The evening had proven to be long, patients flowing in an out like molasses scaling a hill.. In the middle of the summer heat. To most officers, this was the most unforgiving time of the evening, where the work was slow and time was slower. Although, for T’Aria, it made no difference whether it was 0300 or 1500, it was all the same to her, in the black-and-white world she seemed famed for living in, even if that weren’t the truth. For her, this was the calmer time of her shift, where pestering officers were not claiming illness to get out of their own shifts, nor were they whining consistently about their injuries, especially since most of their patients in rehabilitation were fast asleep.

Situated behind her desk, T’Aria was doing research on treating a Caitian patient. One of the NEs from the previous shift had come in with cardiac issues, after suffering a heart attack just a week before. She knew the Caitian people were incredibly suspectible to diseases and malfunctions of the heart, due to their weak, underdeveloped immune systems. However, T’Aria was doing her damndest to avoid having to make any changes to the muscle itself, understanding the initial weakness of their bodies, to begin with.

Occasionally glancing at the monitors upon the wall behind her, in order to get an overview of what was happening outside of her office, she kept an ear out for any need of assistance. Although, she trusted her doctors and nurses to be able to handle the simplicity of the evening. Returning to her research, T’Aria reached over to grasp her glass of Vulcan tea, taking a short sip of it. Setting it down, she momentarily fell into a state of motionlessness, her gaze travelling back to the patient’s file and injury report, where she returned to cross referencing the report with previous medical examinations from opposing patients, in search of similarity.

Slowly, but surely, she was forming a thesis.

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

Chris was wide awake and he had been for hours. He woke up four hours before his alarm went off for his 3rd shift bridge duty. He didn’t know why. He wasn’t having nightmares that week anyway, and his stress level has been down. He decided to take a shower and get dressed and head over to sickbay. He hasn’t been there in awhile and decided to check in to see how his successor was doing. Not that she needed any help; she was very capable and that is why he personally chose her over the others.

He went to the lift and said “Sickbay ” and it took him to the floor and he got off and entered the bay. She has changed up the place and he thought it was too better streamline the process. Seeing her in her office he went over and pressed the chime.

Commander Chris Taggart, XO

“Hmm.. Fascinating.” T’Aria hummed as she read over a previous datafile from a patient akin to the one she was endevaouring to treat. Pulling up her patient’s file, she quickly glanced over it, comparing and contrasting the two for any similarities that might give her the answers she was looking for. The answer to his condition were within her grasp, just inches beyond her reach.. But the enigma of journey remained: had she chosen the right path to finding a cure? This question would be the sole factor in determining how long it would take to get the Ensign the help he needed.

The chime. She had not been anticipating any visitors throughout the evening, at least, not that she could recall. Out of caution, she took a brisk glance to the side of her monitor, concluding it was still her shift, and time had not yet made a fool of the young Vulcan. Admittedly taken off guard, she rose her head to the door. “Come in.” Unlike most others, her voice did not echo, it did not carry the same weight nor prominence; it was much softer, quieter– to be expected of a canonically expressionless creature.

Dr. T’Aria

Chris heard her say come in and he did. Stopping in front of the chair that her underlings and patients set he he smiled at her. “Forgive the intrusion at this late hour. But I’d thought I’d stop by and see how you’re doing and just chat until my shift starts. That is unless , of course you’re busy?”

Chris saw the copious amounts of PaDDs on her desk and the computer on.

Chris

“It is quite all right, Commander. Your intrusion is not unwelcome. Please, have a seat, should you wish.” Gesturing with a petite hand towards the chair across from her, she nodded. “Very well. Do you wish anything to drink, sir?” Rising to her feet, she stood, awaiting his response. “I was merely endeavouring to find a cure for one of my Caitian patients, who is experiencing premature heart problems.” She explained, briefly, catching his glance.

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

“Thank you and thank you again. ” as he took a seat. “Hot chocolate please. ” He listened to her talk about her patient. “Hmm. Those fourballs do have problems with their hearts quite a bit. It is not uncommon to have them in later years but if they are on this ship then they are young enough to not have them. So he or she really has a big problem. I’ll help you with anything you need and remember the Captain is a doctor as well. But if we can’t find something for them then my reaction would be to transfer this caitlin to a space station or back to Earth so they will have access to better facilities and not cause a problem on this ship. This is a battleship and it needs healthy people to be able to withstand what is thrown at it. I wonder how he or she passed the physical art the Academy with something like this?”

“This man boarded the ship only a few months prior to my arrival to the Chernov, two and a half years ago. At the time, he was no noted to have any pre-existing heart conditions; apparently quite healthy at the given time of the physical. Over time, however, it appeared the condition had begun to show where it had not, before. It, in the several scans conducted over his person, appears to be heart disease. It is treatable, yes, but generally this condition is treated by the replacement of the muscle; I find this patient is much too young to sustain such an invasive surgery, to have his heart replaced by a machine. If you or the Captain have any suggestions, please offer them to us. I have an idea, but I am uncertain of how successful it will be.” A Vulcan admitting their own uncertainty was quite uncommon, but T’Aria was candid as it came. “Of course, sir.”

“That is interesting.” Chris said as he put his hand up to face in a thinking pose. “Whatever it is, it is fast acting. Send me what you got and I’ll look at it on shift tonight and do some research on it. That is unless we are attacked or run into something neat, unusual or deadly. Then I’ll give it to the Captain at shift change and see if he can find something out. We’ll let you know.

“They have been sent,” T’Aria remarked, after tapping a series of commands into the console behind her, turning back to the man.

He took the drink and took a sip. “Nice. “

Chris

“I am pleased,” She took a seat across from him, once setting his drink before him, having retrieved another mug of tea, for herself. “I trust you have been well, commander?”

Dr. T’Aria

“I have been. Nightmares are getting less frequent and my pulled tooth has stopped hurting. I’m taking a command level course over the computer right now and that’s taking up my free time until I complete it. Have you been well Lieutenant?”

Chris

“Have you been taking any medication for the nightmares, or the pain? And if so, how has it been working for you, sir?” T’Aria inquired, leaning forwards while maintaining a straight posture. “May your studies be prosperous, Commander.”

“I have. For both. The dentist will put in a new tooth and I take meds for nightmares and I see a psychologist for it as well. “

“Very well. If you need anything more, Commander, you know where my office is.”

“Yes. Thank you. “

“Well,” T’Aria spoke vaguely. She was an enigma who did not fancy giving away her internal thoughts.

Dr. T’Aria

Chris let it a small chuckle. “Well… what?”

Chris

“I have been well, sir.” She debated speaking more on that matter, and she visibly hesitated, but she could not bring herself to speak freely, for that would include emotions. “The sickbay has been stocked well; my doctors are working efficiently. Quite impressive, actually, sir.”

T’Aria

He laughed a bit more. “Well. I guess that’s the best I’m going to get from you. I’m glad that they are working very well. It makes me feel better. But I have one thing more to ask. Feel free not to answer if you don’t want to. But do Vulcans release any emotion.... at all? I’ve read some things in school about it, but wanted to hear from the horses mouth so to speak.”

Chris

T’Aria’s eyebrow foretold her surprise at the question, before she spoke. However, it was the only indication he would be given, until she spoke. “Yes. Vulcans are heavily emotional creatures, contrary to popular belief, we experience vibrant and forceful emotional responses to the world around us. However, we train from the moment we turn seven, if not earlier in our childhood, to purge ourselves of those tantalizing emotions. Albeit, to answer your question: yes.” She paused, “If a Vulcan is compromised, they will be apt to show more emotion. If they feel too strongly to withstand their own control, they will show their emotions. There are a number of reasons to explain the use of emotions. With that being said, if you are questioning whether or not we use them freely, the universal answer would be no. With that being said, for people in my generation, there is a greater chance you will see one of us express emotion, due to our lack of connection to our home world and the incompletion of our Kolinahr rituals.”

Dr. T’Aria

Chris listened carefully. “I see. I guess I don’t understand fully so forgive the follow up questions. “I understand about not completing your Kolinahr…I think and hope I said that correctly, but not to have a connection to your homeworld is what I don’t understand. Many species leave their homeworld and still continue their beliefs. Is there some mystic or cosmic connection that you gain like through osmosis from your planet’s atmosphere or sun?”

Chris

“Vulcans have a difficult time accepting beliefs which they cannot prove in science.” T’Aria began, a bit blandly. “With that being said, Vulcans do believe in a single fact which combines us all,” She informed, briefly considering her own response. “This belief rests in what we call the Katra; the essence of life. My society believes, once we die, our knowledge is dispersed into the universe. However, all that we are, our soul if you would, is stored within the Katra. In older times, this Katra would be transferred to another prior to death, so they could carry our essence to Mount Seleya to rest at peace. However, after the destruction of Vulcan, I am uncertain where our minds will find peace after death.” The thought seemed almost to sadden her.

Dr. T’Aria

“So you believe in the Force.. A essence that binds us all and full of knowledge. This religion of sorts of yours is similar to that of 20th century Earth. The millenials were a force to be reckoned with. They looked at all the old ways of doing things, traditions, and even religions and discarded them to establish something of their own. There were people before that that questioned religion and they were called atheists. They shunned all forms of religion because none of it could be proven but by science. Science started to prevail but very slowly and religion declined. That process was stopped up by the mellienial movement. Mainly because they and other atheist said religion was what was holding science and space exploration back. Once science prevailed, we were put on the fast track to the stars and here we are now. “

“I guess what I’m trying to say is that before your mountain just like the last god of earth and their heaven.... there were countless millions who died before those ever became a tradition, or brought into existence. So either what did your people do before they were brought to the mountain? Those people found peace after death, just like Earths people before heaven and countless millions who worshipped other gods and even those atheists who died believing that they came from star matter and will return to star matter. Either find something new or stop crying over something that none of you all could have prevented. What’s done is done. In old Earth saying is, S#!t or get off the pot. Be a beacon of hope for your people. Be a leader.
Think about it long and hard, you’ll find an answer. After all, you people had the best science Academy in the universe. I want you to take all next week off and devote your time to this. I can see that this is very important to you ans you’re people. And after you’re done and want a transfer or a sabbatical, then I’ll grant you one. Ok. T’Aria. Ok. “

Chris smiled warmly at her and reached over and gently squeezed her hand.

Chris

OOC: I feel like that would be an interesting side sim; sending a small group of people to Vulcan to check up on them, or try and help with continuing the rebuilding of their culture.

OOC: Write up a side SIM for the future! It would be great to read! Maybe the Captain and you can tag team.

IC: For a moment, she could only stare at him. What exactly was he talking about? It briefly perplexed her, leaving her in silence to try and understand where this had all come from. Vulcans were not particularly foretelling creatures, their emotional intelligence about the equivalent of a rock, despite possesing tempestuous cores. “Just as the Terran people, my people have exeprienced vast changes in their religious beliefs; their practices and rituals altered at the pique of Surak’s leadership. Those beliefs still walk beside us, our practices and rituals unbroken by the destruction of our planet. However, as any people forced to rebuild their entire society, there is conflict; a tedious path which my people have been forced to walk.” She paused, “You are correct, the weight of Vulcan may be heavy on our shoulders, but it need not be our dictator. Although, a person must believe it, themselves, for such a thought to be effective.”

“I do not believe Vulcan needs a.. ‘beacon of hope,’” She began, viewing his words with great consideration. “Albeit, they do need leaders in these perilous times, and they have begun to find them, once more, in our high council. These days are still fragile, and New Vulcan is still picking up the pieces of its predecessor’s destruction, but they will eventually grow to become strong again. My people are insufferable to much of the Federation, however, they are not weak.” She took a second, wondering what to say about his request. Take a week off? Surely he knew a CMO couldn’t just up and take an entire week off. “Sir, I appreciate your offer, and it holds great value, but I have my doctors and nurses to command. They are fully capable of handling themselves, but my place is with them, as their leader. I cannot mold Vulcan into what it once was, but I can lead my staff, regardless of their race. Perhaps that is greater a cause to your wisdom, than heading back to New Vulcan.”

His hand brushing her own, send a shiver through her body. She was not used to being touched, many knowing better than to bother touching a Vulcan. It surprised her, and she fought the urge to recoil in discomfort, her exterior remaining stoic. Understanding it was a human expression, she glance down at their hands, offering only a gentle gaze in acknowledgement to his care. “Thank you, sir.” She nodded to the man she had considered a mentor, since the beginning.

Dr. T’Aria

Seeing her reaction, which to a normal person would be nothing, but since he knew her he removed his hand slowly. “I understand what you are saying. But Department Heads take vacations all the time. You’re do for one. But again, I understand. Just keep it mind. ” He glanced at the wall clock. “I got to be going soon. “
