Zhi-anne’s next stop was the COs office. She was keen to meat the commanding officer as she had a feeling she would be working with him often. It was a strange situation to find herself in, Zhi-anne thought. She had originally planned to just open her temple and continue her normal duties. But when she was told she would also act as the Outposts Counsellor she was shocked. Of course she was trained as where all her sisters, but to be asked to take senior position on the outpost as well, that had completely blindsided her. But she knew it must be the will of Katooni and that thought gave her peace.

As she walked she wandered what events she would be a part of and how many would come to her for advice. She also wondered how many would be turned off by the fact that their counsellor was a religious figure. Of course she knew that they wouldn’t openly say anything, but she knew some would not want to talk with her. That was fine once they learnt she wasn’t there to covert anyone, she was only there to spread the word and help who she could. Perhaps they would come around.

With all her wondering she found herself at the COs office in short order. She double checked the box she was carrying and the padd she needed. Then pressed the chime.

High Priestess Zhi-anne (Counsellor)

The door in front of Zhi-anne swooshed open, revealing a small empty room with a long, skinny table on the left side. Aside from a plant in the corner, the room was vacant. Straight ahead a second door opened after the first. Seated at a desk that looked out to the door was a man in thirties in command red. He set down a PADD that was in his hand and rose to his feet, which quickly made his above average height obvious.

“Welcome, please come in. I’m Captain Mathias McGarrett.” The captain motioned with his hand towards a seat that was on the other side of the desk he had been sitting at.

Zhi-anne walked in and over to the CO. She approached him and bowed her head offering the box “May she guide and watch over you. High priestess Zhi-anne at your service. Please accept this gift from my order on behalf of the foundation.” she said respectfully, opening the box as she spoke. Inside was a crystal that was light blue in colour with swirls of white, light seemed to dance within it and it gave out a soft, soothing hum.

After walking further in an additional seating area would be visible to the right in the L-shaped office. “Thank you. I gladly accept,” replied Captain McGarrett, who then took the box from her. He took a moment to look at the crystal and consider the unusual gift. The thoughtfulness gave him a wonderful first impression of the new counselor.

“We thank you for allowing us to open our temple on your outpost. I also wanted to thank you for giving my such an honoured position as the counsellor for the outpost” she added her tone still respectfully but genuine gratitude could be heard also.

High priestess Zhi-anne (Counsellor)

“You’re welcome. Please, have a seat. Can I get you a beverage?” As he spoke Mathias noticed his own voice seeming a bit softer than usual. He supposed his unintentional shift in tone was a natural response to the kind-hearted woman before him.

“A water would be much appreciated” Zhi-anne said as she took a seat. She had to admit that the CO was giving a great first impression. He seemed kind but fair and Zhi-anne could appreciate that. He had already displayed a brilliantly open mind, by allowing her to set up a temple on his outpost.

Mathias returned to the seat behind his desk and set the crystal upon it. “I understand your qualifications and I appreciate your willingness to fill this position. But before we get too far I just want to make sure you feel like a Starfleet role is something you are up for. If it’s not now would be a great time to know.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

“I have pledged my life to serve and help others. And while I may not be a star fleet officer i hold myself and my order to a standard, similar to what is expected by those who serve the federation and all other powers.” she said her tone still clam and serene “I am confident in my abilities but, as with all things, time will tell if I am truly ready for such a position. Either way I intend to discharge my duties to the best of my ability.” she added after taking a sip of her water.

High priestess Zhi-anne (Counsellor)

Mathias nodded, pleased by her answer. “Based on what you are saying I really believe this will work. I’ll admit this is an experimental approach to staffing a Starfleet counseling position. How will you handle if this ends up being a bit stretching for members of the crew? I don’t think many of us are used to interacting with someone who’s title is high priestess.” The title certainly had been a new one for Mathias as it wasn’t a part of his usual vocabulary. He was hoping that it wouldn’t discourage his staff from giving her an open-minded chance.

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

“I had similar thoughts.” Zhi-anne said truthfully “However all I can do is offer my services. I hope people will come to me easily. But I understand that it might be strange and difficult for them. So I’ve decide I’ll spend every other day for a few hours in the counsellors office and the other days at my temple. Your crew can then see me where they see fit. I will also not expect them to call me high priestess they can call me miss or Zhi-anne, whatever they are comfortable with. Other then that all I can do is be there when they need me.” she added pausing for a moment.

“I hope in time, my title and my life choices, will not be as much of a hurdle as it may start out to be. As always I am here to help not convert” Zhi-anne said truthfully. She knew it would be a long road but she hoped that she would be seen as another member of the crew. Someone that can help and be relied on.

“That’s all I can ask for,” replied Mathias. He then let his curiosity get the best of him. Mathias was, after all, an explorer at heart and when he came across something new he felt a need to understand it. “I must say I am wondering what the title of high priestess means. It sounds awfully important.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Zhi-anne nodded “It is the second highest position in our foundation. As a High priestess I am the leader of an order, there are fourteen orders. weeach serve on he council and give our suggestion to the high priest. However I have been given the honour of founding a new order. This is a very rare privilege as it is only reserved for those the arch priest deems worthy. There hasn’t been an order founding for one hundred years.” She said pride in her voice. to her there could have been a greater honour and she was right to be proud of it. However she knew she must always be mindful of her feelings.

“Wow, that is quite an accomplishment,” remarked Mathias. Most of his career he had been fixated on landing the most important position he could. It always pleased him to come across someone else who seemed to have similar ambitions.

“As a High Priestess I am responsible for the well being of those that serve in my order, their health, their basic, their physical and their spiritual needs, are all my responsibility. I lead the sermons and I am the go between, between my order and the leaders of where ever we have set up. I’m also expected to send back progress reports and any request we may have. But I am also given a small purse s that we may buy what we need. Many of my sisters have specific role and they each speak to me if they need specific things or want an extra pair of hands.” She added pausing for a moment and taking a drink of water

“I suppose you could say, being a high priestess is like being a captain. I have the final say but I rely on those under me to get the job done. Their safety is my key concern and I must discharge that duty with the upmost care and attention. I am also the figure head of my order, and if preform poorly it reflects badly on the order” she said finally.

High Priestess Zhi-anne (Counselor)

“And you also have an authority figure over you who you report to at the end of the day. It does sound quite similar actually.” As Mathias considered her explanation, he couldn’t help but notice just how time consuming of a role it sounded like. “I have great respect for what your are doing with your new order and I hope you find the Outpost to be a suitable home for it. I can’t help but wonder though…is the counselor position going to be too much from you? I don’t really know how things work for you, but from how you described it your schedule already sounds quite full.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Zhi-anne nodded “No, i will not be seeing patients 24/7, I believe the human expression is. In the quiet times I can get on with the paper work and administrative duties I have. we have set times for morning, evening and afternoon services and our meal times a set as well. This gives me the chance to plan around those times. I also said I would divide my time between my temple, where I will still be available if someone needs counselling services, and the counsellors office. Every other day, except for the weekend I will be in the counsellors office.” she said pausing for a moment. she had put a lot of planning and thought into it and she had, had the blessing of the foundation to preform her duel role.

“While it will be hard work as I get used to it, I know hard work in service of Katooni and the people of this station is my sacred duty.” she added.

The notion of serving the people of the Outpost being a sacred duty was a new concept for Mathias. Just maybe it was his sacred duty as well, even if he hadn’t thought of it as such. He found the way she seemed to view everything in life through her religious lens different, but refreshing at the same time. He supposed there wasn’t a whole lot of sense in having religious convictions that didn’t have an impact on every aspect of life. Having a new thought-provoking member of his senior staff was something Mathias was looking forward to. “I don’t doubt your ability to juggle it all, but I still know it will be a lot and we’ll have to monitor how this is going. It goes with the territory whenever an experimental approach is taken. But I feel this will prove worthwhile.”

“As do I Captain” She said in agreement

“Do you have any other questions for me or is there anything you would like to know about the station before I allow you to continue the boarding process?” the captain asked.

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Zhi-anne thought for a moment, she had a lot of questions but she decided t start with a more standard one “I know usually a councillor is part of the senior team. so I was wondering what exactly will that entail? I’m guessing it will include giving you briefings on the state of the crew and being part of all senior staff meeting. But what else will I be required to do?” she asked, Zhi-anne new the basic and knew the majority of what she would have to do. However she was keen t here it in Mathias’s own words.

High Priestess Zhi-anne (CNS)

<BUMP>

“Yes, that is part of it,” said Mathias, nodding. “I also rely on the counselor to help with visitors to the Outpost. That may be offering insight on a hostile captain threatening us or seeing to the needs of an ambassador on board. I’ll also look to you for advice on difficult situations, typically not in front of the crew. Without an authority figure above me that is here it can be helpful to hear the perspective of the XO or the counselor before I make a difficult decision.”

After pausing for a moment, the captain continued, “Oh, and I’ll have you help with crew evaluations. At least those are the things I have in mind. We’ll see how it works out in reality.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Zhi-anne nodded “I see, I hope i can serve you well, and hat my previous experiences as an advisor will help you.” she sad respectfully. Zhi-anne had learnt to read body language from a young age and hoped she would be able to apply that to any situation she could. It was a lot of responsibility but Zhi-anne knew that of she put her faith as she had always done in Katooni and those around her, then she knew it would turn out well.

“As for the crew evaluations, when can I book you in? and are there any particular times that would not be good for your senior staff?” she asked.

High Priestess Zhi-anne (CNS)

“0900 isn’t a good time as that is when the standing meeting is for the senior staff. Other than that is would depend on everyone’s schedule. I’ll have you work with Commander Teller on the evaluations. I just rubber stamp when we’re moving people around or doing promotions or deciding to push someone out of the airlock. Really I’m just here for the glamorous part at the end and I’ll let you and the XO do the actual work, with input from the department heads of course.” Mathias had his usual dry delivery with humor, as always highly amused with himself even if he didn’t make that particularly evident. He was a jokester at heart and tended to let that creep out regardless of the situation he was in.

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Zhi-anne smiled warmly “I’ll make sure to log the nearest airlock to my office” she said amusement in her voice. Despite what some might think Zhi-anne could take a joke and appreciate others humour. Just because she had chosen a life of religious service didn’t mean she sworn away her ability to have fun. Joy was one of the best medicines in life and one of the best motivators

“Are there any other mandatory meetings I should know about?” she asked “And when shall I book you in” she added after a short pause.
