They had come to rest in the same pose as earlier, with Lily resting her left leg over his lap. In the quiet of the room he could hear only her breathing and felt the beat of her heart against his chest. Something about her felt right to him, she was different to him that was certain. Lily Locksley, Duncan thought as he looked at her, was the Yin to his Yang. By themselves, Lily and Duncan seemed complete opposites. What he had discovered from his time with her though, was that she could connect with him and compliment his every move and thought in a way that he had never experienced, a cold fusion of elements that had resulted in a bang, several, really, that now led them to this moment. “I don’t think I have ever wanted to lie awake and just look at someone like I do with you,” he whispered to her softly, brushing a large strand of damp hair from her face. “To just look into your eyes and lose myself in them. You have amazing eyes.”

Duncan moved her leg from his lap and shifted off of the couch, pushing himself over her and coming to his feet. His tattoo’s visible on his body as he stood, something that before his shirt was removed, he had never mentioned to Lily. It was part of her surprise, the secrets he had promised she would learn if he didn’t answer her question to tell her one. On his back, the large dark tattoo of a Phoenix rising from the flames while his left arm was covered in a sleeve, shoulder to below his elbow of billowing smoke from which Earth animals appeared within. A keen eye would make out that each animal was drawn differently, leading to the thought that different artists had drawn them.

Duncan didn’t look for his trousers, he knew exactly where they were and in a moment he had them in his hands while he stood and turned to the window beside the couch looking over Gamma Tiltium. “Lily, would you come here a moment?” He asked her gently. In the quiet he had no need to speak louder than was necessary, but he held out his hand to her, to draw her to him if she came to him.

“Of course,” she rose from the couch but did not bother with dressing. Instead, she wrapped the soft blanket around her that was lying crumpled up in a corner of the counch. The blanket covered far more than her actual clothes. Fitting her like a cape from the past, the dark purple, plush robe covered her neck all the way to the floor so the only thing showing was her eyes and bare feet. In the stillness of the room, her steps sounded almost loud as she moved towards him. Maybe because she was almost hopping on the balls of her feet instead of walking. Her gait could be best described as moving across a hot floor instead of dark oak hardwood.

“Okay the first improvement, when I move in, is carpet everywhere or heated floors,” Lily said moving in front of Duncan to look out the large window at the planet below. “The second is pay your electric bill,” she leaned back against his chest pulling the blanket tighter around her as if they were in a frozen tundra. “I am pretty sure it was far warmer in here an hour ago than it is now,” she wiggled against his body until she found the perfect spot. “Or is this how you get the girls to leave after falling under the spell of your charm?”

Duncan wrapped his arms around her and looked out the large, floor to ceiling windows that spread out to each side of them at the Planet below. “You want to carpet hardwood? That’s not going to happen, this club is going to have the rule, no bare feet. Hows that? Fixes the problem on so many levels.” He wouldn’t admit to the temperature indeed being cooler against his skin than it had been when they entered, instead, he just held her tighter. “I’ve only had one sure fire way of getting rid of the girls the next morning,” he said, quietly as if it was a big secret. “Site to site transport. They appreciate a coffee at Evies on my account. As long as they are dressed before I press the big red emergency button.”

Taking a deep breath she let Rhodes hold her close and enjoyed the quiet moment between them. So many questions replaced each answer Lily thought she knew about the charming science chief. For now, she would start with the most obvious one. “So tell me about your phoenix. If I am correct it is from Greek mythology,” her voice held a questioning tone.

“Mostly, yes,” he agreed. “Although it has many similar variations in many of the ancient cultures. Egyptian, Persian, Chinese to name a few. But the best known is the Greek.”

“It also represents a bird that is reborn obtaining a new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. Since you don’t seem to be hurting in the credit department, I am assuming the rise from the ashes is something more symbolic. Please don’t tell me you hate your family or that you are the black sheep? I am a sucker for happy endings.” Lily had never thought to ask about his family until this moment. The animals on his arm could mean anything but what she did seem to notice was that they were not drawn as a single image.

Lily Locksley

“No, I am most definitely not the Black sheep of the family. That would be closer to my uncle Felix.” Duncan turned her around to face him again, still wrapped in her blanket. “I don’t hate my family, quite the opposite. I love them probably more than they deserve, and that sounded way more mysterious and darker than I meant it to be.” He laughed gently, grinned and bit his lip softly as he looked at her.

“My family is from Earth, England to be precise although you know that from my accent. It’s a large family, lots of relatives. Both my Parents live on the family estate, and I have two sisters. One of them is in Starfleet, the other, well she runs the family business in a day to day capacity. She’s supposed to be coming out to the Outpost to see me sometime soon, maybe we can avoid her together.” His grin that reappeared revealed the humor behind the statement, as well as a hint that he wanted to see her again.

“I’m glad you like happy endings Lily, because I can think of nothing happier to end our night than to spend the rest of it with you.” His fingers found her chin, and his warm palm cupped her jaw so he could tilt her head upwards towards him. He didn’t say another word, he just let his lips find hers and let the two of them sink into the quiet once again.
