Toveka moved to her desk and tapped out a query to where the CMO would be around 2100 (9pm). Realizing the woman was in her quarters both eased and worried Toveka. In her quarters, the request the Science Chief was about to make would be private. But if the woman was in bed…

She shook her head. If she didn’t ask she was gonna toss and turn all night. She sat in front of her comm and tapped the query. If Lieutenant Stone didn’t answer in a couple moments, she’d record a message and see her tomorrow.

Paige got the message “Come on over.” She said “I’ll put on some coffee.” Paige said as she turned up the lights and made sure that the coffee was on. She slipped on a pair of sweats and a t-shirt and fluffy slippers.

Unaware she had wakened the Chief, Toveka arrived a few moments later, in uniform, and tapped the chime. When she was admitted entrance, the CSO stepped in timidly and looked around. In all her time here, she hadn’t come to the Medical Chief’s quarters. “Forgive me, I didn’t mean to intrude so late.” She noticed the woman’s manner of dress. “I can speak to you tomorrow if you prefer.” There was a look of sincerity on her face, but also a lost look.

Paige smiled “Come in come in. Now is fine.” She said “As long as you don’t mind a Chief Medical Officer that isn’t put together and wearing her civies.” Paige said “Coffee? I just brewed a pot.” She said gesturing to an old time coffee maker. Paige looked at Toveka “Okay, you look lost and concerned.” Paige observed “What’s going on?” She said gesturing to the sofa.

CMO

Toveka shook her head. “No thank you, and you are fine.”

Something told her anything that went down would just come back up again. And Medical Chief or not, it wasn’t how she wanted the night to progress. She moved to the couch but couldn’t sit. She turned and looked at the woman. The look on her face wasn’t just ‘lost’ it was ‘fear’. “I need a dress.” The words were simple, benign, and still spilled from the poor half Romulan’s lips as if she was begging for her life. Realizing it was probably not enough information, she took a deep breath. Her stoic demeanor, something that was so iron clad on the ship she was teased behind her back as being half Vulcan and not Romulan, was slipping and she was visibly struggling to maintain it. “Lieutenant Commander Tenkiller has asked me to dinner! He said ‘dress and suit but not black tie’.” She swallowed and finished it. “I own two pairs of gym gear. Other than my uniforms, I haven’t had a need to for anything else.”

At this point, her legs betrayed her and she half sat, half collapsed, onto the couch. “I don’t even know where to START!”

Paige listened to Toveka and then let out a laugh “Okay. That we can fix.” She said “I was thinking you were coming to tell me that you were pregnant, didn’t know who the father was and needed help with that.” She said thinking about a conversation she had had with an ensign earlier in the day “Dresses are an easy fix.” She said “So…” She motioned for Toveka to join her at the computer “Let’s see what color are you thinking?” She asked as she took a sip of her coffee.

CMO

The laugh didn’t help any. But at least the woman wasn’t dismissing her out of hand and kicking her out. “I… color? I have no idea…” She moved reluctantly to the chair the Chief pulled up beside the comp with her and shook her head. “I honestly…” She sighed. “I don’t know…”

Paige smiled “OKay. He said formal but not black tie formal.” She said thoughtfully “Okay, let’s go with a light gray....” Paige said as she pulled up dresses “How sexy are you wanting to go? Sexy, but not jump into bed on the first date or slinky?”

CMO

She was glad she wasn’t drinking coffee. Even without something in her stomach, it lurched at the thought of trying to be ‘sexy’. “NO! Not into bed…” she stammered and bit her lip. She covered her face with her hands. “I can’t do this…” She started to rise. “I should call this off. This was a bad idea. I can’t… I don’t know how…” She liked him. She admitted that to herself, though silently, but she hadn’t the foggiest idea how to go about doing anything about it.

Paige grabbed Toveka’s arm “Sit down. You can do this.” She said encouragingly “We’ll find you the perfect dress.” Paige started going through pages and found one that she thought would look amazing on Toveka, the one she found was emerald green though, but they could change the color if needed. The dress was knee length, with a knoted waist and a slit that came up mid thigh, off the shoulders and mid length sleeves that gathered at the top. Paige turned the computer to Toveka “So? Sexy, not slinky, refined yet slightly daring.”

She shook her head. “I… I don’t know. I can’t see myself looking that good in that. I’m gonna look like a fool.”

“Now shoes.” Paige looked at Toveka “Stand up please. How tall is your date?” She asked so that she could judge the height of the heels that were needed.

CMO/ Fashionista

She stood up, holding the back of the chair. “He’s the same height as me, nearly. One inch taller, perhaps.” She glanced at the page on the console before the Doc. “I haven’t worn heels since the Academy. I’m not sure I can even walk in them.” She sat back down again. “Doctor… I don’t know what to do. I haven’t been on a date in so very long. We are going to be together, here on the ship. I don’t want to embarrass the Security Chief.”

About that time Paige’s 4 year old son came into the room “Mommy, the monster is under my bed again.” He said rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand. Paige smiled at Toveka “Let’s get an opinion from a real gentleman. Sammy come here.” She held out her arms for the young boy, with a couple of clicks on the cosole, the dress was now on Toveka’s image “What do you think? Doesn’t she look pretty.” Sammy looked at the picture and at Toveka “She looks beeeautiful..mommy.” He looked at Toveka and gave her a toothy grin “Can you come look under my bed and tell the monster to go away. I’s seen you, you’re secuifty.” He had difficulty with the word security but he looked at Toveka with huge blue eyes “Plllleeeeeeese.”

CMO

Toveka jumped slightly at the sound of the child. Out of habit, her stoic self snapped into place. No one would have thought that moment ago, she was ready to keel over from embarrassment. When the child said she looked beautiful in the pic, she did smile. “Thank you, young Sir. You are very kind.”

When the child asked her to check on the monster under his bed, she widened her eyes in surprise and looked at Paige. “Ummm… I am not security, Little One. I am a scientist. But I can come look if you want. Perhaps I even have a solution for you.” She stood up and put out her hand to the small child. Glancing over her shoulder to Paige, she nodded. “Will you please replicate a small yellow bag, perhaps the size of your hand, please?” She then pointed to the direction the child had come from. “Show me where you think it is, Sammy.” She wasn’t aware that her hard chiseled edges were softening as she spoke and moved with the child.

Paige replicated the requested item as Sammy took her hand “Oh…i sorry…i forgot you was wearing yellow, not red.” Sammy said as he lead Toveka back to his room. “It’s under my bed.” He said “It’s big and purple and he growls.” He said as he opened the door and let Toveka go in and let her go find the monster that his Mommy had been keeping away for a long time.

In the living area, Paige continued to look for shoes that might go with the dress. She wondered what the yellow bag was for, she would have to ask Toveka about it when she came back out. She leaned back in her chair as Toveka walked with Sammy, her entire demeanor changed talking with the small boy.

CMO

Toveka nodded when he pointed to the bed. “Well as a scientist I can tell you the truth. You are a very smart young man, I can tell.” She moved to the foot of the bed with the bag Paige had given her and knelt down. “Now, do you see the monster when the lights are on? Or when we are on station where the sun shines thru the windows?”

She waited for the child to confirm that and showed him the bag. “This bag is just like the sun and the lights. So I am going to set this right here.” She set the bag an arm’s reach under the bed, the open end towards the headboard. “There. Now, if it tries to escape, it will get captured in the bag.” She smiled to the child. “And now…” she pushed the blanket back down over the foot of the bed, “it’s trapped and can’t get out.” She looked to the child to see if she had helped at all.

Sammy smiled “Thank you Miss Toveka!” He looked at her “I see it when the lights are off. Not when it’s light out. ” He said as he jumped back in bed and pulled the blankets up “I think you’ll really look good in that dress.” He said as he closed his eyes and dozed back off.

Paige listened from the living area as Toveka explained what she was doing. She had a very smart little boy and he was just going to get smarter…She looked at the dress and then the pair of shoes that she had found to go with it. She replicated it and had it hanging by the window.

CMO

“The child has gone to sleep. I don’t think he will have monster problems anymore.” She walked back into the living area and paused as she noticed Paige no longer just sitting where she was. And the page behind her on the console had changed, though from this distance, Toveka wasn’t sure what it had changed to.

She glanced around the room in slightly apprehension and that’s when she saw the dress. “That… that’s the dress.” She was suddenly no longer calm and her anxiety rose as she found herself walking towards it. All she saw was bare, or nearly bare, top and less than maximum coverage on legs. She saw the shoes as well. “I don’t know if I can do this. It shows… umm.... everything!” She backed up from the dress like it was some unknown species about to devour her. Her legs bumped the couch and she sat down. “I don’t know if I can do this.” She murmured again.

Kids, science, monsters, those were things she could handle, albeit children usually weren’t her forte. But a dinner, dressed up, with a man she found… intriguing. That was like asking her to perform brain surgery on someone who’s brain wasn’t where it was supposed to be in their anatomy.

Paige smiled “Try it on.” She said pointing to the bathroom just off the main living area “Let’s see how it looks.” She encouraged Toveka.

CMO

Toveka took a deep breath and did as she was told. She came out a few moments later trying to pull up the off the shoulder sleeves, and pulling together the open front. “Doc, seriously? I can’t…” she kept fidgeting and shifting as like the garment was about to fall off her if she didn’t close ‘all’ the gaps. The shoes were on and she wobbled slightly in them while she tugged at the dress, but seemed capable of wearing them without falling over.

CSO

Paige smiled “You look amazing Toveka.” Paige said sincerely as she adjusted the dress to flow the way it should “It’s not going to fall of. I promise.” She said “And he will think you look amazing!” Paige watched as she took wobbly steps “Let your ankles and feet relax, like you are walking normally or you’re going to get shin splints.” Paige offered.
