This was not the day Chloe expected. It never was in medical. Life was like a light switch that switched moments on and off. So much of the time one sat around waiting for things to happen. You could stock shelves, wipe counters, call back patients, or inject the person that rolled in once an hour with a hypo treating whatever common ailment they presented with at the moment. These were not the moments however that made one wonder if this was the correct path for them in life. The moments that did were the ones where your finger was lodged in the puncture wound of an individual surrounded by all eyes staring at you to fix the situation like Chloe was experiencing now.

The hum of the ventilator system’s white noise was now replaced by the cacophony of voices. Each voice was a question, a comment, or a demand yet Chloe could not separate them out individually. “I need help,” she yelled out for anyone in sickbay to respond. Only in extreme cases was one beamed directly into sickbay which is how Ensign Jones arrived. The red stain of blood pooling under the biobed in long steady drips lead a trail back to the large spot where Jones and the four other engineers had materialized. Closing her eyes Chloe took a deep breath remembering back to Cestus where she learned real medical instead of the tricorder and lollipop medical she doled out here. She could feel Jones’ pulse slowing slightly indicating he was bleeding out. Chloe didn’t need to look down at her finger plugging the hole trying to stem the tide of crimson liquid pumping rhythmically from his body. She could feel the warm rush with each beat of this slowing heart.

Stifling curses under her breath that the men in engineering had reacted by pulling out the pipe that had impaled Jones’ lower abdomen, she shouted out again. “I need help now,” Chloe yelled sharply before trying to take a calming tone with the patient. Right now there was nothing she could do. If she removed her hand, Jones would bleed out. If she waited much longer he would die anyway. All Chloe could do was wait for help.

Paige came over “What’s going on?” She asked taking in the scene before her. She grabbed a auto suture “What happened here?” Paige demanded.

Seconds later, Harry Arrived and asked the same “we need to stop this bleeding, find out where it exactly it’s coming from” he said before he grabbed Chloes hand, moving it and applying a heavy amount of pressure to the wound

Blood spurted out from the puncture wound like a pump sending thickened, dark pulses of fluid against the palm of Dr. McKinley. It was hot and began to seep instantly between his fingers. “From what I can tell its a gastrointestinal perforation involving the celiac artery,” Chloe reported pushing a lock of hair off her face with the back of her hand. “It would explain why his BP is continuing to drop. There may be some involvement of the diaphragm explaining the dark color due to deoxygenation of the blood,” she reported rapidly as she grabbed a dermal suture and some surgical clamps. Chloe looked at the new doctor and paused only to receive directions from him on how he wanted to proceed in treating the patient. Chloe had been a nurse long enough to know that her job was to assist the doctor and not suggest she was ready to treat the patient. That was a lesson she learned the hard way on Cestus. Being six months pregnant she angled herself to manage being as close as needed but not let her belly interfere with access to the patient.
