Jessica sat on the bed and stared off into space deep in thought. So much was said and revealed in the past fifteen minutes. She had some decisions to make. Getting up she did not get dressed and head downstairs as Aedan requested. Instead, she took a long shower. Next, she did her hair and makeup before finally getting dressed and heading out of their bedroom. Not making eye contact as she descended the marble stairs Jessica just began to speak. “My mother says everyone you love should get a one time pass to sound like an arse and not have it held against them. Today is that day for you. I will keep Garvis death off the record but you need to know something. I did not marry you for the money or the glitz or the glamor. I married you because I love you. I am quite happy though that you took our first day of being married to point out that if I would be leaving this marriage it would be with the same cardboard box filled with my things as the day I entered it. Wanna know a secret though,” she asked rhetorically moving towards the replicator. “The only thing I ever wanted from you was your love. Apparently, you only want obedience. I will do it this time but don’t ever threaten me again with losing the material things in my life. You can keep your penthouse and your business and your Empire. I have no doubt you can replace me with some yes girl that will fall in line when you snap your fingers. Thank you for making that crystal clear. I’m quite positive I won’t forget it nor have the need for you to ever repeat it. I will make sure I am gone before you ever had to remind me again of how precarious my station is with you,” Jessica’s tone was icy. “Now let’s try to salvage the first day of the rest of our lives with a few forced smiles as I call my parent’s and to inform them about just how happy we are,” she said moving towards the communication console, “or do I need permission to use the comm’s too. I can place the call in my office if you don’t want me to use your unit. “

From behind her in a corner of the penthouse she could not see there was a small cough as Aedan looked at her, a small smirk on his face. “I am not sure that will be needed my love, we can just talk to them here. They were so excited when I told them I made sure they were here for you. Though they weren’t aware of ALL the details but I am sure we can explain the rest as they get to meet their granddaughter.” Aedan said, and as Jessica turned she would noticed it was far more than just her mom and dad. Behind her was four men and a woman standing, all dressed properly and looking quite concerned as they did.

“Pumpkin, is there a problem here,” Jessica’s dad said getting a slightly confused expression on his face.

“Daddy,” Jessica said instantly feeling the tension of the prior ten minutes melt from her body. “Momma.” She did not wait for replies but crossed the room reaching out to hug her father then a small squeak as Cera was slightly crushed in the hug.

“What…what are you doing here?” Jessica looked at Aedan.

“It was the strangest thing,” her mom said looking like she would never have believed the story if she had not experienced it. “Your father and I were in bed. It was around 11.”

“11:20 to be exact. Ronin O’Ryan was on. He was doing this bit about arm wrestling. It was great until,”

“Until,” Rachel Vaughn cut her husband off with a glance, “we heard a ruckus outside and then a knock at the door. When we came downstairs we found a group of men in black on our lawn. The guy at the door said he needed us to come with them. That you were in labor and it was their job to get us to you immediately. He then gestured to the ship.”

“It was insanely cool. Like that movie San Francisco has fallen where Berard Cutler swoops in as the President’s tour to Starfleet Academy was take hostage by a rogue band of irate Betazoids. I mean when Aedan’s guys,” Jacob stopped his animated version of the story to make eye contact with his new son in law. “We are good with the Aedan thing right,” he made a back and forth motion with his fingers. “I mean I have only known you for about ten minutes so far but I’m good with Aedan or son,” he shrugged his shoulders. “We can work on the details later,” Jacob waved off the talk of names and continued with the story. “So these guys just showed up like that scene where the hustled them in the ship and took off as the President lept in the hatchway,”

Rachel shook her head at her husband, “Mr. Teller your men were perfect gentleman and they LET us board via walking. It was not a military evacuation as Jacob here seems to want to remember it.”

“Babe,” Jacob tapped his chest. “You remember it the way you want but I know how it really went. Soo cool he mouthed to Aedan making the thumbs up sign.

“Anyway,” Rachel shook her head. “Once we got on the ship Aedan informed us that you went into labor earlier than expected and he was going to move heaven an earth to get us here as fast as he could. He found five guest choreographers to work the dance studio and brought in a team of firemen and engineers to help your father’s department and several other firehouses get those updates they needed.”

“Yeah anything of yours catches fire in the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex and you will have every firefighter in the state putting it out with their spit if need,” Jacob tapped his chest with his fist and pointed a finger. “We love you man.”

“He bought each department some new firetruck of sorts,” she waved off her husband’s fan boy show.

“Rachel,” Jacob had a sharp tone in his voice. “It was not some firetruck but Inferno HD -107 model with the the 3-section aerial device, 100’ vertical reach extending platform, 98’ horizontal reach at 0 degrees, Parapet bracket front of platform, 500# rappelling arm, and hyper range ion drive. The thing even had cup holders. Fire truck,” her father scoffed the last word almost in disgust imitating her mother’s voice.

Jessica crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow at him. While her parents might be enamored with her new husband, especially her father who looked as if is he would divorce her mother and marry Aedan on the stop if he asked, Jessica only saw this as classic Aedan. For as unyielding and hard as he could be at times in business, his streak to give Jessica the universe held no bounds. “He does have a way about him,” Jessica said smirking giving her husband a wink.

“The ship he sent was one of the fastest I had ever seen. It got us to the Outpost in 18 hours which if we had flown commercial it would have taken at least 3 days because we were making plans to do it to come see you anyway,” Rachel said.

“Oh man that thing was Fast Jess,” her dad took over using that high squeaking voice he always had when dealing with fast machines. “I mean if I didn’t know better I would have to say it was a military or Italian grade engine yet the handling on that baby was so smooth. The captain let me drive,” her dad said almost proudly.

Jessica held up a hand realizing her parents could go on for hours about the trip here. “We can talk more when we eat breakfast but um…honey…whose your friends,” Jessica pointed to the people behind her parents.

“I am Renaldo Ebel. I am the lead consultant of interiors with Better Ships and Gardens and chief contributing editor to Galactic brides. You, my dear, are going to be featured in the June Bride edition.”

“Oh, yes there is also a wedding planner, cake, dress… mmmmm… what do you do again?” he said looking over at the woman next to her mom. “What was… Heather right?”

The woman looked nervous, with her mousy figure she nodded as she pressed her glasses up. “I am the photographer sir.” she said eyes darting about.

“Yes… yes, sorry Heather my bad. So, love as I was saying I brought them here and I wanted to ensure your parents that while we were officially married, that they would never loose a chance to see their daughter walk down the aisle. We can iron out the other things later, you don’t need to worry pumpkin the rest can surely wait another time.” he said as he walked over, placing his hand firmly on her side as he pulled her in close, his grip[ tight and firm on her arm as he leaned in.

“And you are never really replaceable… nor one I would ever want to try and do so to. I love you, but don’t confuse me for a weak willed man.” he said softly, for her ears only as he leaned in and kissed her deeply before spinning her around as he looked at the people in the room, his eyes focusing as he looked them all. Aedan had those icy blue eyes that seemed to force almost everyone to cower, yet the smile could just as easily melt them all.

Jessica felt her pulse quicken and her words caught in her throat. Life with Aedan was going to be interesting. It was also apparent that while Aedan seemed to have little
interest in religion he lived by a single verse. 1 Timothy 5:8 came to Jessica’s mind immediately. Until now she never really understood the impact of what was being said or how it could relate to real life. Now she did. Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. To Aedan loyalty meant everything and Jessica meant the universe to him. These two things in his mind had to co-exist. She understood that now.
In his mind, she could not love him the way he needed to be loved unless he knew her absolute loyalty was to him and him alone. He would take care of his own family and anyone that crossed that would see the wrath of god bedfall him. He would do things with or without her blessing if he felt it was for the best interest of his family. Marriage was going to take a while to figure out with him but the one thing she never needed to figure out was that she loved him. The rest would figure itself out in the wash.

“Yes well, maybe we should go to the parlor, we can set everyone up in there and get some drinks and decide where to go from here. It’ll be time I think we got to know each other. Then we can let the wedding team go, they have rooms at Lux and they can stay the night but I have your parents in our guest room…” Aedan paused as he thought for a second, seeming to remember which room in his place it really was. “The one across from the billiard room and next to the conservatory.” Aedan said as he smiled at the group, it was charming and soothing. None would know just how tense it had been between Jessica and him earlier, he was good at deflecting and turning situations into moments for his gain.

“Are you sure,” Rachel said following Aedan into a room with plush white furniture. Taking a seat she let her body relax into the cushions. “I saw walking in there was a Liberty Lodge in that little shopping mall area,”

“The Promenade,” Jessica offered.

“Promenade,” her mother repeated. “I mean I don’t want to intrude.”

“Rach…Rach,” Jessica’s father yelled as he finally met up with the group in the room. Jessica hadn’t realized her father had lagged back that far when they came into the parlor. “He has the GLB,” her father said almost reverently. Looking at Aedan, Jacob explained. “I was passing by the console in the kitchen and wanted to Bang it to see how the Rangers were doing in the playoffs. They have this new shortstop. The kid is a wonder. He graduated Corpus Christi High and went from the minors to majors after five games. Do…you…mind if I check the scores,” Jacob said grabbing the remote and leaning back in the chair as comfortable as if it were his own easy chair back home.

“Yes we are talking about your daughter’s wedding,” Rachel said pulling the remote from Jacob’s hand and nudging him in the ribs while giving him the look married wives gave their husbands to indicate they were not doing what was expected.

“Oh…oh right,” Jacob said looking at Aedan. “Rachel and I want you to know we spent a bit of time going over things with the wedding planners on the way here. We told them that they had a budget of about $25,000 credits and Heather said she could work to make things happen with that.” Still holding his gaze for half a second, Jacob broke it off and quickly snapped his attention to the console as he plucked the remote from his wives hand.

Jessica rubbed her forehead and avoided looking at Aedan. It had nothing to do with the money. She had no doubts Aedan was going to make sure the event was exactly what she wanted. He always did that. What she was waiting was the reason she seemed a tad distracted as she sat next to Aedan.

“I know this fiddle player,” Jacob said causing Jessica to slightly dig her nails into Aedan’s thigh.

There is was. The ‘I know a fiddle player’ comment she had dreaded was going to be spoken of. Billy Bryan Bortson was something of a local legend in Dallas. The man was an excellent fiddler who her father had become tight friends with over the years. As talented as the man was, Jessica was not interested in old Billy strumming out a wedding march.

“Daddy I am not having Billy play,” Jessica started but was immediately cut off y her father.

“What do you have against fiddlers?” Jacob spread his hand out almost as if he was hurt.

“Nothing,” Jessica said feeling that weird sensation start to vibrate in her spine that she always got when she dug her heels into a stance.

“They why don’t you want Bortson to play the wedding?”

“Because he also does the hog calls and hoedown every year at the Firestations Summer Carnival charity event,” Jessica said feeling the first of many issues begin the creep into the wedding planning. “I am not going to have him play my wedding.”

“Well it is not your wedding only either,” Jacob said. “It is also Aedan’s. He should have a say.” Jacob paused and looked at Aedan with the Intergalactic sign for be my wingman etched on his face. He also threw the nice young man across from his squarely in the path of a garbage scowl. Jacob has spent his entire life surrounded by women. It was evident that Mr. Vaughn not only saw Aedan as a good and decent man to marry his daughter but also as someone who might help him sway the minds or simply cast a vote on his side against his wife and daughter. “Aedan…do you wish to have a fiddler at the wedding,” Jacob presented the question as if he and Aedan were old friends yet his eyes held an almost pleading expression for the young man to help him in his crusade

“A what? What the devil is a fiddler?” he said looking at them all like they had extra heads. He had never heard of such nonsense in his life. “Please tell me there isn’t more nonsense like that? I know you guys are from Texas but we don’t have to slaughter a longhorn or attack Mexicans for the wedding to do we?” Aedan said, it was clear he was being a bit snarky but he couldn’t help but give a small laugh and smile as he said the words. Even when Aedan was a bit of a dick he always came off as charming in his own way.

“If anything I thought the DJ at my nightclub Lux would be the one doing all these, she has great assets, she can even do the event with clothes on.” Aedan said, adding a new idea to the suggestion pool.
