Akane let out an audible yawn as the doors closed on her final patient for the day. Rubbing her tired eyes she went over to the replicator and ordered a hot cup of Jasmine tea. She took a seat on the sofa and thought back to her earlier conversation with Evie. She hadn’t had the best start to her assignment here and she knew she needed to swallow her pride and fix it. Taking another sip of tea she tapped her comm badge.

=^= Lt Sakai to Captain McGarrett, I was wondering if I could meet with you sir, off the record that is… =^= she asked hopefully.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

=^= Alright. I’m free at the moment. Shall I stop by your office? =^= Off the record…he pondered what this could be about. It wasn’t worth being too concerned over as he’d find out soon enough.

=^= Of course Captain, that would be great, unless you want me to come to you? =^= she offered. A momentary panic set in that she hadn’t really had time to think about what to say to him but she pushed it to the back of her mind and took a sip of tea.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

=^= I’ll take that as a yes. I’ll be there shortly. McGarrett out. =^=

Three minutes later the chime to her office rang and the rather tall and surprisingly young captain stood outside the door.

Akane had quickly tidied her office and straightened her hair and uniform. As the door chime rang she jumped a little, surprised he had got there so fast knowing how slow the lifts moved. “Come in,” She announced as she stood and walked in front of her desk to greet the Captain.

As the doors slid open, Akane was surprised at the youthful man in front of her. Although she had read all the bios on the crew, in person he seemed even younger. She smiled warmly and gestures to a seat. “Thank you for coming Captain, please do take a seat, can I get you something to drink sir?” She asked, wandering across to the replicator.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

“No thanks, trying to quit,” said Mathias oddly as he returned her smile.

Mathias made his way to the chair and sat in it. “So what’s on your mind, Lieutenant? Or would you rather start with some meaningless small talk to get warmed up?” He wasn’t really sure if anyone else was amused by his quirkiness. But he sure enjoyed it.

Sakai laughed a little nervously and smiled as he took a seat. She cleared her throat awkwardly as she took her own seat. “Captain, firstly I wanted to apologise for my somewhat blunt and thoughtless message out to your crew when I first arrived. It was never my intention to make officers feel uncomfortable but I know I didn’t do it in the right way. I guess I am worried that perhaps I didn’t make a very good first impression on you sir..?” she said sheepishly, wondering whether he would confirm her fear. She bit her lip anxiously whilst she waited for a reply.

The captain folded his hands together and waited a moment before replying. “Apology accepted, Lieutenant. For whatever reason we’ve gone through a few counselors here since I became the captain. They all tend to give me a similar first impression. Though I know all of them were trying to do their job.” Mathias decided to leave it at that for the moment and see how she took it. What he said probably wasn’t going to be enough to calm her down, though he thought it best to make sure he had listened well enough before launching into a speech.

Akane smiled warmly and nodded. “I understand sir, us counselors do tend to come on a bit strong. Perhaps because we are suddenly responsible for the mental wellbeing of a new group of people we know very little about, there’s only so much you can get from looking at previous records, most of what we do is gauge reactions and responses which can be hard to articulate into a brief report?” she offered as she mused on it. “I prefer prevention as opposed to a cure, I would much rather deal with a potential problem up front than have to come and retrieve an officer who has had a breakdown on duty because of an unresolved issue,” she realised she was headed for a little rant so put her hands up in surrender and smiled. “But I do understand that you need as little disruption to the routine and running of the outpost, I will endeavor to be a little more subtle in future,” she added.

He nodded in return. “Good. I understand it’s a challenging job to walk into when you don’t yet have a good understanding of who these people are.”

Folding her hands in her lap, Akane leant back in her chair as she studied the Captain. “At the end of the day Captain, I’m here to assist and advise you, to make sure that your officers are as equipped and mentally capable to perform their duties as they can be, the last thing I want to do is cause trouble. You know your officers better than I do and I will gladly take your lead, the most important thing is that we work together,” she offered as a bit of an olive branch.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Mathias smiled and shifted in his chair. He was pleased it seemed her worry was quickly subsiding. “Agreed. For now I know them better, but quickly that will start to change and you’ll see a different side of them than I do. I’m not trying to cause you trouble either, Lieutenant. That wouldn’t be in my best interest as I know I’ll come to the point where I need your help.”

Akane nodded and smiled back. “Maybe we can just put our first encounter behind us then sir?” she asked hopefully. She was always keen to make a good impression and so far she wasn’t really doing very well.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Mathias returned her nod. “I think we already have, Lieutenant. So, is there anything else on your mind you would like to discuss?”
