As one of the few places where fresh food could prepared, Tenkiller had taken great pains to make sure the ingredients and specific recipie had made it complete and intact to the kitchen manager. So the Bolian’s current attitude was problematic, to say the least.

“What do you mean, ‘I just cant do it it’s too complicated.’?!? It’s three freaking ingredients! And I gave all of them to you specifically just yesterday! And we went over the recipie! Now it’s an issue? C’mon, man. Don’t do me like that. You and I both know something else is up. Why can’t I get my fry bread? Hell, you can give the extra to your staff, I dont care! I just want what you and I agreed to…”

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka had come in to get something to eat, a feat she rarely managed to accomplish at any time during normal day hours. As she walked in, she saw someone arguing with the cook. Walking over, frowning, she waited for a pause. “Excuse me… something wrong here, Officer?” She recognized the Security Chief from around the ship but they hadn’t met since her return.

While most in the galley were in off duty attire, Toveka was wearing her ever present uniform. It was whispered behind her back that she didn’t actually own anything else.

Tekiller whipped his head to look at her, the long braid of black hair down his back dancing at the movement. “Oh, hey L-T. Yeah… lots.” and he looked back at the cook. “Again. Its fry… bread. It not complicated, it’s not hard, it’s not complicated. It’s just what the name says. You want me to come back and show you? Seriously. It takes like ten minutes. You give me ten minutes, I’ll give you a simple dish that you wont run out of… for a change. You get something, I get my damn fry bread. Everybody wins!”, the last sentence said with obvious sarcasm.

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka frowned. “You said ‘what we agreed on’. What was the agreement?” She glanced at both men, though her eyes were caught on Tenkiller perhaps a bit longer than they should have been.

Tenkiller waved her off for a moment. “You got 15 minutes. If it isn’t ready, I’m coming back there and cooking it my damn self. Okay?” and he turned and looked at Toveka. “Gave this guy the recipie and ingredients to make some fry bread, kind of a staple where I grew up. He said he could do it no problem. So today I come in, and he’s waving me off like I asked him to make a baked Alaska or some such. Its three ingredients. Four if you count the oil its fried in.” and he looked back into the kitchen and yelled “You have fries, for god’s sake! I know you have a deep fryer!”

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka frowned as the cook disappeared into the back grumbling. “I suppose if you had an arrangement, being upset makes sense. But did you ask him ‘why’ it was suddenly a problem? I know several 3 and 4 ingredient recipes I would not even attempt on my best day.”

Tenkiller nodded. “I did. And he gave three different reasons. One didn’t make sense and two contradicted each other. That’s why I’m pissed. If he just couldn’t do it is one thing… not doing it for some reason he’s lying to me about is another.”

Tenkiller, CoS

“May I suggest you join me and try and relax while he makes your bread? Which seems like a silly reason to get this worked up, honestly. Hand made or not.” She didn’t understand why the huge fuss about ‘bread’ of all things It’s not like it was a major dinner component for anything.

Tenkiller shook his head and said “No no no… fry bread. It’s not bread. It’s… never mind. Look, the point is he isn’t making it even after I gave him the ingredients and the recipie and he said he would. So if you can sort out that little conundrum, then yes… I’ll calm down. I’ll even let you try some.” and he grinned at her and winked.

Tenkiller, CoS

Still not catching the nuances of the importance of side a side piece, she nodded. “Go and sit, have a drink, eat what you were gonna eat. I will go speak to him.” She nodded and headed into the kitchen. Looking for the man Tenkiller had been speaking with, she got his attention.

“Forgive me, but is there a reason for saying you would make them and now you can’t?” She was direct without being rude.

The kitchen manager looked at her and said “Yeah. I could when he asked. I can’t now. Now get outta my kitchen, you ain’t supposed to be back here.” and he turned away from her and yelled at someone in the back to hurry up.

Not the Swedish Chef

“Why “can’t” you do it now? If the recipe is too difficult, or you are short handed, I’ll be happy to tell the Chief he can come back and make it.” She hoped it didn’t come to that. She wasn’t sure she really wanted them in the same space together.

He glared at her and said “I just don’t feel like making it, all right? I’ve got better use for the eggs and flour, and his recipe sounds disgusting. There. Satisfied? Now get out.”

Conscripting Food Is Stealing

Toveka frowned. “Then I shall simply ask for his ingredients back. And I will slot kitchen time in thirty minutes and we will make it.” She nodded to the counter. “Set them all there, I will collect them and place them in the Officer’s storage fridge. And I recommend you ‘don’t’ break any eggs that were left in your possession.” She was calm but her stance and inflection let him know she was not fooling around.

The cook glowered at her but said nothing other than “Fine.” before stomping off. A minute later a smaller freckle faced human woman of about twenty came forward with a small crate containing the ingredients. “Heya, Ma’am. Sorry about Torvo. He lost big last night at the poker table so he’s taking it out on everyone. But he’s an all right guy most of the time. Here’s the stuff for that bread thing the Security Chief wants. And I’ve cleared a fryer for you guys whenever you want. If you need anything, just holler for Becca, that’s me. Happy to help!” and she set the crate down and trotted away.

Becca Is The Only One Who Cares

Toveka nodded and smiled. “Not an excuse. But I appreciate the explanation.” She watched the woman walk off and headed back into the dining hall. The items left on the edge of the counter for a moment.

She looked for and moved towards Tenkiller. She wasn’t one to walk around with a smile on her face. But when she came up, she wasn’t scowling. “Sir,” she said coming up beside him. “I have acquired the ingredients and a deep fryer for your use. I will be handling the Cook but I will tell you that unless you wish to cook it, the bread will not be made. Would you like to join me in the kitchen? I would be happy to assist in any way possible.”

He looked at her for a moment and then shrugged. “Sure. And it’s not ‘sir’ when I’m not in uniform. Call me Charles, or Skip if you want.” and he stood up and said “And thanks. Been a bit homesick. Fry bread always helps.” and he led her into the kitchen and picked up the crate.

Soon they were at the deep fryer. Tenkiller had a large bowl and had put in flour and salt and was whipping eggs together. “Some people just throw it all in a bowl and mix it. But I find if you beat the eggs first, then add, it makes the bread more light and fluffy.” and he did just that. He then took another few eggs, beat them together, and poured them directly into the fryer where they bubbled and popped before congealing into a solid, flat mass floating on top.

“My mom always did this in a skillet. But unless you have cast iron, it doesnt work real well.” He had an odd accent… a drawl some humans called it. He took the better and poured it onto the fried egg, and it spread out and puffed up. He waited a moment, then flipped the batter over and it was a golden brown. He did this eight or ten times, making a stack of brown discs that looked like thick, light, pancakes.

“And there we go.” he said and threw the now charred mass of eggs onto the recycler. “Wanna try one?”

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka had joined him and watched in fascination at the deep fried bread. When he offered her a piece, she nodded. “Thank you.” Taking a bite of the deep fried concoction, she nodded. “It tastes pretty good. I can see why it is a comfort to you. Thank you for sharing it, Si… Charles.” She nodded. “And forgive me, I am Toveka. Though you are welcome to use the name anytime you wish. I doubt you will ever find me out of uniform in a place you can offer such greeting.” She smiled.

He looked at her and blinked once, a small smile crossing his lips and then vanishing. “Ok, Toveka. Now if you would like, I was about to have dinner. You are welcome to join me if you want to.”

The cook came by and eyed the fry bread and Tenkiller held a finger up to Toveka. “Hey. Catch.” and he tossed one to the blue skinned man. He caught it and took a bite… and then another. Tenkiller chuckled and said “See? Was that so freakin’ hard? You put one of those witha’ bowl of chili and you gonna make a whole lotta people happy.” and he picked up the plate and started to leave… and the cook grabbed another as he passed. Tenkiller didnt look back, he just yelled over his shoulder “First one’s free! After that y’all gotta pay!” and he made his way to a table.
