“It was a plasma conduit that blew actually. The power systems are ancient and they were working on them for the initial phase of the construction. It caused quite a mess on a couple of the lower decks. As for the defensive systems, well, I’m sure you won’t find a hundred year old station that’s had minimal updating in better shape. Fortunately we haven’t had to use them that often. We wouldn’t have held up in the incident with the Romulans and the mutant killer tribbles if it wasn’t for the Lancer.” The possibility crossed Mathias’s mind from time to time that perhaps they didn’t get every tribble off the outpost. Fortunately he had only seen them in nightmares since.

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Nikki was ticking the items off in his head. He was certain that the ‘fleet decided to send him into hell. Apparently they were a vindictive bunch with not bein happy that he had been cleared of his charges. So they sent him here. “Swell,” he replied behind his coffee mug. Well he would see to that. “How long has the Fleet had this station?” Having a warship around the area was nice but Nikki would sleep better knowing that they could keep a determined mosquito at bay. Right now he wasn’t confident that they could.

“Since Starfleet built it as a defense base against the Romulans and Klingons. I don’t know exactly how many years ago that was…a lot.” It was interesting for Mathias to describe his outpost to the newer officers. The condition of the station was something he had gotten used to and no longer minded. An outside perspective always helped shed fresh light on the familar.

Baldur shuddered, he had an innate dislike for tribbles due to his own bad experience with the creatures, he could hardly imagine what mutant killer tribbles looked like and the thought did not bring joy. “That’s the great thing about stations, doesn’t take much to beef up armaments, also helps to have a Pendragon flying around for support” Baldur allowed him a grim smile “If nothing else it gives me something to do.”

SOO - Baldur

“Who engineered the killer tribbles?” he asked. That intrigued him. “If ye can domesticate a targ or a sehlat then surely a killer tribble could be used fer defense too.” He knew a number of people he’d not mind feeding to them.
- Nikki

“I have no idea. I still have trouble believing one of those little devils bit me. I tell you, you’re right, they’re great for defense.” A sly smile crept over the captain’s face as he recalled how things had played out. “At least I assume they are because we never heard from the Romulans after we beamed them onto their ship.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Nikki wondered if there was such a thing a tribble spray to assign to the troops. He chuckled. Beamed on to a Rommie ship. Well, they could take turns biting each other then. Taking a thoughtful sip of his coffee he knew that this was going to take a while to get this put into shape. “Boss, do ye have any priorities ye’d like te see on the fix of this place? Or just take it deck by deck and hope for the best?” They definitely wanted him out of the way. But who was behind this, and why? If someone wanted to put a hit on him this was the place to do it.
- Nikki

Baldur laughed at the tribble comment but not as heartily as he could, in truth he had quite a soft spot for Romulans, not enough to not find it amusing but still enough to not find it hilarious. He leaned back in his seat and started thinking about his situation, where he was and what he would do here. If Brako could get the station in working order then all Baldur had to do was prove it’s strategic and tactical worth, perhaps not an easy task with the current political climate but where’s the fun in easy.

SOO - Baldur

“Well, Lieutenant, I don’t think you’ll find a shortage of tired systems on the Outpost and limping along power couplings. Your staff has been doing a great job holding everything together so I’m not aware of any particular urgent need. But I would start by making sure our vital operations like defense and life support are in top notch shape before fixing the weird gliches on the holodecks and the unique replicators they have in here.” Mathias looked around at the crew sitting at the other tables, all of whom seemed content with their meals. “No one seems to mind the quality of the food they produce for some reason anyhow.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Nikki nodded. He’d noticed some irregularities in the air circulation that he wanted to look into and ensure was working right. Not that he didn’t trust the people and not that he didn’t feel they were competent - he simply as yet didn’t know them.

“I would, of course, prefer that our defensive systems are prepared but a functioning sonic shower isn’t the worst thing in the world,” He said with a smile. Baldur looked at the other crew “Perhaps there are more here that follow my school fo thought than I previously believed” he said with amusement in his tone “There are worse things than sharing a meal with new friends and comrades”

SOO - Baldur

The Iotian had, at least on paper, enough people to do a lot of work that went beyond watching temperature levels off their power plants. So why, he wondered, was the place in such a state as it was? “I’m doin a tour this week checkin systems and decks at random, then comparin it with logs.” He didn’t want to come out and say that the place was a dive and shouldn’t be, but before he put a hit on anyone he wanted to have the goods on them. He saluted Baldur with his coffee mug at his comment. “Yer gang is yer gang,” he said.
Nikki

“Indeed” Baldur answered. He pulled out a small Chrono and looked at the time “Hmm, not too early” He mumbled to himself before returning his gaze to Nikki “Indeed it is.” He continued turning his attention to the people in there “I wonder why it is that it’s mostly crewmen and other junior officers, are the more senior staff afraid of this place?” He asked with a tone of amusement.

SOO - Baldur

“Birds of a feather,” Nikki replied. He shrugged. It didn’t matter where one went but the class system was alive and well even here. “There are things like officers’ messes and places for the junior ranks to be, whether they hoist a pint or a port.” If all this place had going for it was its coffee then it wouldn’t attract too many of the upper ranks whose palate tended to be more refined. He glanced at Baldur. Present company excepted, apparently. The massive fellow would make a good bouncer at a bar.
- Nikki

Baldur inclined his head seriously “That is true, such is Military tradition. I’ve always thought it was important for Senior staff to be seen by the crew in locals such as this. I learned a long time ago that it doesn’t take a lot to raise morale so long as you put actual work into it” As he spoke Baldur looked across the room and in his head analyzsed each crewmember eating and chatting. taking notes on their relationships and the room hierarchy.

SOO - Baldur

“That kind thinking is what brought me here today,” commented the captain. “I’m not sure if anything will result from it or not, but I think it’s good to make an appearance among the crew from time to time. Well, if I come again I don’t think I’ll come hungry next time.” Mathias cast another glance down at his mostly uneaten bowl and softly sighed.

Baldur chuckled at the Captain’s comment “Not a bad Idea Captain” He smiled widely, his teeth just visible through his bushy beard “I suppose it might not be a bad idea to sponsor a little Barbeque, get some meats and other grillables.” He looked at the kitchen and the servers working “I’d also like to see what it is they’re working with over there, sometimes it doens’t take much to make the bad food decent.” He shrugged “Well it’ll at least give people something to talk about.”

SOO - Baldur

Nikki perked his ears up at that. “Good idea.” Now he was totally used to something more upscale for a buffet, but had been known to organize a kind of barbeque buffet on the ships. “Pig roast could work too,” he commented. That could be done up in a way that was more festive. Still, one couldn’t quite escape the ambiance of a grilled up burger. Nikki simply was a little more grandiose in such things; such was the culture to which he was brought up.
- Nikki

“Indeed” Baldur agreed gleefully, “I think anything that works in a way to give people a chance to chat and have fun, cold beers good meat, a nice veggie burger or twelve. Not the standard Diplomatic buffet poeple are used to having on events.” He seemed happy that someone agreed with his idea. His last outpost had been much too standard Starfleet for Baldur to properly enjoy himself, someplace that could be built up into something was much more his style.

SOO - Baldur

Mathias chuckled as the two men reminded him of an incident that happened before either were on the Outpost. “I’m completely for this. If either of you want to take the idea and run with it, go for it. You’re reminding me of the last diplomatic buffet that we had here. A Vulcan admiral was visiting, Admiral Sabok. We had the best buffet line, including ribs that took 16 hours to cook that came from an honest to goodness actual pig. It was lost on the Vulcan and his aide, who was also Vulcan. But it was delicioius and the whole thing was a great time. Well, right up until one of the galley workers tried to assassinate the admiral.”

“Nothin like a good old fashioned hit to liven up a party,” Nikki said with a smile. “I’ll do it, boss,” he said. That sort of thing he was well able to do in his sleep. Of course he usually had an entire group of staff to do the sundries, but he had his boys too. A flicker of annoyance crossed his features for only a second as he realized that ‘all’ of his next in line engineers were dames. WHO did that anyway? Putting in dames whose sole purpose was to reeducate him on their rights as dames.

Nikki tipped his head towards the others in the mess. “Is this for the boys or for everyone?” He asked this as he wanted to know if there shouldn’t be a little degree of separation in the setup, and if it was going to be ‘big’ then he’d need more venue. And a theme. Nothin like a good theme for this. Sure he could stuff everyone in a holodeck but that was too easy. Way too easy. Now down on the planet. That could work. Not like the joint here couldn’t manage for a few hours on a skeleton crew.
— Nikki

Baldur smiled wrily and raised an eyebrow “I had presumed for everyone” His tone was still the same amused. He knew very little about the Sigma Iotian species but he’d heard rumors of their views on women. He’d met a few people like that in his time that to him they were mostly an amusing window into a past best learned from. “A sea of Combadges more than anything else.”

SOO - Baldur

“Oh,” said Mathias abruptly, looking at Nikki. “You’ll do it. You meant you’ll do the party. I thought you meant…uh, well, I mean, that’s fantastic.” The conversation had moved on, but Mathias had been fixated on the Iotian’s comment about how a hit livens up a party ever since he made it. Based on what he knew of their race he hadn’t initially taken it as a joke.

This would take some planning and some time down on the planet or transform a cargo bay. But it would give him something to do that he was good at. “Everyone just makes for a big event,” he replied. He turned to Mathias. “Boss, you have a date you want this in by?” The plan was basic and the people known. Just then he decided to do an all day event. People could get to it when off shift.
Nikki

Mathias rubbed his clean-shaved chin as he considered when the party should be. “Sooner than later. Let’s say by stardate 724839.6 if you’d find an arbitrary deadline helpful. I think it’d be a good time for this since there’s been a bit of a wave of new staff and the better everyone knows each other the more productive they will be. And having a good time here might slow down the transfers off of the decrepit Outpost.” While Mathias had always dreamed of leading people and making captain, now that he was in the role he had discovered that there were aspects of managing he hadn’t anticpated that went along with his authority. Making the big decisions and new discoveries turned out to play a smaller part while in reality he spent a lot of time keeping those above and below him happy. Still, he wouldn’t trade it.
