“Don’t forget–you and Danté need to get your physicals done. Bring his Bo, he isn’t as fussy when he has him.” Dierdre spoke rushedly, flattening the hem of her uniform. “Oh! Before I go,” she turned back to her brother, “please shower. You smell like rotten gagh.”

“Loving the affection, Dree.” Dev snorted, adjusting Danté about his hip. “Now would you get going? You’re barging in on my nephew-uncle bonding time.”

“Fine. But I better come back to clean quarters. We are NOT having a repeat of our first day on Jaeger.” Dierdre wrinkled her nose at the thought. “Wish me luck!”

Navarro waved to her family as she slipped through the doors of their new residence, mentally preparing herself for the mess she would return to. Shaking her head, she dismissed the thought to the back of her mind, focusing on her new assignment. Making her way to the turbolift, she rolled over her wrist to check the time. 1100hrs, not bad. She just hoped to catch the Captain before he left for lunch.

Minutes passed like seconds for Dierdre, her mind crowded with a myriad of thoughts popping from its depths like frogs piling into an Oregon lake. Despite what most would assume to be a frazzled antic, Navarro appeared calm and collected. Pressure and stress was nothing new to the young mother, whose son’s tantrums terrified her more than any assailant possibly could.

Stepping from the lift, Dierdre found her way to the left side of the Ops deck, where she’d been informed the CO’s office was. Ah, there it is. She thought as she came across the room. Planting her feet, Dierdre pressed a finger to the chime. All she could do now was wait.

The door opened immediately, revealing a room that was surprisingly empty. There was a long skinny table on the left side and a plant in the corner, but other than that nothing. Then straight ahead a second door opened, revealing a sharp-looking man in his early thirties who was naturally donning command red. As Dierdre entered the inner office she would be able to notice that it was L-shaped, which a nicely furnished seating area off to the right.

Mathias set the PADD down he was reading, flipping it upside-down, and rose to his feet. Standing his well-above-average height quickly became obvious. “Welcome Lieutenant, and come on in,” he greeted warmly.

“Thank you, Captain.” Dierdre wore regard in her smile. Subconsciously, her attention was drawn to the office’s decor. Majority of her prior assignments were starships, leaving her reasonably baffled by its size and, in comparison to the closets most COs had, granduer.

“I may speak redundantly, but I’m Lieutenant Deirdre Navarro,” she stood, dwarfed before him and extended a hand, “your new security chief.”

His hand firmly and confidently shook hers. “Mathias McGarrett. Can I get you something to drink? Why don’t we have a seat in the more comfortable area?” he said, motioning with his hand towards the light gray couch, two matching chairs, and coffee table that were to his left. The cushions on the furniture looked thick and comfortable.

“Pleasure,” she returned his shake, “lemon tea sounds wonderful.”

“So, Lieutenant, how long have you been in the field of security? I wasn’t quite able to figure that out from your service record,” asked Mathias as he headed over to sit down.

“Eight years,” Dierdre muled over the thought, “including the Academies. I originally attended Starfleet’s TSA to become a noncomm,” she clarified, “but one of my instructors convinced me to apply for the Academy about a year in. Needless to say, I wouldn’t be sitting with you if it weren’t for his persuasion.”

Mathias gave an understanding nod. “I didn’t really care for the Academy, at least not how long the training took. I wanted to get out there too. But anyways, can you tell me about your previous assignment?”
