The turbolift doors flew open, and James stepped out briskly into the corridor. First impressions are very important, so he definitely wanted to look his best for his new boss, and definitely did not want to be late to report in. He straightened out his uniform and adjusted his hair as he approached the CE’s office door. After wiping the sweat from his brow and taking a moment to compose himself, he pressed the buzzer. “I hope he likes me.” He said under his breath, as he stood up straight, and prepared to enter.

Ensign James Destings (Engineer)

Tyler had a pitcher of coffee and tea out on a side table. She looked at her new transfer info from his personnel file. She heard the ring as she sat up straight at her desk “Come!”

Scott, CE

The door slid open and James nervously stepped through, standing to attention in front of the CE’s desk once he had cleared the door. He cleared his throat before announcing himself. “Ensign Destings reporting for duty, Sir.” A brief smile crept across the Ensign’s face before his face snapped back to attention. Out of the corner of his eye, James saw the pitcher of coffee, and prayed he was offered some. It had been an extremely long trip, and James could of very well fallen asleep any moment.

Ensign James Destings (Engineer)

“Destings have a seat.” Lieutenant Scott didn’t show any emotions. “Can you tell me how to shunt power if primary systems are inoperable?”

Scott CE

“Uhhhhhh…” The ensign sputtered out as he took a seat and started to try and form an answer. Of course he knew how to shunt power, but having had very little sleep, he wasn’t handling being put on the spot the best. “Reroute the power through secondary systems, or divert the power manually?” It was a shaky answer, and James’ face made that clear as day. The real question here was: would his new boss buy it?

Ensign James Destings (Engineer)

“Are you guessing? I need my engineers to make split second decisions because the ship can’t function without us.” This was also a teaching lesson for Destings. Tyler has to be absolutely sure that Starfleet had sent the best to her.

Scott, CE

“Definitely not guessing, sir.” James replied, still a bit shellshocked from the grilling he was getting after having only been on the ship for five minutes. He was definitely guessing, so made an attempt to move the conversation elsewhere. “How long have you been in Starfleet, sir? If you don’t mind me asking?”

Ensign James Destings (Engineer)

Tyler gave him a serious look. “8yrs.” She got up and turned away from her desk to the table. With two pitchers in hand “coffee or tea?”

Scott, CE

The relief was evident on James’ face as he was finally offered a drink. “Coffee please, sir.” He said, as he turned and awaited his new boss to hand him the drink.

Ensign James Destings (Engineering)

She poured out some dark thick coffee from a mug and handed it to Destings. “What’s your story Ensign? Where do you hail from?”

Scott CE

James gratefully took the coffee, took a big sip and breathed a sigh of relief. “I was born on the Martian Colony, sir. But I spent most of my childhood floating around Earth. My father was a researcher for Starfleet Medical so we didn’t spend a lot of time in one place, it’s lucky really that the vast majority of his postings were on Earth.” James took another gulp of coffee before standing up to stretch his legs briefly. “How about you, sir? If you don’t mind me asking?”

Ensign James Destings (Engineer)

“I would tell you about it, but I’d have to lock you in the Brig for a few weeks with this information.” Tyler’s face went to a serious look at Destings.
