Duncan shook her hand, and glanced down at Trico. Trico in return gave Sakai one of her patented chirp-barks and spread her wings momentarily in greeting before folding them back in. “Not exactly a pet,” he explained. “Her species tends to prefer to act as companions, and co-operate with people it seems. Pet is all at once wholly inadequate for the intelligence and ability she has.”

Akane knelt down next to Trico, “I’m very sorry if I offended you…please do accept my apologies,” she said sheepishly.

Trico chirped again and looked at Duncan. He raised his eyebrow and looked back up at Sakai, placing his hands behind his back as he spoke. His stance was very formal, straight backed and official but Duncan somehow made it look casual and natural and not forced or pompous. “Although patience or manners doesn’t seem to rank very highly with her, Counselor. She heard you on the comm, she told me to ask about the cake.”

Akane grinned as she turned around and picked up the box of cakes and offered one to Duncan then knelt down again and offered the box to Trico as a peace offering for any misunderstanding. “Of course, please do help yourselves,” she said warmly. Leaving the box with Duncan she wandered over to the replicator. “Can I offer either of you a drink Lt?” she asked, fingers poised over the console.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

“Nothing for Trico, thank you.” Duncan said, placing the box gently on the desk and looking over the selection. “I myself would appreciate a Cappuccino, double shot with chocolate and hazelnut, thank you.” Choosing a small cake, Duncan broke off a small piece and tossed it towards the small creature. She immediately caught it in her beak like mouth and seemed to chew it in the back of her jaws just for a moment before it was gone.

Akane nodded with a grin, “of course, good choice,” she remarked as she ordered his drink and set it down in front of him. She was normally more of a tea drinker but opted for a caramel latte for herself this time and returned to her seat with the mug.

Then, he settled into one of the chairs and adjusted his trouser legs, smoothed them down and rested the cake piece lightly on his knee, brushing the crumbs on his fingers back into the box. “How have you found the Outpost so far, Counselor?”

Akane laughed at the question, of the characters she had met so far, it was shaping up to be a very interesting assignment. “It’s…different?” she offered with a smirk. “I’ve only served on starships prior to this assignment so it’s going to take a bit of adjusting to I think. How about yourself? How long have you served here?” she asked. She knew she could just look at the Lt’s records but she always found it a good place to open up the conversation.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

“Nearly three years now,” he told her, his clipped English accent matter of fact. “I spent a number of years on Starships myself until this posting as Science Chief opened up and I was transferred here. “I’ve found the station to be a fascinating place as we learn more about the area the Romulan Empire covered before it’s collapse. It has certainly kept my team and I busy.”

Nay nodded as she made a few notes. “So, how did you find the adjustment from starship to outpost? I know it can sometimes be a bit of a shock to the system. Do you find you miss aspects of it?” she asked curiously.

Lt Sakai (CNS)

“Not at all,” Duncan said confidently. “We have plenty of work to do with the area’s opened up by the fall of the Romulan Empire, and having one central location to return to with more available facilities than a normal starship, has been beneficial to say the least. Not to mention access to more civilian establishments for R&R.”
