Nikki was going to reply but the boss answered first. He was quiet, that was for sure.

“Anything big,” unexpectedly said a tall, sharp-looking man in his mid-thirties who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere. He was sporting command red and four solid pips on his collar that quickly gave away his identity. “Sorry to interrupt, but to answer your question, we get ships of all kinds docking here. Federation, Klingon, Romulan, civilian, and so on. Smaller craft like shuttles use the inner ring. I don’t recall meeting you before. I’m Mathias McGarrett, Captain of Outpost 42.”

Nikki stood to the side during the the introduction. Nothing looked wrong out here, but underneath the bulkheads anything could be nibbling at the power cables.

“Oooh, I’ve never seen a Klingon ship!” Benjy squeaked. “Oh, um, yes. Petty Officer Third Class Benjy King Yousefi.” The lad shuffled up to McGarrett and extended his sole hand, his left.

The left-handed hand shake had caught Mathias off-guard, but he did as well with it as he could. A firm, high-quality hand shake is something Mathias had practiced a great deal as he was chasing promotions. To shake someone’s hand and not be able to do it confidently was unusual. But at least he actually had a right arm, which was one of those things in life that completely get taken for granted.

“What, eh.” He cleared his throat. “What can we do for you captain?” Benjy quickly glanced back at Nikki, hoping he hadn’t overstepped his position.

Nikki just shrugged and tipped his head to run with it.

“Walk with me,” said Mathias, as he started walking to the right. “We actually have a Klingon ship, the Khazad’hea, that’s docked here on a regular basis. There’s also a gazillionaire’s yacht that’s a staple on this docking ring, but neither of them are where we’re headed today.”

“Overstepping hack,” Nikki muttered whom the others may or may not have caught.

Mathias turned toward Nikki, not wanting to ignore him. “Lieutenant Brako, I’m expecting we may get an emergency distress call tomorrow sometime, possibly in the morning. I want the Lancer to be able to hit warp 9.3 without any hiccups and the ship has been sitting idle for months. That is why I brought you here.”

“A drill?” he inquired. That would be the most likely explanation for knowing in advance what was happening. His own philosophy was that the best way to control the future was to make it. While some high minded types in the Federation considered that too, most didn’t think that way. To be honest Nikki had not been on the Lancer since coming aboard. He only hoped it was in better shape than the Station. “How far do ye suppose she’ll be stretchin her legs?” he asked. If the boss knew about the distress then he would have an idea of the distance. He added, “Just the engines?” Were they thinking of her getting into a fight?
- Nikki

The young lad looked attentively back and forth between his new superiors as he toddled along between them.

“No, not a drill. I’m just anticipating trouble. It seems to result anytime you say yes to a woman,” curiously quipped Mathias to Nikki.

“Ain’t that the truth, boss,” Nikki murmured quietly.

Benjy involuntarily pulled quite a bemused face in response to Mathias’ comment.

Mathias continued as they kept walking, “We wouldn’t be going far. I had only thought of the engines. But come to think of it I’d want the defensive available if we need them. And the transporters.” He glanced at Benjy before turning back to Nikki. “I imagine Mr. Yousefi isn’t, but how familiar are you with the Lancer?”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

On the one hand the Iotian didn’t like to be caught short, but on the other he hadn’t any cause to dissemble. “I’ve not been on the Lancer, boss. There are regular teams who rotate onto the wee ship fer maintenance and an emergency crew there just in case.” Indeed that had been a noted scheduling ploy for him to schedule the ‘ladies’ to be working on there and out of his hair. To think that ‘all’ of his residual senior people were all women was surely a scheme from hell to torment him. “I know the ship by what she can. Benjy and i will make sure all is in order.”

McGarrett’s glance at Benjy found him nodding an acknowledgement alongside an energetic nod, his frown totally dispersed.

“Excellent,” said Mathias, who was going to say more. But just then someone ahead of them caught his eye.

Ahead of them in the hallway a large figure came into view walking in their direction. Dressed in his black leather layered armour and with his stapled eye patch standing out on his bald head, Khain noted the trio and raised his hand in a pleasant greeting, nodding at Brako as he walked.

“Greetings Starfleet!” his deep voice rumbled in seeming good humour, while his other hand rested on the belt that held the Kut’luch dagger where a pistol would usually be. It wasn’t an aggressive pose at all, by now most people recognized his stance as casually alert. “Fine day for some exercise, it seems?”

Captain Khain of the I.K.S. Khazad’hea

“Well hello, Captain Khain. And it is indeed. I love a good long walk and there’s nowhere on the Outpost you can take a longer one,” responded Mathias in a pleasant tone. He saw no need to voluntarily answer the implied question. “Funny we should run into you. I was just mentioning your fine vessel to Mr. Yousefi here. He’s never been on a Klingon ship.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

“Ah she is indeed a fine ship,” Khain spread his arms in agreement, “the Khazad’hea brings honor to the House of Kholl. She is the only ship of her class you know, one of a kind so far!” Khain stepped to one side, to allow the trio to pass if they wished but his grin was wide. “Mr Yousefi would be welcome to join us on a Pirate hunting expedition one day, as long as he is not squeamish about burying his dagger into the belly of a P’takh raider, of course! Sometimes you simply cannot reason with those kinds of people!”
