Turning to Lily, he handed her his balloon. “Want to rub my balloon? After that we can spoon it together, there will be enough of a spark between the two of us.”
