Sakai smiled warmly and nodded. “It sounds like you keep yourself busy then? So you’re a bit of a linguist then I take it?” she asked curiously as she swiveled in her chair to look at her bookcase. She carefully plucked out an old paperback book and handed it Baldur, the title read ‘Kokoro’. She smiled as she slid it across the desk. “This is one from my heritage, passed down from my father, it’s in Japanese though?” she offered.

Baldur held the book with great care as one would a child. He examined it with curiosity and squinted slightly as he read the authors name “My Japanese is rusty but that name is familiar, I believe I’ve read something by him before, a long time ago” He said as he kept reading the name over and over “I had a Japanese roommate in the Academy, His uncle owned a bookstore in San Fransisco that dealt mainly in 18th to 20th century literature. I’ve never enjoyed playing holonovels so most of my free time was spent reading books. I will admit that learning the Asian Characters was a challenge at first but it did assist with my career” He opened the first page, his mouth moving as he read the words “You’re from Kyoto originally?” He asked without looking up.

Akane raised an eyebrow, impressed that he had obviously looked up on her. “Indeed I am, someone has been doing their homework!” she added with a chuckle. “It’s a beautiful city, have you ever been?” she asked curiously as she watched him with great fascination as he studied the book. She was thrilled that there was someone else around that knew a little of her culture, it was a rare treat for her.

After gently flipping through a few pages he closed it and placed it on the table, far from the foodstuffs. “Yes I have, the summers before I joined the Acadmy I visited every Captial on Earth, that is old Nation Capitals as of 2100. One Hundred cities a year. I spent more times in some cities over other.” He said with a half smile “I’ve always wanted to visit back, It’s one of the more foreign places to me on Earth. Similar to my home country as an Island but different in all other cases, large mountains and as warm as a Martian Summer. Old culture and interesting folklore.”

Nay chuckled fondly allowing herself a moment of nostalgia as she thought of home. “It certainly is, I’m glad you liked it,” she added as he flipped through the book. Scanning his file again she leant back in her chair and placed her hands gently in her lap. “I see that you’ve had some counselling before in the past Lt Cmdr, did you find it helpful?” she asked gently.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

“Yes I did, I believe that it is important to talk out loud about things that can influence you in any way” Baldur answered without much thought “I’ve always disliked the act of taking a life but unfortunately my talents led me to become a Tactical officer. My first taste of battle was during the Borg attack on Earth, in the first few minutes my chief was injured and I took the Tactical Console. I remember making peace with the fact that we were all going to die after Admiral Haye’s Flagship was destroyed. Hell, it wasn’t until the Enterprise arrived that we finally managed to get a proper strategy together. You have to respect a man that can take command with such ease” He said referencing the Legendary Starship Captain. “I realised that I needed help coping with my own mortality” He stated frankly.

“However, after the Dominion Conflict, I sought counselling for a different reason. The ending of life.” He spoke solemnly “You can rationalise killing Borg, drones that lack individuality. But I never felt that way fighting the Jem’Hadar, they fought like individuals, sure very structured individuals with no personalities but still. I became really good at destroying their and Cardassian Ships.” He looked at the floor for a moment “Then we libarated Betazed and all those doubts and guilty feelings went away” He said grimly.

Akane nodded as she made a few notes then looked into Baldur’s eyes. “I imagine that troubles you?” she asked gently, knowing that this would likely be a raw subject for him. She had seen from experience that once you stop seeing your enemy as individuals it could make them terrifyingly easy to dispatch. Akane had seen many military men brought to their knees by actions in war that they once thought themselves incapable of.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

Baldur chuckled softly “It used to bother me a lot, nowadays it bothers me less, the aforementioned counselling helped. But that was a time where my faith in Justice was overpowered by a desire for revenge. I try to lean on those experiences to avoid such feelings again.” Baldur leaned back deeper into his seat “But it helps that I haven’t been close to any of the old war spots for the past two decades. In any case, I sought out help because that’s what I needed and it worked. It helps you get past certain things. I guess you could say that many members of my generation who’s the first taste of Starfleet were these big conflicts experienced a different galaxy than many others. Like the Cardassian war generation but rougher” He thought outloud “But it’s in the past and that’s were I try to leave it” He said returning to his smile.

Akane smiled and nodded warmly, satisfied that Baldur had adjusted well. “That’s a very good attitude to take Lt Cmdr, and it sounds like you have been able to work through it well,” she confirmed as she made a quick note on her PaDD, “and if you ever do want to talk through it further, my door is always open,” she added with a friendly grin. As she polished off the rest of her tea, she set the empty mug down on the desk. “So, tell me more about your family, it sounds like you’re close?” she ventured, knowing that for some family could be an awkward conversation.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

OOC: Sorry, not sure what happened with the topic line there!

“Actually yes, very close. I have four siblings, a younger Brother and Sister and then there’s the twins, a boy and a girl. I’m the oldest, then there’s Þór… Uhm Thor who lives back home in Iceland playing football, He’s married, kids all of it. Freyja’s next, she lives on Starbase 111 doing civilian research on wormholes or something clever like that. The twins are students back home, live above the restaurant with our parents.”

“Which brings me to our Parents, I was raised in the Capitol, my father owns a building, the first two floors is his restaurant, the third and fourth was our house. My mother was a lawyer in Paris and Strongest woman on earth in 2355, well the Human competition anyway” He chuckled a little “I try to go there every chance, see a game with Þór and eat Dad’s food, argue with mom about anything” He was lost for a moment reminiscing.

“However, I would say that I was always closest with my cousins; Peter, Adam, and Magnus. The eldest Children of my father’s Brothers, we all grew up together and all joined Starfleet as soon as we could. Peter was the eldest and the de facto leader of the group, he and Adam were very close whereas me and Magnus were completely inseparable as boys and in the Academy. We try to meet once or twice a year, difficult when we’re all stationed at different parts of the quadrant.”
