Kane spoke up immediately while waving at the porter for another round. “Emergency Medical services are slow to respond. Well, slower than they should be. If we staged EMS kits in secure lockers in specific areas around the ship, Medical wouldn’t have to go to Sickbay to retrieve supplies before responding. It would save minutes on response time.”

Kane, Tac / Med

“Done! Damn good idea. Every second counts. Get with the CMO and make up a list that will be stationed at each locker. I want them standardized so the responders know exactly what is there. Then I want you to spearhead the project. It will be a good bullet on your annual review for promotion.” Chris looked around the table again. “Next.”

Chris

Mwezi thought for a moment. “Perhaps more varied combat training might benefit the crew. And not just the Security crew, but other personell. I think that everyone would benefit from training in self defense and martial arts,” he suggested. It was not so much a problem as it was a possibility for improving something that was already good.

Mwezi

“That’s another good idea. You haven’t been trained in Starfleet hand to hand but you have on your planet. Get with Lt. Stone and try to mix the two and plan on a five day class in Self Defense once every three months. Anything else?”

Chris

Jay normally tried to stay away from social gathering like these, but since he was new to the ship, he thought it would be a good way to get to know some people. Besides, hopefully someone picked up on his Irish-American heritage and managed to have some Guinness on hand. He took one last look in the mirror just to make sure everything looked acceptable. He was not vain by any means, but he did want to look presentable. He felt like the polo and jeans he was wearing would be acceptable. He made his way to the Wardroom and took a deep breath as the doors slid open. Walking in he addressed the group, “Hi everyone. I am Ensign Jay Westland and I was just assigned to the Chernov as the newest member of the medical staff.”

“Greetings Jay! I’m Chris. We don’t use rank in this room. The heavily tattooed gent over there is Solomon or Kane. I call him Kane but he will decide what you call him.” Chris smiled at that knowing Kane just might give this young new guy a scare.

“Over there is Mwezi. He is a.....a....a..I think I’ve been drinking too much rum. I forgot the word, but he is a transfer officer from the planet Galdor. They are interested in joining the Federation so they are testing the waters so to speak. Please have a seat and ask the Porter to get you a drink and meal dish of your choice.” The one eyed man said. He might not know that Chris was the XO since he was new here.

“Have you taken a tour of the ship yet?”

Chris
OOC: Pasting in Wes’s comment

IC: “Thank you Chris.” Jay said as he looked quickly around the room, taking in the surroundings and the others in the room.
“I haven’t had an official tour of the ship yet, but I have managed to find my way around, at east to the important areas. I know where sickbay is, and I know where to sleep, eat, and..use the bathroom.” Jay said trying to make a small joke and see how the others responded.

The wolf-like alien lifted a hand and waved to the newcomer. The best analogy he could give for context to his appearance would be to imagine a Caitian from the prime universe, but based on a wolf instead of a lion.

“Welcome to the Chernov,” he said cheerfully. “My race is called the Laleri, Commander,” he added, grinning at the XO for a moment. “Don’t worry, no matter how drunk I may get, I will not forget that you are called a human.”

Mwezi

OOC: Pasting in Wes’s response
IC: “Thank you for the warm welcome Mwezi, I appreciate it.”
Jay was intrigued by the Laleri and couldn’t wait to talk to Mwezi. Jay loved learning about other cultures and knew that the best way to learn was directly from someone who was a part of that culture. “I look forward to talking with you. I love to learn about other cultures, if you don’t mind sharing.” He nodded to Mwezi in a small show of respect.

Mwezi nodded back in response. “I’m always willing to share about my people, as long as I get to learn about the Federation in return,” he said with a smile.

The first person indicated by Taggart was, indeed, heavily tattooed. His hands were covered, and the part of the forearms exposed by the pushed up sleeves of the grey hooded sweat-shirt (that had seen much better days and not nearly enough washes) were covered in various pictographs and colors, all of varying quality., leaving few small spots of unadorned flesh. The tattoos were again visible on his neck, what could be barely seen through the long hair that fell in an unkempt mass around the man’s head. Glaring eyes peered forth from the mane of hair that fell unnoticed across the man’s face, and a sneer flashed across his lips… or maybe it was a smile, but much too predatory in nature to be seen as friendly to those who had not dealt with the figure. Kane voice rolled out in a low growling manner. “Saw you when you checked in to Medical, newbie. Sit. Let’s see what that liver of yours is made of.” The invitation seemed more like a challenge than an actual welcoming gesture, but it was hard to tell coming from the man.

Kane, Tac / Med

Jay immediately knew what was going on here. He had spent enough time with Marines to know that everyone in the room was watching him to see how he reacted and responded to Kane. What a lot of people probably didn’t know is that people like Kane, are really his kind of people. He preferred dealing with people that knew who they were and didn’t really care what others thought about them and who spoke the honest truth.

“Thank you Solomon.” He said as he took a seat directly across the table from him. “Nice Ink, how long have you been working on it?” he said wondering how he would answer.

Turning toward the Porter Jay said, “I would really like a rare steak the size of my head and a single malt Scotch, neat. Don’t be stingy with the pour, I plan on being here a while.”

Ensign Wes Something, Doctor (Sorry I forgot your characters name.)

Travis

Kane looked at the newcomer and said simply “Never call me that again, and longer than than you would expect.” and then downed his whiskey and motioned the porter for another. He looked at Taggart, then Mwezi, and simply shook his head and gritted his teeth in annoyance.

Kane, Tac / Med

“Well,” thought Jay, “this is going to be an interesting evening.”
“My apologies,” Jay said to Kane lifting his glass. He then quickly downed his Scotch and handed his glass back to the porter. “Do me a favor and make sure this glass stays full as long as I am here tonight.”
What the hell. Either he would pass out and make a fool of himself and become a good funny story for people to tell, or he might just be able to go the distance. Besides it had been a long time since he had drank like that with anyone. It was quite common for him to do it by himself however.

Ensign Jay Westland, Doctor.

Mwezi ordered a drink. “Something strong, surprise me,” he said to the barman, who nodded and got the alien a strong drink. Mwezi tossed back the first few mouthfuls of the drink, then placed it down, blinking slightly. “Whooo! That is strong!”

Mwezi

Chris chuckled at Mwezi. “I got way stronger stuff if you want to try them! Kane and I were practically raised on the white lightning.”

Looking at Wes. “So Wes. This is your first ship but since you went through the Academy, how do you think departments and Command should be run?” He wanted to know if he had any ideas are not.

Chris

OOC: I think you mean Jay.

OOC: Lol! Sorry.

IC: “Well Chris” he started, “this isn’t actually my first ship. I was assigned to a ship right out of The Academy 6 years ago but after only about 8 months I request to be transferred as an doctor embedded in Marine units, and that is where I have been ever since. “

Chris nodded and made a metal note to check all files completely before asking questions.

He continued, “In between being assigned to specific ground units I generally work on staff at a base or back on earth. It hasn’t been unheard of for me to be sent out with three different units over the course of a year.”

“So are you a competent trauma surgeon then?”

He paused to take a quick glance around the room. Everyone always seemed to have a their own idea of what his past meant and what he brought to the table.

“As far as how command and departments should be run, I do have some thoughts on that. In my opinion Starfleet in general, including most ship command staffs, are more worried about doing what is politically acceptable instead of doing what they know to be the right thing. More people need to be ready to do what is right even if it sometimes tries the established or acceptable protocol. “

“Well Kane and I just spent 30 days in the brig for doing what was right....or what we deemed was right. Mwezi would have been right there with us but he was too far away to act or I’m sure there would have been some limbs ripped off of him.” Chris laughed and raised his glass of rum in salute to Kane and Mwezi and then took a swig before continuing. “The Captain will take no bull from anyone but sometimes orders are orders and you must obey. Someone in your rank and position may not get the big picture and ypu might not even be deemed worthy enough of an explanation. Even your department head may not know. Hell, sometimes the Captain and I will not get something explained to us fully. I hope you would be smart enough to know the difference between following orders and doing what is needed or right compared to just blindly following orders?”

“As far as departments go, I am not a fan of being micromanaged and I seem to have see a lot of that in the past. I think that department heads should be focused on taking competent people and exploiting their strengths as a group. I have no time for a lot of people trying to jocky to see who is the best.”

“Well that is ideal. That is the mission and what is strived to be. However, I nor Starfleet can dictate what kind of supervisor a person or being will be. It is up to the person. Learn from not only good supervisors but from bad ones as well. Meaning, I will not act like that when I get to that rank.”

“But the current CMO here was handpicked by me. She is top notch. If she is in your business then there is a reason. Plus as a supervisor you have to make sure your people are following all rules, regulations and procedures. The only way to do that sometimes is to get in your business. Again. I hope you will know the difference.”

“I have only just arrived on the Chernov, so I really don’t know if any of this applies to this ship. So far I have been happy with everything I have seen since coming on board. If you would like to hear more of what I think on the subject, I would be glad to talk to you about it, but i probably need to be a little more sober. “

He sat back and glanced around the room again and motioned an emty glass toward the Porter to let him know he needed another drink.

Jay

“See Jay. I was the CMO here before I got reassigned to command. I know what goes on down there and I keep tabs on it because I may be in charge of this ship, but sickbay is my baby.” Chris downed his rum and asked the porter to bring out his private stock of shine and pour a glass for everyone.

The porter did that plus refilled Jay’s glass.

Chris

“Chris, I understand what you are saying and I know all about the need to follow orders, but I also am not afraid to question orders when they don’t seem to make sense,” he continued, “and I also understand there is a diplomatic and correct way to question orders when you have issues, and I will follow those procedures.”

“Ok. But just remember that there is a time and a place to question those orders. Because if you question me or the Captain about any orders we give, then I’ll tell you that you don’t need to know, you’re not cleared to know, you’re not high enough ranking to know or to just shut the hell up and follow them before I put you in the brig for insubordination. Asking questions is fine and dandy but you also need to know your place here. I’m starting to see why you were in three Marine units in a given year and not one.”

“As far as my surgical skills go, I am certified in both trauma and general surgery. As you can guess through previous assignments I have had more than my fair share of practice when it comes to trauma surgery and would say I am more than just competent.” Jay paused for a moment and if he was suddenly in deep thought. He had seen enough of the last 5 years. Quite frankly he had seen thing that would make a Billy Goat puke and he was looking forward to actually getting back to general medicine.

“That I’m glad to hear. Because Kane was the only great trauma surgeon we had. I’m good at it and so is the Captain…oh yea. I forgot to tell you. The Captain was a doctor as well. The current CMO is good at it to but Kane here has had loads of experience. Surpassing my own. See we can default to others that have superior skill. This is a battleship Jay. Pure and simple. You will see some of the same things as you saw on the field. We have already been attacked a few times before and sustained a larger number of casualties than was acceptable.”

Looking up he started again, “I am very impressed with Dr. T’Aria . She is very good at her job and I can see that she runs a tight department. I am looking forward to getting know the whole medical staff a lot better over the next few days.”

Jay

“And that’s great to hear.” He picked up the shot of white lightning and raised it up for a toast. “Gentlemen. If you’d join me, I would like to purpose a toast. A toast to the greatest ship and crew in the whole of the fleet!” With that he downed the glass and slammed it upside down onto the table.

Chris

“There it is,” Jay said to himself. It never fails.

It was clear that Chris was starting to think that Jay had an attitude problem as pretty much everyone does when they ask him these kinds of questions. Sure he had opinions, but he knew the importance of following orders and what could and could not be questioned. It didn’t help that he had been attached to so many units while working with the Marine units. At first glance his record looked like someone was playing “Lets move the problem from unit to unit so I don’t have to deal with it” but closed inspection always revealed what was really going on.

Jay was always placed with units that were either in, or going into situations where large numbers of casualties were expected. He was with front line troops during big offensives maneuvers. He was with troops that were grossly undermanned and out gunned. He and the others doctors in the same program were kind of like the all star team that was sent in when thing were really bad and then rotated out or to another unit that needed them, but understood all to well how it could look.

“So,” he thought again to himself, “do I try to explain it now or later if asked? Hell, I’ll just let it go for now.” With that he raised his glass with all of the others

Jay.
