It wasn’t a particularly busy day, but even when the day was quiet and not busy, Mwezi still enjoyed getting to his quarters in the evening and relaxing. Today was no different, and after changing out of his uniform, Mwezi laid back on his bed, back against the wall, with a book and began to read. It was a nice enough novel, and carried him into bedtime. He sighed lightly and put the book away, slipping off the bed and grabbing a small incense stick. Lighting the small stick with a match, he blew out the match and closed his eyes, crossing his legs in front of himself. “Mother of Wisdom. Thanks for the protection. Please continue to guide this ship to smooth waters,” he spoke, then snuffed the fragrance stick and went to bed.

When Mwezi awoke, it was to what seemed to be dawn-light shining in through his window. Of course it wasn’t actual sunlight, since the other side of that window was a portal to cold vacuum of outer space, but during his visit home, he had borrowed a holographic projector that was able to simulate a static environment with small changes such as the level of light. It had taken him a few weeks, but he had been able to install it over his window so that it showed the view from his childhood home, with the timing calibrated to his schedule. Sunlight streamed in from the holographic window, shining on his pillow. This way, he got somewhat of a regular day-night cycle. He groaned slightly and turned over, letting the virtual warmth filter over him for a few moments before he pushed against the bed to lift up his body and sit up.

“Time for another day,” he muttered quietly to himself, glancing at the photograph of Kula on his desk. His paw reached out to lift it up, and he held it to his chest for a few moments. “I miss you already,” he murmured softly, closing his eyes for a few moments before taking a deep breath and putting the photo down again. It had been so nice to be surrounded by love and care once more, and coming back to the Chernov was just a little bit more lonely now.
