The COO had left the station on orders and Char had been left hanging for several days. After almost a week since the ship had left her practically stranded, she found herself coming down the corridor towards the Captain’s office wondering just how she was going to approach him. How does a warrior ask for a job and position in a place that probably had no use for her.

Tugging down the top of her training leathers, figuring it was less intimidating than traipsing down the corridors in full battle gear, she turned the corner and stepped into the receiving room. Once another person stepped away from the Secretary’s desk, Char stepped up. “Char’kat Morden here to see the Commanding Officer.” She nodded respectfully and tried not to look menacing as she smiled slightly. “I wish to request residency and work position.” She wasn’t exactly sure how to ask her questions, so putting it out there plain seemed the best way to begin.

The curly-haired young ensign in command red passed along the message using his computer terminal. A minute later the young man, with some evident nervousness, told her, ” Captain McGarrett will see you now.”

With that the door to the inner office swooshed open. Rising to his feet was the captain, which quickly made his above average height noticeable. He offered a welcoming smile and greeted her by saying, “Please come in, Ms. Morden. And have a seat. I understand you have an interest in living and working on the Outpost.”

His slightly taller frame, almost six inches higher than her own, was actually a welcome. It troubled her, sometimes, to always tower over those she spoke to. In her mind, leaders were meant to be larger versions of the general populous. And many men, especially those shorter than her, seemed to not realize it wasn’t just a natural height that made a difference but the way they carried themselves. Mr McGarrett seemed to have both in spades.

“Thank you, Sir,” she nodded and slowly moved to the offered seat. “I have come to ask for a way to earn my keep till my Captain returns. Though I cannot even give you a time frame on that. But I do know I cannot simply stand in the bar doorway and look opposing as a way to earn room and board on your Outpost. I should be useful in some way that is a benefit to you and the place we reside in.” She knew it was a long shot, but she had to ask. She was effectively stranded here and her own resources for food and room would run out soon as they were currently being given to her on a pity basis. But pity only takes you so far. And she hated how far she’d used it already.

Mathias returned to his seat behind his desk. “Well, you could earn your keep by doing that actually. We call those people security,” he mused. The odds of a Klingon warrior with an uncertain future appreciating his sense of humor were probably pretty low, but why should he let that stop him?

The captain continued, “Let’s see, last time I saw Khain of the House of Kholl he was joking about jabbing pirates in the belly with a dagger. That’s a skill that has its usefulness in the right moment. I assume you have a skillset beyond pirate jabbing that you can offer? It’s not unheard of to have some non-Starfleet crew serving on a station, so we could certainly use all the help we can get. It takes quite the resources just to keep this old rust bucket of an Outpost from falling apart on us.”

Char let her eyebrow raise at the security jab. A slight smile touched her lips. Though like most Klingons, it made her look more ominous and by no means jovial. “I guess I hadn’t considered Security, Sir.” It was meant to come out a sarcastic joke, but she wasn’t sure if it came across that way. At his comment of jabbing pirates being one of her many talents, she nodded. “I can also jab drunks and anyone you point at. But I also have skills with mechanical issues and often helped with the maintenance upon the ship. I am not completely familiar with most Federation ships beyond their weak points for firing upon. But even there I could point out places where ships may be in need of bolstering.” She was silent a moment before inclining her head. “Though, as you say, security is always a sound choice as well if you are in need of someone to keep the peace. And help bring it back when it slides.”

She hadn’t considered standing at a bar door as being useful. But as the Captain spoke, it dawned on her that a place like the Outpost needed calm as well as any ship or station. Any place that was packed like this was a tinderbox for riots and chaos from everything from boredom and space fever, to too much drink. It made her feel at least a slight bit better about how she had spent her time earning her keep thus far.

Jabbing anyone he pointed at with a dagger, now that was something Mathias could figure out a use for. He tried not to get any ideas of who that might be. “Well, keeping the peace is something we could use help with, but keeping all the pieces from falling apart is probably a bigger need. Either way, I’d be happy to have your help, but we’d need to go over some ground rules first.” Mathias hadn’t fully thought through what those ground rules might be yet, but he was pretty sure there must be some things they’d have to get on the same page with since she wasn’t Starfleet. He had gotten quite good at totally making things up on the fly and acting confidently after doing so.

“I am more than happy to keep things from falling apart, Sir. If that is your bigger need. The question is,” and Char grinned slightly, once more teasing. “Is it the physical you fear falling apart, or the human factor, you worry about more? The stability of the station and its components in an environment such as this is certainly a main priority. In which case, I am more than happy to help. But if there is more of a worry of the human element, or rather, the occupant element you fear more, then I would recommend you set me to security.” She wasn’t going to bother adding that it was his hide she would be looking after more than anyone else. Anything that happened on the Outpost was bound to affect him in one way or another. It was that protection Char was offering in the back of her mind above all else. Whatever he assigned her to do was secondary and merely a means to the first.

Mathias raised an eyebrow. Something about her response he wasn’t expecting. Perhaps it was the grin. He hadn’t quite gotten over his long held stereotype that Klingons were always stern and serious. “Oh I worry more about the station physcially falling apart. The people will always cause challenges. But I spent seventeen years living in close proximity to the most obnoxious resident on the Outpost. If I figured that out I can figure out a way to handle the rest.” He offered a slight smile as he concluded.

She watched his eyebrow rise and grinned to herself. She had him wondering. That was a good thing. “Then perhaps I shall join the mechanics and engineers. While slight bodies are best for crawling around in conduits, sometimes large hands and a hefty lifting limit are needed more. With your permission, I’ll meet with whomever you wish and we can go over the station specs to see what’s most in need of repairs, find out why they haven’t been done, and see to them immediately.” She relaxed a bit inside as she realized she had a purpose now.

Her observation was interesting as Mathias hadn’t considered how physical stature would be important for engineers. He supposed she was right as the last time he was crawling through a Jeffrey’s tube it wasn’t exactly easy to avoid banging his head. “That would be Lieutenant Warren. However, first you need to be cleared to serve on the crew with both Counselor Harland and with medical. All crew serving on a new assignment in Starfleet need to be cleared for service. You’ll be no exception. Also, you, like all those serving in Starfleet, will need to observe Starfleet protocols. Many races with many cultures serve in Starfleet and in order to maintain order we all need to play by the same set of rules. It may be acceptable in Klingon culture to fight to the death when you are offended by another’s behavior, but that will not work here.”

“And I think additional security for yourself and your office should be in order as well. This office needs to be refitted to stand alone in the case of a breech, as well.” All Captains needed to have an escape pod or life boat of sorts. A place to go in emergency that would keep them safe till rescue. And the location of the office was a prime place for his own life boat.

Mathias considered the suggestion and thought it had some merit, even if he didn’t exactly see the critique coming. “Very well, after you are cleared for duty feel free to make the suggestion to Commander Tenkiller. Well, hopefully you’re not the sort that minds attending meetings since I’ve lined several up for you. I’m afraid we’re an organized bunch here in Starfleet. It’s not always about chasing glory.”
