The COO had left the station on orders and Char had been left hanging for several days. After almost a week since the ship had left her practically stranded, she found herself coming down the corridor towards the Captain’s office wondering just how she was going to approach him. How does a warrior ask for a job and position in a place that probably had no use for her.

Tugging down the top of her training leathers, figuring it was less intimidating than traipsing down the corridors in full battle gear, she turned the corner and stepped into the receiving room. Once another person stepped away from the Secretary’s desk, Char stepped up. “Char’kat Morden here to see the Commanding Officer.” She nodded respectfully and tried not to look menacing as she smiled slightly. “I wish to request residency and work position.” She wasn’t exactly sure how to ask her questions, so putting it out there plain seemed the best way to begin.

The curly-haired young ensign in command red passed along the message using his computer terminal. A minute later the young man, with some evident nervousness, told her, ” Captain McGarrett will see you now.”

With that the door to the inner office swooshed open. Rising to his feet was the captain, which quickly made his above average height noticeable. He offered a welcoming smile and greeted her by saying, “Please come in, Ms. Morden. And have a seat. I understand you have an interest in living and working on the Outpost.”

His slightly taller frame, almost six inches higher than her own, was actually a welcome. It troubled her, sometimes, to always tower over those she spoke to. In her mind, leaders were meant to be larger versions of the general populous. And many men, especially those shorter than her, seemed to not realize it wasn’t just a natural height that made a difference but the way they carried themselves. Mr McGarrett seemed to have both in spades.

“Thank you, Sir,” she nodded and slowly moved to the offered seat. “I have come to ask for a way to earn my keep till my Captain returns. Though I cannot even give you a time frame on that. But I do know I cannot simply stand in the bar doorway and look opposing as a way to earn room and board on your Outpost. I should be useful in some way that is a benefit to you and the place we reside in.” She knew it was a long shot, but she had to ask. She was effectively stranded here and her own resources for food and room would run out soon as they were currently being given to her on a pity basis. But pity only takes you so far. And she hated how far she’d used it already.

Mathias returned to his seat behind his desk. “Well, you could earn your keep by doing that actually. We call those people security,” he mused. The odds of a Klingon warrior with an uncertain future appreciating his sense of humor were probably pretty low, but why should he let that stop him?

The captain continued, “Let’s see, last time I saw Khain of the House of Kholl he was joking about jabbing pirates in the belly with a dagger. That’s a skill that has its usefulness in the right moment. I assume you have a skillset beyond pirate jabbing that you can offer? It’s not unheard of to have some non-Starfleet crew serving on a station, so we could certainly use all the help we can get. It takes quite the resources just to keep this old rust bucket of an Outpost from falling apart on us.”
