Duncan was in the Science department and at that particular moment, was locked in a life or death struggle with one of his departments more temperamental guests. Well to Duncan it was more of an annoyance, but to the temperamental and grouchy octopus that resided in one of the specimen tanks the fact that the tall Human wanted to pick him up and put him back in his tank was not only not the plan, but offensive when there was bacon left in the bowl that the Human’s annoyingly popular dog-cat-bird thing hadn’t eaten yet and the green goop the Human had in the other specimen tank was fun to play with. “Let go,” Duncan said to the little creature as he tried to pry the tentacles loose from the desk leg it was holding on to. “You can have the bacon, just let go and stop working out how to disarm the tank’s locks.”

It was then that the Chief Science Officer’s comm-badge came alive with the request for him to book in with a routine psychological assessment. Letting go of the small creature Duncan stood up and sighed, tapping his own badge in reply.

=/\= Lieutenant this is Duncan Rhodes. Bribing the crew with offers of cake is highly unprofessional and just plain sneaky. What kind of cake are you offering, and do you have coffee? =/\= His face and voice were completely straight and that matched his usual stance and bearing, his English accent making it sound all at once formal and completely normal yet his eyes held a humor that wouldn’t be seen unless someone knew him well enough to look into them.

Taking a piece of bacon from the plate, he dangled it in front of the Octopus who immediately let go of the desk leg and reached for it, meaning Duncan was able to scoop the creature up and return it to the tank as it happily munched the bacon piece and smugly nuzzled into the Human as the dog-cat-bird thing raised it’s head from the bed in the corner and watched it’s Human put the many-armed thing back in it’s tank.

Akane smiled as Lt Rhodes replied. =^= Lieutenant, there is a distinct difference between a bribe and an incentive… =^= she started as she noted his British accent and quickly jogged her memory of the most well loved British cake recipes. =^= But I do have a vast array of ‘incentives’ on offer, I’m somewhat of an amateur baker. Can I interest you in a victoria sponge with fresh cream and strawberries, or perhaps a lemon drizzle cake? I also have a freshly made carrot cake… =^= she added, hoping one of those would tickle the Lt’s fancy, she did still have a few left in the arsenal, one of which no self-respecting Brit would be able to resist. She realised she was starting to dribble she cleared her throat and awaited his reply.

Having secured the octopus in the tank, for the time being at least, Duncan waited a moment to reply as he washed his hands and made sure his cuffs were neat and straight, then looked at Trico lying in her basket. She was looking up at him with large eyes and a slightly tilted head and Duncan sighed.

“You know cake gives you wind,” he told the creature which elicited a small whine in response. “So what if it has cream and strawberries? Or lemon drizzle? You know those are bad for your cholesterol as well.” At that, Trico gave him a very disappointed look to which the tall and stiff backed Englishman crossed his arms. “Fine, you wheedler, but you know I have my limits.” Trico chirp-barked happily at him as he touched his comm-badge.

=/\= Lieutenant Sakai, you’re getting close but lets keep vegetables in cake off the menu lest it damage our budding friendship, shall we? =/\= Duncan said as he eyed Trico and saw that the little creature approved heartily. =/\= Now you must have something that can seal the deal Lieutenant, don’t hold back on me now. When would you like me to visit? =/\=

Akane chuckled at she replied. =/\= Whenever suits you Lieutenant, I’m free for the rest of the day. Just pop over whenever you’re ready. =/\= she added as she took a delicious sticky toffee pudding out and set it on the desk. =/\= I’ve got a piece of cake here with your name on… =/\=

Without replying, Duncan closed the comm line and looked at Trico. “Well, you know you better come with me.” The small creature raised her head and gave her odd chirp-bark. “Yes, you got me into this, so you can come with me. If I give you the signal, you play sick remember? That way we can escape.” Trico gave her human what could only be described as a very disappointed look. “Come on then, let’s get this over with.”

Minutes later and Duncan, with Trico trotting beside him with her wings folded back along her body, arrived outside the door to the counselors office. “Alright, Lets do this.” Reaching forward, Duncan pressed the chime as Trico sat down patiently beside him.
