Pulling Lily with him to the front, Duncan spoke quietly “You didn’t notice the Klingon kid? You don’t want him to get excited, he’s all clumsy arms and feet. Bodies calm just means we don’t have to talk to the parents about black eyes and such.”

“Yes, but black eyes and parent conferences are what makes you grow up normal. I mean Duncan,” Lily sighed as if he was not understanding the easiest concept ever. “Don’t you remember the time where you sat at home waiting for your parents to come home from talking the teacher because you tied that kid to the tree at recess and forgot him. I mean it wasn’t on purpose but he had eaten half your sandwich on the field trip and you spent all day working so hard to get it right so you waited until you had your chance but since no one knew about the sandwich you got in trouble for bullying the bully. Then you sweated it out until your parents got back home. Everyone needs experiences like that right,” Lily said only pausing long enough to take a sip of coffee.

The silence in the air was almost palpable. For the first time, Lily had the sneaking suspicion that Duncan and she might not have had the same basic rituals growing up as kids.

“Mr. Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes,” the teacher said with each repetition getting louder.

Duncan....I think you are up,” Lily motioned to the front of the room that teacher was head nodding towards

“Alright, most of you know me,” Duncan said, then held out his hand to Lily. “For this session, this is Ms Locksley, my beautiful assistant. Now you have all got a metal spoon and a balloon, so the first thing is, to blow it up. If you can’t tie it off, just let my assistant know and she will be right there to help.” Duncan gave Lily a big wink as he said it. “If you pop one, I have extra’s and please, don’t swallow the spoon, Bradley.”

Bradly opened his lips up enough so that the balloon popped from his lips and sputtered about the room until the squeaky sound of the air leaving was replaced by a soft plopping as it landed on the adjacent table.

While Duncan’s attention was focused on the wafting balloon Lily picked up her ballon and was making the kids at the table next to her giggle as she blew it up and then deflated it over and over while letting her eyes cross.

Once all the children had their balloons blown up and tied off, Duncan came back to the front again. “Okay now, I want everybody to rub the balloons on your hair, your own hair, Bradley,” Duncan said as the chubby kid began to turn to the girl next to him. “You are going to do it for two full minutes, and when we get to the end Mrs Rose is going to turn down the lights, then, I want you all to slowly move the spoon towards the balloon. What we are doing is making a basic and harmless lightning from the static electricity on the balloon, and you will see a flash when it happens.”

Turning to Lily, he handed her his balloon. “Want to rub my balloon? After that we can spoon it together, there will be enough of a spark between the two of us.”

“God how do you know exactly what to say to a woman,” Lily said slowly raising the balloon up to Duncan’s head. It was then that Lily began to rub far more vigorously than probably needed. After several good swipes, she lowered the balloon and smiled at him staring at specifically at his hair. “The messy look suits you,” she said toying the balloon as she talked. Holding the nipple of the balloon she tapped her sweater as she talked. For the first time this evening Lily was at a loss for words. Duncan was always so put together but even now with his spikey ends all askew he looked darn good.

“Don’t get too used to it,” Duncan replied to her, but he smiled as he said it and tried in vain to tidy his hair again by running his fingers through it, which only served to make it slightly worse than it was.

“So you ready to make some lightning,” she asked. As the lights dimmed and then went out Lily decided that she was not going to wait all night to make sure things would work out between them. When the room went dark Lily made her move. Standing on her toes Lily moved forwarded fast. Part of it was that she wanted to surprise him and the other part was she had been waiting to do this all night. As her lips touched his however all the static electricity that had built up from rubbing his hair with the balloon coupled with the brushing of the latex on her wool sweater caused a jolt of electricity to crack across her lips. The arc was so bright and large it attracted the attention of the entire room. The kid’s attention was held as Lily’s yelp broke through the classroom. The lights came back on as her hand went to her lips with a shocked look in her eyes. “Oh my god my lip,” Lily said touching it gingerly from where the shock had made it almost numb.

“Oh my god,” Duncan echoed, his fingers touching his own lip which was also feeling tender from the shock of static electricity. “Why would you…” Duncan began, but of course the ever attentive children came to his aid.

“Mr. Rhodes did you just bite her lip,” the Klingon boy asked in his deep baritone voice. “You know in Klingon society you have now taken her for a mate.”

“Ewwwwwwwww,” a girl called Michelle said, in a long and drawn out way indicating she had put two-and-two together. “Is that why you bit me at my birthday party?” She fixed him with a very serious look and crossed her arms. “Do you want to marry me?” The Klingon boy shook his head so vigorously so that his lips flopped back and forth. “No! I only bit you because you were going to stick that pin into me! I’m not one of those Donkey things! That’s different from taking a mate.” The girl eyed him suspiciously. “But you just said. Mrs Rose! You just heard him say it didn’t you?”

“No no no Mr. Rhodes was not mating with Ms. Locksley,” the teacher quickly stepped in. “That is not how the Klingon mating ritual is established and you Michelle are not mated to anyone.”

“Then how is it established?” Bradly asked sitting up and looking alert for the first time pulling out his Padd to take notes.

“Well,” Duncan began, “There also has to be poetry, and throwing things in Klingon culture. Then the two people..”

“Who love each other,” Lily added. “I mean if you don’t love each other and participate in a mating ritual there are so many things that can go wrong. Well not wrong. Klingon mating rituals are not wrong just violent and can have....unexpected consequences…that…last a....life time,” Lily stumbled over her words. Leaning her head towards Duncan she talked in a whisper out the side of her mouth. “Did we cover biology and the irdsbay andyay ethay eesbay,” Lily tried to cover up her question about mating with a dose of Ferengi latin.

“We are not talking about Klingon mating rituals. We are talking about volcanos,” the teacher’s frustration suddenly erupted into a bout of yelling. The end of her sentence was punctuated by the ringing of a bell signaling it was time for a break. “Okay break for ten minutes,” the teacher waved her hands about.

Duncan rubbed his lip one more time and then looked at Lily as the children in front of them disappeared like they had suddenly turned into mist as recess wasn’t to be wasted, especially when the teacher had begun to turn the shade of red that they all knew the warning signs about. “Did you kiss me?” he asked her, then grinned a little. “Or at least, did you try to?”

“Nope. There was a bee in the room. I think he got me and then you,” she teased with a huge grin. “Did you see what I did there,” Lily asked with a huge grin hoping he caught onto her birds and the bees comment earlier as her response for now. “That bugger is fast. Let’s hope the lights don’t go out again. Who knows where he could land. Oh....oh,” Lily swatted about her head as if there were a bee flying around. “Dag nabbit I think he is back. Watch out, Duncan. He could be coming for you again,” she said a bit slower locking her eyes to his.

“The two of you!” The teacher said, turning to them and glaring at them while adjusting her glasses. Duncan was sure they had begun to fog over. “Into my office, now!” She turned and visibly stormed into her small, schoolroom dominating office that each and every child feared to be called into. Then she turned at the door and held it open, pointing in to the office and glaring at them as if they were about to have a lifetime worth of detention heading their way. “You know,” Duncan said quietly as he reached down and took Lily’s hand, “I think we might of had the wrong science experiment in mind.”

“So you do want to learn about biology,” she giggled. “It is far more fun than chemistry even though some forms of chemistry have their merits.”

“Run!” Duncan said to Lily quietly but urgently and then turned on his heels, pulling Lily with him and giving a her a grin.

Unfortunately, the door to the corridor did not automatically open and Duncan ran straight into it. Being a School door it opened only at the use of the control panel, ensuring the children couldn’t simply escape. “Blast it!” Duncan said as he bounced of the door, still holding Lily’s hand tight. Hitting the panel repeatedly the voice of the teacher came behind them. “Mr Rhodes! Get back here this instant!”

“Aren’t you some big wig on the base. Don’t you have override controls,” she waved her hands laughing. “Do something before I doubt your rank of Lt.”

The door opened and Duncan and Lily fell through, coming to a stop on the corridor wall opposite the door, Duncan holding her in his arms as the door closed on the approaching teacher. “I’m not sure about you, but I can think of a few much better places we could be right now.” He paused for a moment and smiled at her as he looked down into her large, beautiful eyes. He was much closer now than he had been before, close enough to feel the curves hidden beneath her clothing and warmth of her body against his.

“I don’t know. Maybe if you had been my science teacher I would have gotten an A or at least been the teacher’s pet. You make science interesting,” Lily pointed out in a tone that would be hard to know if she was teasing or being serious.

The door opened again, and Duncan laughed, pulling Lily with him as they escaped down the corridor. Duncan appeared to know where he was going as the took a number of turns and even an old fashioned maintenance stairway down to the next lowest level. Finally, Duncan paused outside one final door with a badly faded plaque on the outside that could no longer be read. “Do you think we lost her?” He said as he turned and pulled Lily closer to him, smiling down at her and curling a stray hair of hers behind one ear with his fingertips. “There was one more place I wanted to show you tonight, although it looks like we forgot our snacks and drink. Don’t make a single move towards that whistle either, Ms Locksley.”

“Frontier folk honor,” she said holding up her three fingers to her brow in the official salute of the Federation Frontiers Folk. The salute as an amalgamation of the girl scouts and boy scouts with its own flair added. In the early twenty-first century, the scouts had a major overhaul forcing the male club to accept females but allowing the females scouting club to still exclude men. A hundred years later it was shown that this was not actually separate but equal because boys were not allowed to join the elitist female movement forcing both organizations to disband and create the Frontier folks. Lily had obviously been a member of the organization with the way she effortlessly popped off the club’s official greeting.
