“I am more than happy to keep things from falling apart, Sir. If that is your bigger need. The question is,” and Char grinned slightly, once more teasing. “Is it the physical you fear falling apart, or the human factor, you worry about more? The stability of the station and its components in an environment such as this is certainly a main priority. In which case, I am more than happy to help. But if there is more of a worry of the human element, or rather, the occupant element you fear more, then I would recommend you set me to security.” She wasn’t going to bother adding that it was his hide she would be looking after more than anyone else. Anything that happened on the Outpost was bound to affect him in one way or another. It was that protection Char was offering in the back of her mind above all else. Whatever he assigned her to do was secondary and merely a means to the first.

Mathias raised an eyebrow. Something about her response he wasn’t expecting. Perhaps it was the grin. He hadn’t quite gotten over his long held stereotype that Klingons were always stern and serious. “Oh I worry more about the station physcially falling apart. The people will always cause challenges. But I spent seventeen years living in close proximity to the most obnoxious resident on the Outpost. If I figured that out I can figure out a way to handle the rest.” He offered a slight smile as he concluded.

She watched his eyebrow rise and grinned to herself. She had him wondering. That was a good thing. “Then perhaps I shall join the mechanics and engineers. While slight bodies are best for crawling around in conduits, sometimes large hands and a hefty lifting limit are needed more. With your permission, I’ll meet with whomever you wish and we can go over the station specs to see what’s most in need of repairs, find out why they haven’t been done, and see to them immediately.” She relaxed a bit inside as she realized she had a purpose now.

Her observation was interesting as Mathias hadn’t considered how physical stature would be important for engineers. He supposed she was right as the last time he was crawling through a Jeffrey’s tube it wasn’t exactly easy to avoid banging his head. “That would be Lieutenant Warren. However, first you need to be cleared to serve on the crew with both Counselor Harland and with medical. All crew serving on a new assignment in Starfleet need to be cleared for service. You’ll be no exception. Also, you, like all those serving in Starfleet, will need to observe Starfleet protocols. Many races with many cultures serve in Starfleet and in order to maintain order we all need to play by the same set of rules. It may be acceptable in Klingon culture to fight to the death when you are offended by another’s behavior, but that will not work here.”

“And I think additional security for yourself and your office should be in order as well. This office needs to be refitted to stand alone in the case of a breech, as well.” All Captains needed to have an escape pod or life boat of sorts. A place to go in emergency that would keep them safe till rescue. And the location of the office was a prime place for his own life boat.

Mathias considered the suggestion and thought it had some merit, even if he didn’t exactly see the critique coming. “Very well, after you are cleared for duty feel free to make the suggestion to Commander Tenkiller. Well, hopefully you’re not the sort that minds attending meetings since I’ve lined several up for you. I’m afraid we’re an organized bunch here in Starfleet. It’s not always about chasing glory.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Mar nodded. “I will get the clearances you require. I assure you I am in good health. I shall also be ready for the meetings you speak of if you wish me to attend them. As to chasing glory,” she smiled that grin that made one wonder if she was smiling or leering at you. “Klingons do not chase glory. It usually is found bloody at our feet when it crosses our path.”

Mathias raised his eyebrows. There could be no doubt that there was Klingon blood in her.

She let that linger between them a moment before smiling. “But fear not, Captain. I have no desire to bloody your staff merely to prove I am Klingon. I think restraint and usefulness, in this case, are perhaps more important. Yes?”

The captain returned the smile. “Yes, indeed. Otherwise I’d have to transfer you away from Operations and have you help maintain the cleanliness of the flooring instead. Blood can leave such a mess and I wouldn’t want to step in it.”

At his mention of allowing her to protect him better by upgrading his location, she nodded. “And thank you for allowing me to speak to someone about this location. I believe several people are important. But none as much as the leader of a ship or station or people. And here, you are that person.” She wasn’t sure how well she would get along with everyone. Or how well everyone would accept her. Brute strength and tactics were her strong suits. But she would find a way to make them count so she could remain here and wait for her own Captain to return.

Mathias refrained from cracking a smile, but there was a hint of something mischievous in his eye as he spoke. “You’re quite welcome, Ms. Morden. Anytime you need something from me, just bring up exactly how important I am and I’ll be sure to take care of it.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Char laughed then. “I think there may be Klingon somewhere in your bloodline.” Her laughter was hardier than he had ever heard it and it rumbled but was soft at the same time. An odd juxtaposition given her nature. “Several Klingon Captains are the same way. Stroke their ego and they will give up their personal targ for you.” She was liking the man more and more. Perhaps she didn’t want her Captain coming back so swiftly, after all.

Mathias laughed as well, letting go of the practiced poker face he often deployed when trying to make a subtle joke. The longer he spoke with her the more he figured he would enjoy having her as a member of the crew. “Well, truth be told I may not be so easily persuaded. But in my own way I’ve made a career out of chasing glory, so I may not be all that different.”

“Who would you like me to report to and when?” She left the smirk in her eyes as she asked. Things were certainly not going to be boring around here.

“Maybe the list was too long? First get cleared by Counselor Harland and whoever is on duty in the Infirmary. Then report to Lieutenant Warren. And last at your convenience you can make your suggestion to Lieutenant Commander Tenkiller. Wait to do any of it until tomorrow though so I can have a chance to inform them that you’ll be serving with us. Got that all straight?” Mathias asked. Saying it all out loud one more time he wasn’t surprised it was a bit too much to memorize immediately for someone who likely was not familiar with the Outpost’s senior staff.

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Char nodded. “The list wasn’t too long. The order was not clear. On a Klingon ship, one would report to their superior before anything else. They, alone, would give leave to see anyone else when time permitted. I will get the proper clearances before reporting to Lieutenant Warren. And I will be sure Lieutenant Commander Tenkiller is apprised of my suggestions as soon as I am allowed.” She shook her head. “I understand the reason to let others in on my arrival and duties. But it is curious that my supervisor will be the last to see and know of me.” She laughed lightly. “You are all so backwards. No wonder your quarters are not better protected. With things running backwards, I imagine no one ever gave it thought.”

“With you permission, Captain, I shall let the establishment know of my new duties so he can find another strong arm for the door. I am sure I can still keep my quarters there, though.” She hadn’t given thoughts to that, till just this second. If she wasn’t working for the bar anymore, would the man still allow her the room she slept in? It didn’t matter, really. She could always get a room in one of the temporary places on the outpost. After all, they had visitors enough that hotel type businesses were all over the place.
