Akane sat at her desk and sighed as she looked at the pile of boxes in the corner. Moving had never been her favourite thing and she loathed unpacking. On her last posting it had taken her 4 months to unpack all her stuff but she had decided that this was a new posting and a new leaf. Reluctantly she grabbed one of the boxes and dragged it across the floor towards her. She gently took out one of her most prized possessions, a family picture. She gently touched the image of her sister’s face and said a silent prayer that she would return. It had been 13 years since her sister ran away from home, Akane had only been 15 but that day still haunted her. No one from the family had seen or heard from her since but deep down Akane knew she was still out there somewhere and that one day they would be reunited. She popped the picture of them in pride of place on her desk.

Shuffling a few bits around she looked at the next box and sighed then shook her head and tapped her comm badge.

=^= Lt Sakai to all crew, please contact me at your earliest convenience to arrange a routine psychological examination…=^= she paused for a moment, knowing that for most officers this was not exactly their favourite thing to do so perhaps she needed to sweeten the deal a bit. =^=…the first 5 crew members to book a session get cake…=^= she added with a smile, that would certainly have worked on her so she was hoping it had the same effect on the outpost crew.

As she waited for the replies to flood in, Akane took a moment to start looking over personnel files. She briefly glanced back at the unopened boxes and grabbed a throw off her sofa and chucked it over the remaining luggage. “Out of sight, out of mind…” she chuckled to herself as she grabbed a cup of coffee from the replicator and went back to reading.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur was working when the message rung in Ops. He looked around the room at the slow buzz. He opened up a new tab on his console and started typing a message, not wanting to move away from his duty station to answer verbally. ‘I am ready whenever, I’m attaching my work schedule. I have room both after my current shift and before my afternoon shift tomorrow.’ He typed ‘Regards. Lieutenant Commander Bragason’ He signed off and sent the message.

SOO - Bragason

Akane noticed the message pop up on her console and promptly tapped out a reply.

To: Lieutenant Commander Bragason

Thank you for your prompt reply Lt Commander, why don’t you pop in after you finish your shift and we can have a chat. I look forward to meeting you.

Regards

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur answered with an affirmative before logging of his Messenger and returning to work. A few hours later after finishing his shift, he made his way directly to the counselor’s office. He took a moment to straighten his uniform and check his massive beard for any marks of uncleanliness. After a moment of checking himself, he hit the chime and placed his hands behind his back.

SOO - Bragason

Akane looked up from her desk and put her best smile on. “Come in!” she called out as she stood to meet Bragason. “Lt Commander, thank you for joining me, please do have a seat,” she said as she gestured to the empty chair. “What can I get you drink to go with your cake?” she asked with a grin, as she placed a box of delicately decorated cakes on the desk in front of them. Although Akane had found this a good way to entice people to have their evaluations, the main reason she did it was so that she had an excuse to eat cake herself.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur raised an eyebrow in slight surprise as if the thought of cake hadn’t entered his mind yet “Uhm, just milk thank you” He smiled politely as he sat down, observing her room with great care.

SOO - Baldur

Akane smiled and nodded. “Of course,” she replied as she walked across to the replicator and ordered a milk and a peppermint tea for herself. She placed the glass in front of him and took her own seat. “So Lt Commander, how long have you been serving on the outpost?” she asked, taking a sip of her tea.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur raised an eyebrow questioningly “Just a few days, I arrived during the latest Romulan trouble, transferred from Starbase 234” He grabbed the glass of milk and took a small sip.

SOO - Baldur

Akane nodded as she made a quick note on her padd. “So what made you choose this assignment?” she asked as she opened the box of cakes and slid them across the desk. “Please do help yourself,” she added as she took another sip of peppermint tea.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur reached over and took a slice and placed it on a plate “Well it was time, I had a successor in place at 234 that I felt was ready for her own department and there was an opening here.” He took a bite from the cake but didn’t place it in his mouth yet “I’ve had some relations with the Romulans in the past, mostly contacts I made during the Dominion War that I’ve stayed in touch with. Plus the station has a dedicated Strategic Operations team that had no leader so to speak.”

SOO - Baldur

Akane smiled warmly and nodded. “That’s quite a sacrifice to give up your position for someone else to step in to, a noble one though, I’m sure they appreciated the break, was it a difficult decision?” She asked as she sipped her tea again.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur chuckled “No not really, 234 was a great location but getting the opportunity to work here was worth the shift. There are several key locations that every officer within my department would want to serve on. Starbase 234 was one of them for it’s proximity to Klingon space or 375 during and after the Dominion war and of course Deep Space 9. I’ve always enjoyed assignments near Romulan space, depsite the coldness of their culture I find them an interesting people.”

SOO - Baldur

Sakai nodded as she selected a slice of cake herself and began picking some of the icing off. “So, have you found it much different here? I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting 234 personally but I imagine it’s quite busy?” she asked. “Have you been here long?” she asked, trying not to spray cake across the desk.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur raised an eyebrow as he finished a bite of his cake “Like I said, just a few days. I haven’t really had time to acclimate yet but so far it’s rather different. 234 is a big installation, flag officers and ship Captains running around. Things seem much calmer here although the assignments are more or less the same.” Baldur explaine before taking another bite of his cake.

SOO - Baldur

Akane nodded as she took another bite of her cake as well and washed it down with another swig of tea. “So tell me Lt Commander, what aspirations do you have for the future? Would you like to go into command at all? Or do you have other plans?”

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur finished chewing before answering “No not really, but then again I hadn’t planned on exchanging my gold Tactical uniform for the red Strategic Operations. Well to be more precise I was demoted a few years back to lieutenant, after that I took an Operations posting on the Saracen. A couple of years later I was offered a promotion back to Lieutenant Commander and a posting as Strategic Operations Officer on Starbase 234. It was a great opportunity so I decided to take it. Before that point, I always thought I’d end up teaching Tactics at the Academy before retiring, maybe as a full Commander but now after working fleet coordinator and liaison work…” He paused for a drink of milk “Well it turns out I’m good at it so maybe I do have a future in Command.”

SOO - Baldur

Akane nodded and made a couple of notes. “It certainly doesn’t hurt to keep your options open,” she added with a smile. “What about your personal life, any aspirations there?” She asked gently. For some it could be a difficult subject for one reason or another but it was also a good insight for her as a counsellor. “If you don’t mind sharing with me that is?” She added with a warm smile.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur inhaled then exhaled heavily as he considered his answer “I honestly hadn’t really considered anything outside my career. I have my family back on Earth, parents and three siblings, my younger sister is a civie scientist on Starbase 111. My closest friends outside my immediate workplace are my four cousins all in Starfleet. I’ve never really thought much about settling down anywhere or with anyone. I guess the closest thing I have to personal non career aspirations are weight lifting contests and maintaining my beard”

SOO - Baldur

Akane wasn’t sure whether he was joking or not so thought it best not to chuckle. “So, is there anything in particular that you want to discuss?” she asked as she took a quick scan through his notes to see if there was anything pertinent there that they needed to cover.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur shrugged “Not that I can think of, I try to be as open as possible when talking to counselors and psychologists as I’ve found it extremely helpful in the past. New counselors often want to talk about my wartime experiences or the toll of the Tactical officer but that was then, I haven’t manned a tactical station in fullness for a few years now.” He took a slow gulp of his milk, crying the milk of his whisker with his large hands “I’ve had a fairly relaxed career of late after ‘91”

SOO - Baldur

Akane nodded as she made a few notes. “Do you miss that part of your life at all now, not the war of course, but I imagine it was quite a different pace to what you do now?” she asked curiously.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur took another moment to think “Well it is very different to how things used to be, it’s not as stressful for sure. I suppose I do miss it, at least parts of it. I don’t miss the taking of lives but there was satisfaction that I don’t think can be recreated elsewhere, the skill of employing tools to outmanouver your opponent, a short chess match with lives in the balance.”

SOO - Baldur

Akane nodded and listened intently, “Are you able to use any of the skills you acquired in your new role?” she asked curiously. “I would imagine there is a degree of problem solving and tactical thinking which could be employed in many different areas of work?” she added, wondering if he had thought about it at all.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

“It’s mainly similar work only more big picture. Working instead with multiple ships over the sector instead of only one ships main systems. It makes for some good busy-work. It’s the doubling as a stations intelligence officer that’s the dull part, but all in all it’s good load, hard work that pays off” Baldur explained.

SOO - Baldur

The counselor took a sip of her drink and nodded again, “I guess we all have part of our job that we enjoy less,” she smiled. “So what about your spare time, what do you do to unwind?” she asked curiously.
