Nikki took the stairs. The infirmary, being off the promenade, was not far and he wanted to avoid the lift. Partly he didn’t like lifts and partly that he wanted to nose around as much as he could on this station to get to know it. It wasn’t as ‘old’ as he thought and thought he saw from the outside but it had this strange ‘something borrowed, something blue’ feel to it, like a dancer that just wasn’t in synch with the rest of the team. He’d woken up with his shoulder aching and figured that was time enough to get his physical over with. Was there a good massage joint on the promenade?

Entering the infirmary his nose crinkled. No matter how good (or bad) the air filters were hospitals still smelled like hospitals. He didn’t like them. Another thing he didn’t like but that was for a different reason than lifts. His gran had died in one. There were many sensory smells that gave Nikki a boost - the smell of a rainforest, or a good cigar, or a woman - but this was never a good one. Moving to the reception, Nikki said to the kid behind the counter. “Brako. Not scheduled but wonderin if I could get me physical in now.” He had left his cigar behind again. Now he found he missed it.

OOC: Bump x2 .. Gene

OCC: Hey you. I am going to check you in but mouse will take over. I have made such a fuss about how happy I am you are here but have completely ignored you. I am about to fix that :) ~Kate

IC:

“Cassandra Carr. On schedule and wondering if you want to the 2 hour physical or the in and out special in under 10 minutes,” a perky red-head said lifting her face up to look in his eyes hearing his request. Parker was new to the station and still getting to know the crew. Lucky for her the man in sickbay was brand spanking new to the station like her.

“I am the jack of all trades but medical master of none,” she extended her hand up as if reaching for help instead of extending a greeting. The man before her was huge but that was how most of the Federation boys were. At 5‘4” however most men towered above her. It also didn’t help she was sitting at a desk causing her to tilt her head back some to make eye contact.

Nikki had ranged through a blonde, brunette and a redhead in his time. As he looked at this ‘mistress of none’ he wondered if it wasn’t time to start over again. She reminded him a little of Brigitte, his first wife, though she seemed more vacuous than Brige was. “Nikki,” he said again taking her hand that was cool and a little limp. “How ya doin red,” he continued. She seemed a typical secretary type - chatty and distracted, but might look good in a tight dress. He was fond of her hair; of course it being the same as his own. Some reds were freckled. Nikki was not though he did have a red carpet over him.

Tapping his name into the console in front of her, Cassie brought up his record. It was going to take more than a passing glance with this guy to get his handle on his medical history but she was looking for one key thing: Funny or flight status. While not a doctor, Cassie had learned there were to versions of people that entered sickbay willingly. There were the happy go lucky or the ones who would rather face imminent death by decompression. She wasn’t sure based on his charts but the brusque greeting made her lean towards the idea that if she asked how he was doing today the response might be something like ‘lady if I had a choice between being assimilated by the Borg and coming out with ten bionic attachments or sitting down on one of your beds I would pick the Borg every time.’

He leaned into the desk. “Well that depends, darlin, does a 2 hour include a massage in the bargain? Not much wrong with ol Nikki but now and again his shoulder gets a bit tricky and needs some care.” That was an open question that could be taken more than one way. If she had glanced at his file she’d be in the know. If not he might get a slap - not the first he’d had.

Standing up she grabbed two things: a medical check in PaDD and her trusted lollipop canister. Years ago she worked under a doctor who gave her the best medical advice ever. Carry lollipops because they could be used to break the ice or stop someone from complaining the entire session. Motioning for Brako to follow her Cassie walked towards a medical bed.

Following her he admired the view in the sadly short trip it took to get toward a medical bed. She was distracting him just enough from the ‘doctor’ smell of the area but he glanced over at a vent when he heard a rattle coming from there. Something was not happy inside there; it could either be a vole caught in a trap or the filters were out of alignment. When she stopped he was forced to look back at her to find that she was thrusting a jar in his direction filled with … suckers? He’d not seen those for years.

“So what’s your poison? Cherry, strawberry, grape or lime,” she asked holding the jar out to the side of her body.

Cassie Carr medical receptionist extraordiniare.

“Whiskey,” he said automatically with a smile, “But if I’m limited, I’m favorin the cherry. What about you?” Plucking one out he realized she had solved his earlier dilemma. Unwrapping it he bit into it, the candy breaking up with some resistance. Chewing the candy and taking in the burst of flavor associated with it he twirled around the white stick remaining. “So what’s a dame like you doin in a place like this?” Once he swallowed the white stick became his surrogate toothpick/cigar.
Nikki, COO

“Making sure you stay in tip top shape so that Dr. Paige doesn’t have to spend all day with you,” she said with a wink handing the PaDD backward to the approaching CMO.

Nikki noticed the approaching doctor and commented behind his improvised toothpick. “There are worse fates, lass.” The doc was easy on the eyes but had a look about her.

Piage came over “How are things going?” SHe asked Cassie.

“He’s all checked in with info and he is a handful,” she smiled. “A handful and a charmer.” Cassie stuck out her hand. “Mr. Brako please be a stranger,” she asked in a happy tone. “Because this is sickbay and we don’t want you hear you are injured or sick.” She added the end to make sure Nikko knew her comment wasn’t personal. After releasing his hand, Cassie moved back to her seat.

Cassie, the receptionist

He caught the tone and that she was not being serious. Still it wasn’t something one normally said. He liked it. Unconventional. Outside the medical bag as it were. He grinned and leaned back some, palms flat behind him on the bio bed’s thin cushion and watched Cassie’s stride. With a small effort he turned his attention to the doctor approaching. “Strangers can be more excitin lass,” he said quietly, with a smile.

As Nikki worked the stub of the sucker into an appropriate place between his teeth he looked at the new dame who came by. She had the pips to suggest she was another boss dame and, if he remembered right from the scan of the command crew she was the boss doc. Were there any fellas who actually worked on this tub? Seemed like a boat of dames. Sure, a lot were lookers, but still. His legs swinging like he was sitting on a dock, the Iotian observed the two women. One, the Ginger Cassie, looked the part who hadn’t quite drank the cool-aid and become a cookie cutter Fleet standee. The boss-doc, however, did look the part. And by the look of the rock on her finger, was rather invested in matrimony. He wondered if the fella was on board or not. Unlike the XO boss dame who was married to a shyster that he was aware of, though had never met personally. They were alike, the two of them.

Paige looked at Nikki “Welcome aboard the Outpost.” She said “I’m Doctor Stone. You must be our new chief of Operations, Mr. Brakko.” She said glancing at the padd that Cassie had handed to her “Is there anything in your file that I need to know about that isn’t documented?” She asked getting to the point and not wanting to keep the COO from his new duties.

CMO

Stone, eh? Her bedside presence seemed to fit her name, he thought. The way she glanced at the PaDD he wondered if she was looking for the next line in her script; to Nikki’s ears she was running through her rote text. Well, it was no never mind to him. If most of his engineers were dames this was going to be a problem. He’d find out soon enough. “Nothin new, doc. Me shoulder’s been actin up. I blame the transport ride to this … here. It wasn’t the smoothest trip ol Nikki’s taken.” He glanced in the direction of Cassie’s desk which was out of sight from where he sat. “I was wonderin if there be massage services here or if that is farmed out to the promenade.” She seemed to want to get rid of him. That was fine. He didn’t favor these places much himself.
- Nikki

Paige smiled, it was warm, much warmer than was her norm “We do have a massage therapist here in sickbay.” She said “Did you hit your shoulder while on the trip here?” She asked taking the tricorder and running it over the shoulder to see what if any damage had occurred “What do you think of the Outpost so far? Or have you had a chance to explore much?” She asked as she waited for teh tricorder readings to return.

Nikki’s face showed his pleasant surprise at the availability of a massage therapist. Sure some in the ‘private’ sector would be of a more friendly bent, but it was all a tradeoff. If he wanted a good massage he could go holo. “I may be a pretty steady customer, lass,” he replied. By the way of her smile Nikki wondered whether she was the one doing the massage. Could certainly be worse, he thought. “Nae lass. Have had this fer years. Happened after some of me more focused boxing months. Docs think it is just something I have - the muscles knot up easy and gets te be more annoying than painful.” He rolled his right arm and shoulder with his left hand moving to the approximate area of the pain. “Sometimes sittin too long can do it too.” He paused for her scan. It distinctly showed the muscles tightened in that area.

“I’ve not seen much but what I have seen is that this place looks more like Humpty after his divin accident. Somebody wants te keep ol Nikki busy.” He wasn’t going to let the station get off easy in his first glimpses of it. “I’ve yet te meet me boys and get a good rundown on the place.” So was all these checks a way of procrastination? Or just dotting his i’s and crossing his t’s? Or a bit of both.
- Nikki, COO

Paige smiled “We try to keep things hopping for you.” She said “We have a few things to fix around here, I’ll work on getting a list to you in a day or two.” She added as she finished up her scans “Everything looks good. You’re cleared for duty. I’ll have the massage therapist get in touch with you to schedule an appointment.
