Kane kept an eye on the two patients, but placed a hand on T’Aria’s elbow and nudged her away from the assemblage. Palming the hypo, he showed her the dosage indicator… Normal Saline. He looked past her at the XO and said very softly “I think the Commander is trying to make a point, Doc. Now, normally even I wouldn’t pull a stunt like that… but if you look at our problem children over there -” and he indicated Daniels and Jackson “- they are actually paying attention now. And the medical team is actually moving and getting things done. I say we simply make sure that you and I are the ones giving meds and we continue the ‘drill’.” and he looked at her and added “That is of course, up to you. But it seems to be working, Doc.”

Kane, Tac / Med

In any case, T’Aria wasn’t the kind of woman to support a lie. Although, not even she could find any logical reason to stop this ‘drill’ when the medical team was responding at peak efficiency “You’re right; keep it running,” She agreed, glancing over at their troublesome crewmen, who lay back, wide-eyed and in fear of their lives from a pretend pathogen. It was only a matter of time before someone realised neither of the supposed ‘paitients’ were infected, but until those labs were taken and analysed, they were in the clear. Then, an idea struck. “Handle the medication dosages. I am going to run the ‘labs’ myself, excuse me.” Gently brushing past him, T’Aria went to retrieve samples from both individuals.

Kane responded “You got it, Doc.” And he looked at the attending staff. “Well? You heard the lady! Methylprednisolone! 8 meg hypo. Prep that while I gown up to go in the isolation area. And have 1600 mg of ibuprofen on standby in case of inflammation! And somebody find me a ^%$*#@ hair tie!” he yelled as he brushed his hair back and put on a gown.

Kane, Tac / Med

Chris sat there still acting and looking very much in disbelief. He had that 1000 yard stare on his face. He did notice that Kane figured out that he pulled a switcheroo! Wizards first rule. People will believe in anything if you make it look like it was real. He smiled inwardly. He couldn’t fool Kane and T’Aria would have seem it to if she was holding the hypos. He saw that they were actually playing along. And continued to do his part in keeping the charade up.

Commander Chris Taggart XO

T’Aria gowned up, with the help of a Denobulan nurse. Retrieving two vials, she headed into the isolation bay, where those poor officers remained under quarantine. “Lay back, I am going to retrieve blood samples.” She ordered them, watching Daniels out of the corner of her eye as she turned to Jackson. Rolling Jackson’s sleeve up, she gathered a clean sample of the woman’s “contaminated” blood.

Cheyenne Jackson, a young, naive Nurse from the Lunar Colony lay, wide eyed and close to tears. “Doctor..” Her voice quivered, although T’Aria gave no response beyond a soft ‘Yes?’. “Are we gonna be okay?”

“We will do our best to treat your ailment, Nurse.” T’Aria responded, setting the vial on the table beside her. “Do not feel sorry for yourself, Miss Jackson. Perhaps it would be wise to take this experience seriously, and realise just how detrimental laziness and lack of attention can be.” Once satisfied by the amount of blood drawn, she stood up. “Get some rest, Ensign.” She got up and went to get Daniel’s samples, so Kane could deal with Jackson’s meds.

T’Aria
CMO

Kane was not known for his bedside manner. Gowning up and walking into the isolation field, he approached Jackson; who already had the unfortunate position of being on the tattooed PA’s bad side. “Ok Jackson!” he said loudly and with far too much joy in his tone. “Let’s see if we can keep you from bleeding out of your eyes and backside, shall we?” he said with an almost giddy tenor to his voice, accentuating the joy with a loud clap of his gloved hands. It was one of the rare times that Kane’s eyes could be seen clearly; his hair being neatly tucked away under a cap and his mouth and nose covered by a surgical mask. “Oh, and don’t worry. Unlike you… I know what the &^%$ I’m doing.” he added disparagingly. Twisting the dial on the hypo, he pressed the device to the man’s neck and said “Ok, step one. If you experience any side effects… you know… aches, pains, abdominal cramping, blurred vision or blindness, deafness, hearing rushing water, incontinence… just let us know.” and then he paused as if a thought struck him and he looked down at Jackson. “Well, I guess we’d all know on that one, eh? Eh?” he said like he was making the funniest joke ever. When Jackson merely stared wide-eyed at him in fear, Kane said “Well, hell. That was comedy gold, Jackson. Don’t let your sense of humor die, too.” and he spun around and walked away. “Let’s prep the IV lines and get ready for the next round, folks!”

Kane, Tac / Med

T’Aria subtly listened as Kane barked orders at their staff, holding strong to the facade they were playing. As if soldiers under the scrutiny of their commander, T’Aria could hear the staff bustling about, tripping over themselves to fulfill his tasks during this detrimental situation. Standing over Daniels, a medical tricorder in her hands, she assumed a somewhat ‘concerned’ look. “It appears your temperature has risen, Crewman.” She hummed, glancing over the head of the tricorder to meet Daniel’s eye. “Are you experiencing any fatigue, cramping, cephalgia or nausea?” T’Aria tilted her head, watching as Daniels quickly shook his head in fear. “Curious,” she set the tricorder down, reaching over to gently press her fingers to the lymph nodes in his neck. “Your lymph nodes are slightly swollen, which is a sign of the Y. Pestis’ attack on your cells.” She explained, ignoring his reaction. Quickly retrieving a sample of blood, she looked over Daniels. “I will return once the analysis is complete. Until then, do attempt to rest, stress will only cause you harm. Goodday, Crewman.” She recorded the new symptoms on the PaDD beside his bed, so Kane could use them, should he need to. Gathering her supplies, she shot one last look at Jackson before retreating from the isolation bay.

Dr. T’Aria

Kane kept his expression it’s typical surly one, but internally he was laughing. T’Aria was actually going along with it! Not even going along. Participating! He shook his head, glad the surgical mask covered his smile. “That woman, I swear…” he thought to himself. He then looked at Jackson. “Ok. Gotta get a blood sample for the Doc. Hold still.” and he pressed the device to the man’s neck and drew the sample. Ejecting the cartridge, he put it in a specimin basin and handed it to the nurse. “Get that to the Doc, will ya?” and then he bent low at the waist and placed his hands flat on the side of the biobed Jackson was laying on. Shaking his head in a kind of resignation, he said “Man. I am jealous of you right now, Jackson. I mean, you were just absolutely assaulted by a superior officer. You know what kind of compensation you are gonna get for that? Loads, my man. Loads.” and then he shrugged, his eyes scrunching up as he smiled yet again under his mask… but this smile was the predatory one. “Well, you may get, at any rate. Gotta make sure you don’t f&^%ing die first, right?” and he jerked himself upright and said “Let’s get some ice chips in here.” and he looked at the two ‘patients’. “Small comfort, but we can try to make your last few hours comfy, amIright?”

Kane, Tac / Med

“Sure thing, Lieutenant!” Braxton, an older nurse plagued by greying hair, pipped up. “All right, out of the way!” He startled idle nurses from their haze of contemplation, “J’Inta, go get Jackson and Daniels a cup of ice, each. Make sure they’re large enough pieces that they can suck on them and won’t choke.” He wasn’t sure how people managed to choke on frozen water, but he’d seen it before. “Doctor Talis, do you mind aiding Kane until I get back? Kinda gotta run and get these samples to the Chief.” He hurriedly explained to an Ensign doctor who assisted in stripping him of the contamination suit. “Thanks, man.” He clapped her shoulders, the vial nestled in the crook of his thumb.

  • Nurse Braxton

Jackson’s brow was furrowed, sweat beginning to pool at its base, a product of anxiety that could easily convince waygoing nurses or doctors of her feigned fever. Kane’s reassurances managed only to push her further to the edge, a lump growing in her throat. Every part of her wanted to burst into tears as if depleting herself of valuable water was going to solve the problem. Fear fueled her expression, apprehension for her imminent death a weight upon her chest she couldn’t handle.

“You’re an ass, Kane.” Daniels spat, his anxieties manifesting themselves into a bitter attitude. I’m sure you’re more than happy to watch us die, aren’t you?” He hissed, dark eyes alight with anger which failed to mask the fear accumulating beneath. At Jackson’s quiet attempt to calm him, he exploded. “No! Come on, Cheyenne, don’t be such a wimp! You and me both know ‘Doctor’ Kane is enjoying our suffering.” His glare stretched the short span of the bay, staring directly at Solomon. “Just look at him! I’m sure he’s hiding a smile of accomplishment beneath that mask.” He egged.

  • Jackson and Daniels
    The Anxious and the Idiot

Meanwhile, situated in an offshoot laboratory, yards away from the action, T’Aria was hunched over a device, feeding in the blood samples retrieved from the sickbay’s newest editions to the isolation ward. Having rid the room of Braxton’s ignorance merely minutes before, she worked on feigning the results of the blood tests, a trick hardly difficult to replicate. Why am I doing this? The question appeared in the midst of her standby. It was a funny little query begging her attention, but she had no answer to offer it. She’d probably blame it on Kane, in her own denial of the satisfaction that came of giving Daniels and Jackson a taste of their own medicine. He, after all, was a very persuasive man. Shaking her head, the ping of the machine notifying her of its completion, she dismissed the subject. Slowly picking up the PaDD, she reviewed its supposed results, pleased to find they came back ‘positive’ for the Y. Pestis bacteria. It seemed a little bit of tinkering could go a long way.

  • T’Aria
    The Mischevious Vulcan

Kane looked at Daniels and said through his mask “It’s actually Physician’s Assistant Kane, Mister Daniels. And you don’t have to speculate. I am so very much enjoying this. You both are crap medical professionals, crap crew mates, and overall crap people.” and he leaned in close to Daniels. “But if you for one minute think that my personal pleasure in seeing you suffer will in anyway lessen the work I do to make sure that you both don’t &^%king die, you are sorely mistaken.” and he stood up and looked at them both. “In fact, I have a bet for each of you. I bet you both that this team -” and he waved his hands around to indicate the crew that was actually doing their jobs “- is so good that we save both of you. If we do, you both agree to remedial medical training conducted by me and the CMO. If you fail that training, you resign from Star Fleet. If we can’t, I will put in writing right now that I will resign my commission and transfer whatever property I have to your estates to be disseminated as your directions indicate.” and looked back and forth between the two. “What do you say? You think I can save you? If you do, that means you won’t take the bet. That also means you both know I am damn good at my job and you should have been paying attention and doing what you were told. If you do take the bet, that means you think I’m crap at this and if that’s the case you have no shot anyway, so nothing to lose. So what’s it gonna be?”

Kane, Tac / Med

“We’ll take it!” Daniels seethed, an expression of anger and mockery corrupting his pale face. He did not think twice about his decision. Regardless of the consequences, he would take the bet as Daniels was a man of presumptuous nature. The Plague was long behind them, an epidemic of ancient history; he doubted they had a cure. “Anything to watch you resign.”

“Speak for yourself, Keith.” Jackson retorted. She wasn’t about to risk her career on some bet because two men despised each other, one of them being the largest idiot ever birthed. “You can take that bet if you want to, but you know you’re not going to survive remedial medicine with him or the CMO. They’ll grind you down into a pulp and spit you out before the first hour is done– have you met them!?” She turned her head to Kane, “Thank you for helping us–!” Words spewed from her lips like a rocket knocked off its course.

“You can thank us when you are healed,” T’Aria stepped into the room, a PaDD held beneath the crook of her left arm. “Until then, it would be illogical to waste your energy on such mundane concepts, Ms. Jackson.” She paused, “By the appearance of your labs, it does not seem you will have much energy to exert.” She informed, transferring the information to the PaDD closest to Kane, so he could view the ‘results,’ and make any changes he saw fit. “You both are positive for the Y. Pestis bacteria, and judging by the remainder of your labs, it is a wonder neither of you have swollen buboes appearing across your body– a new variant of the disease, perhaps?” She shook her head, “We will be taking blood cultures once every thirty minutes to monitor any changes in blood count, iron, CRP and leukocyte levels. Due to the presence of Y. Pestis in your bloodstream, it is logical to conclude you have been infected with the bubonic plague. Further testing done on your lung will determine whether this is true or you possess the pneumonic plague.” She glanced at Kane, “Anything to add?”
“Have they yet received their medication?”

  • Daniels, Jackson, and T’Aria

Kane held up a finger to the CMO as he made notes on a separate PaDD. “Here you go.” and he held it out to Daniels. On it was the written agreement as he had said. He then looked at Jackson. “Finally thinking for yourself are you, Jackson? Hmm. Must be the plague.” and he looked at T’Aria. “And they say nothing good comes from the Black Death.” He then looked at the ‘lab reports’. A furrow crossed his features, partially hidden by the hair. “Doc, look here.” and he pointed at a mostly blank page. On it were two words he had typed out. ‘Dinner tonight?’ He then said “If their white blood cell counts go any lower, we are gonna have to think about secondary infections of pulmonary and respiratory systems.”

Kane, Tac / Med

“The Plague has been known to cause curious side effects, although ‘free will’ was never on the list at the Academy.” T’Aria glanced over, raising an eyebrow to feign concern. “We have them on a corticosteroid, once that is administered, it should encourage the production of white blood cells. With that being said, we should run continuous scans on the pulmonary and respiratory systems, in case viral infection develops.” She agreed, pausing to read over the results. With a nod, meant hardly for anything to do with the patients, she turned to their patients. “For now, while we run further scans, I suggest you two attempt to rest. These are the initial stages of the plague. Do not expect to remain with manageable symptoms.” She explained, promptly stepping back. “P.A., a word alone?” She gestured to the entrance of the bay.

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

Kane nodded once and then looked at Jackson and Daniels. “You two wait here. I’ll be back. Try not to do anything too strenuous. You know… run, swim, make-out.... die. All those would be inadvisable. Well, the last one would save me a hell of a lot of time, but the paper work… it’s a killer.” he said, his tone sarcastic and his demeanor infuriating.

Following the CMO he walked away and said “What ya got, Doc?”

Kane, Tac / Med

“How long are we going to feign the plague?” T’Aria gestured to the officers bustling beyond them, “They have proven their competence in the medical field; response times were ideal, treatment prompt and accurate; but both could use work. As for Mr. Daniels and Ms. Jackson, you have managed to disturb their sense of security. Daniels, I doubt, will outgrow his arrogance. Nor Jackson, similarly, her timid subservience. I do believe we will soon begin to outlast the usefulness and practicality of this charade.” She shook her head, “They both should be subject to remedial medical training and professional review. Should they fail to pass either assessment, their service aboard this vessel will be terminated. I do not have room for incompetence in my staff.” She tapered off, leaving it open-ended, despite the lack of suggestion in her words.

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

Kane made sure his back was to the staff and grinned the trademark predatory grin of his. “But it was just getting fun!” and he chuckled very softly. Sighing, he said “But I hear ya, Doc. If you will allow me? I’ll get this over and done with. If you do it, you may get reprimanded. And that’s my department, Doc.” he said with a wink.

“Please,” T’Aria nodded, gesturing past Kane.

Turning back to the isolation bay, he walked over and looked at Daniels and Jackson. Putting on his most serious look and slowly shaking his head, he said “Everyone stop. Just… stop. Daniels. Jackson. I’m sorry. There is nothing else we can do. All we can do now is take you out of isolation and make the next few weeks a living hell for you.” He waited a moment as the confused looks spread around the Section. Once he was sure that everyone was sufficiently paying attention, he said =/\= Computer. End lock down on my command and cease simulation. Send all activity related to Mass Casualty Infectious Disease Outbreak Simulation to the CMO’s office for review. =/\= a moment later the computer chirped back =/\= Simulation canceled. Lockdown lifted. =/\=

Jackson stared in disbelief, but Daniels began to sputter in rage. Kane looked at him through strands of hair and simply said “Don’t even f&^%ing think about it. I will break you down shotgun-style. And you know it.” A moment passed and the redness in Daniels’ face began to subside slightly. “I am gonna file harassment charges against you and every officer on this ship!” he said, spittle flying form his lips. For her part, Jackson simply stared at the floor. Kane looked at her then back to Daniels. “Go ahead. It’s ‘Kane’… with a ‘K’. But before you go off filing paperwork and charges and crying all boo-hoo they hurt my feelings you need to remember two things. First, you brought this on yourself by under-performing during an announced MCI drill. That right there is grounds for the Doc to bounce you off the ship. Second, you made me a bet. And it’s recorded. And you didn’t die, and the rest of the team did their jobs. So… you have remedial medical training conducted by me and the Chief. And you have to pass or you resign.” and he leaned in a bit conspiratorially, but stage-whispered loud enough to be heard by anyone trying to listen. “Oh, and there is the fact that you actually believed the Executive Officer of a Star Fleet vessel would knowingly and intentionally infect members of his own crew with a virulent disease that we don’t keep samples of on board. Had you done the inventory like you both were supposed to have done, you’d know this.” and he leaned back again. “So go ahead and file your charges. Let’s see who gets what when the dust settles.”

Kane, Tac / Med

His mouth hung open, the words dying on his tongue, Daniels found himself at a loss. A deep glare, stealing from the burning red of his cheeks, settled into his expression. Murmurs among the staff cracked at the integrity of the newfound silence, officers whispering in low voices to avoid the wrath Daniels had faced. A flurry of surprise, amusement and bashfulness shattered the tensions of the sickbay, an overall feeling of relief assuming the once impregnable stress blanketing them all. Although merely a simulation, it had felt real, and to many a sonic shower never seemed more inviting.

“Return to work!” T’Aria’s voice put a blade to the brief relief. “Reports, inventory, labs, system inspections, examinations and pre-scheduled appointments– Simply because we had a drill does not mean your shift is over. Once those restrictions are lifted from the sickbay, we will return to our steady stream of patients.” She shooed the idle officers back onto the floor, “Each of you are required to submit a reflection of your work today. I expect it sent in by 0900 hours tomorrow; none of you are excused!”

“As for you two,” T’Aria turned to Daniels and Jackson, “As P.A. Kane previously explained, you will both attend remidial training beginning tomorrow at 0700 hours. Should you choose not to show up, you will be reprimanded, removed from my staff and returned to Earth. I trust you will make an educated decision.” She eyed Daniels specifically, her pale gaze harsh in its glare. “Until then, you are excused to your quarters. I expect your reflections on my desk by the end of Alpha shift, without complaint. Dismissed.” Scrambling from their beds, the pair was quick to relieve themselves of the isolation bay, where T’Aria could figured they hoped never to return. “I assumed you could use relief of them for the remainder of the shift.” She remarked, once they were out of earshot.

“I could use relief of Daniels permanently. Jackson is ok, just too damn timid.”

“If his arrogance continues to cloud his judgement and ability to practice, your wish may come true.” T’Aria shook her head. “If Ms. Jackson had a solid exterior, her efficiency would improve. Her pusillanimous nature restrains her–perhaps it would be better to approach her training with a behavioral focus–by encouraging confidence and precision, there is a high likelihood she would improve as a nurse.”

Hands falling from their clasp, T’Aria went to leave the bay, pausing before she had the chance to cross through the field. “Regarding dinner,” She began, her back turned slightly to Kane. Tilting her head, she glanced over her shoulder. “What do you have in mind?”

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

“Privacy. Wine. Food. Talk.” he said in response. “You pick the place. I’ll do the cooking. Deal?”

Kane, Tac / Med

“Pleasant,” She mused. “I believe your quarters would be best, if you are to cook.” T’Aria liked the sound of privacy and quiet. Medicine was a rambunctious practice on days like these, despite its characteristically calm, peaceful approach– but any medical officer in Starfleet would laugh if told their job was serene. T’Aria, although a woman of quietude, did not mind the insanity of her profession. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t appreciate a break. “I am off shift at 1630 hours,” She checked the chronometer, it was the end of Alpha. “Does 1730 accomodate your schedule?”

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

“You bet. See you then.” and then he gave her a wink. He then looked past her as the XO approached.

Chris smiled at everything inwardly but kept a straight face when he saw Daniel’s and Jackson. Once they left be looked at Kane and T’Aria. “Great work you two! Sorry I didn’t tell you sooner what I was thinking or going to do but I didn’t know myself until the time. Thank you for going along with it.”

Commander Chris Taggart XO

Kane looked at Taggart and said “For half a second, I kinda hoped you had used an active sample. At least on Daniels. But this works, too. And his training will probably make him wish he had been given the plague. At least… that’s my goal.”

Kane, Tac / Med

Chris laughed.

“Starfleet Command would have been skeptical of the Chernov is we were harbouring a dangerous pathogen.” T’Aria remarked, “I do not believe we need any further trouble from them.”

“Commander, out of curiosity,” She adjusted her stance, clasping her hands behind her back. “…How do you plan to explain our simulation to Captain Stovik?” As a fellow Vulcan, T’Aria was convinced he would not find ideal logic behind the event. Humans were creative, but she still remained curious about Chris’ plan.. if he had one.

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

Chris scratched his head. “I haven’t got that far yet T’Aria. But I am sure I can get him to see the logic of such a tactic. Putting the fear of god into someone to just really prove to them how serious things are. I’m sure I’ll get a lecture and one about ethics as well but in the end he still see the light. He was a doctor as well you know. So I’m sure he’s been through similar things but just did not act on them. “

Commander Chris Taggart XO

“We will all be fortunate to return to duty without reprimand.. or our jobs,” T’Aria observed, sardonically. “We are doctors of much different eras, his views will no doubt contradict our own. Regardless of Captain Stovik’s response,” T’Aria’s lips quivered in the slightest smirk. “I believe Daniels will find, as you say, ‘karma’s an imp.’” close enough.

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

Kane looked at her and said flatly “Doc, that ain’t the word. We need to work on your metaphors.”

Kane, Tac / Med

OOC: Funnily enough, as a kid, I thought that was the phrase. I’m not sure where it came from, but at least I wasn’t smacked for a potty mouth. LOL

IC: “Really?” T’Aria asked, wearing a dumbfounded expression. ‘That is the last time I listen to Lt. Baker.’ She shook her head, pushing down the feeling of indignance. “If you will excuse me, Commander, I have reports to see to.”

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

He bowed. “Of course. I’ll see you both around. I have to go see a man about a horse anyway. ” He smiled to Kane. Then left.

Commander Chris Taggart XO

Kane looked as the Commander left, then looked around the room. “Ok. Let’s get this place cleaned up. Full inventory and orders for replicated goods submitted in thirty minutes!” and then he looked at T’Aria. “I’m gonna finish up and then I have an appointment later I have to get ready for. If you need me, holler Doc.” and he began to walk away to get his own tasks finished.

Kane, Tac / Med

“Understood,” T’Aria returned, flatly. Watching his retreating form, she shook her head. Reports in mind, she turned away from the hubbub of the Sickbay and headed for her office. Someone had to turn the B.S. into a somewhat convincing report.
