Chris was in the lounge putting up signs that congratulated Mwezi in his promotion and DH spot. He was already drinking

Captain Chris Taggart CO

A Vulcan at a party was like a clown in the battle of Somme, but stereotypes had never stopped T’Aria before. Arriving a short while later, she surveyed the lounge, two oblong boxes partially hidden by the dark sleeve of her robes (despite all formalities, T’Aria did not feel inclined to change back into her uniform). Without sign of Mwezi, Taggart’s figure catching her eye, she chose to approach him. “Hello, Captain.” She greeted. It had never quite dawned on her the many names she had addressed Chris by since her arrival; Chief, Doctor, Commander.. and now Captain–at least it never got old.

OOC: Lol! That means you’ve been on the ship awhile as well!
OOC: Chernov was my first ship, and damn she’s come a long way! LOL

Unveiling the boxes, T’Aria slid Mwezi’s into one of her many deep pockets. The second, she held between her fingertips. Gift giving was not common among her people, but T’Aria had lived long enough with humans that their traditions slowly began to grow on her. “I believe a ‘congratulations’ is in order for your promotion.”

Chris stopped hanging the sign and got down off the ladder and wringed his hands like they were dirty. He smiled at T’Aria. “Hello doctor! Nice robe. ” He almost didn’t know she was talking to him since he was still not used to be addressed as captain yet. He looked at her hand with the box and looked back into her eyes with surprise. “Is that for me?” He was almost speechless that she got him something.

Captain Chris Taggart CO

“Does Lt. Mwezi know you’re organizing a celebration in his honour?” T’Aria asked, finding humanity’s love for ‘surprise parties’ curious. Unaccustomed to the whole gift giving procedure, T’Aria nearly forgot she was holding the package. “Yes,” She held out the slim box, “Congratulations, Captain.”

She had known Chris since the moment she stepped into his office, three years prior, a young buck straight from the Academy. A lot had changed since then, some she’d rather forget. Shaking away the thought, T’Aria returned to Chris, curious to his reaction. Inside the box were two objects; one was thin, with red liquid encased in glass, small digits lining the sides. An older thermometer. The other was in mangled condition, its yellowed skin was painted with odd letters and symbols. It was the original Hippocratic Oath, obviously an ancient copy, but nonetheless several centuries old. “You were a doctor first and I assumed you already possessed a stethoscope, Captain. These seemed as though they might fit well beside it.”

Dr. T’Aria

Chris was speechless when he saw the gifts. He immediately hugged T’Aria and then realized what he did stepped back and straightened his uniform. “Thank you very much! These are great!”

Rigidly, T’Aria stood there, dumbfounded by the hug. “Yes..of course, sir.” She nodded in place of a reciprocated smile.

Kane entered and looked around. Seeing T’Aria and the new Captain (the thought making him snort audibly), he decided to let the two Senior Staff members shmooze while he checked out the bar. Nodding to both, he made his way to the booze station. Taking a seat, he brushed the hair from his face and hailed the bartender.

Chris nodded to Kane.

Kane was dressed for the party in his typical fashion. Ragged jeans with a worn thin t-shirt with a faded New Detroit Sychos Roller Derby logo on the front, over which he wore a black leather jacket; he ordered a whiskey and looked around to see who else was coming.

The doors whooshed open and Commander Stovik appeared. He was dressed as usual in his uniform with the new(old) Commander stripes on the sleeves. He noted Kane at the bar and Taggart and Dr. T’Aria talking to the side. He also noted the box what was in Taggart’s hands and assumed it must have been given to him by the doctor. Fascinating, he mused, Vulcan’s were not usually sentimental enough to give a gift. But perhaps T’Aria like himself, took care to use human gestures to fit in better with the crew.

Not in need of a beverage at the moment he just nodded to Kane as he made his way over to the Captain and T’Aria.
“Captain, Doctor.” He said in typical brief Vulcan fashion. He studied the items in the box with a curious, upraised eyebrow. “I recognize the ancient temperature devise but what is the second?” He asked curiously.

Commander Stovik

Chris smiled and was about to reply but T’Aria beat him to it.

“Commander,” T’Aria returned, nodding in acknowledgement. “It is a copy of the Hippocratic Oath, prior to 21st century revisions. Although translated into English several centuries prior, this copy maintains original script.” She explained.

Despite assumptions of Stovik’s knowledge on the Oath, she explained further. “In the fifth century, Hippocrates devised an oath which outlined general guidelines and ethics for the art of medicine. Physicians were required to uphold this oath and adhere to its contents, protecting life regardless of politics, economics, affiliation or any other outside influence. It is similar to the oath taken by Starfleet Phycisians following graduation from the Medical Academy.”

Stovik raised an eyebrow as he nodded, “Fascinating,” He murmured. “ You said this was a copy but it would appear quite old. How old is it?” He asked curiously.

“19th century, however there was no exact date. I would estimate between 1870 to 1890.” She returned, albeit uncertain.

Still smiling. “There you have it! How are you doing Commander?” He hated saying that to him.

“I am quite well, Captain.” He said calmly as he followed the Captain’s gaze toward Kane.

When finished Chris looked at Kane. “Kane, when you finished with that drink, I have something over here for you.”

Captain Chris Taggart CO

Kane looked at the bartender and said “Well, I can’t keep the new Skipper waiting, amIright?” and downed the three fingers of whiskey in a single swallow. Standing up, he began to make his way to the group.

“Perhaps, Captain, we should wait until more of the crew have arrived.”He added softly, aware of what Taggart was thinking as it was his own recommendations.

Commander Stovik

Chris winked at Stovik. “No sir. This is something entirely different but one if I know my friend well enough, he will line more than what we have planned for later. ” He sly smile got bigger.

Captain Chris Taggart CO

T’Aria glanced between them, an eyebrow shot up in place of any comment. Resigning her interest, she figured her place in this conversation had faded. “Captain, Commander.” She stepped back, giving them full privacy in..whatever this was.

Dr. T’Aria
CMO

Chris nodded. “You don’t have to go doctor. But if you do, then don’t stray far. ” He smiled again.

Captain Chris Taggart CO

“I will endeavour not to, Captain.” T’Aria returned in a Vulcanish way of saying, ‘No promises, Skipper.’

“Don’t leave on my account, Doc. Or did you get your fill of my boyish charm on our shift?” and he looked at Taggart “What’s up, Skipper?” he asked sarcastically, then looked at Stovik. “How ya doin’, Commander?” Anyone that paid attention would know that Kane had never really addressed anyone, superior officer or not, by their proper title. He may have said the correct rank, but there was always a bit of… something… in his tone that made the word seem like it was some kind of inside joke to him. Except this once. The ‘Commander’ that issued forth was touched with a bit of unusual respect.

“You are anything but boyish, P.A.” She retorted, but there was a hint of something besides harshness beneath it.

Chris smiled at Kane and put up a finger to have him wait a second. He put the box lid back on the awesome gift that T’Aria just gave him and put it on a table with a bunch of things under a white sheet that covered the table. He felt around until he found the box he wanted and looked inside to make sure. It was the right one. Coming back to Kane he handed him the box.

“I thought of you one day and looked up these things since your from New Detroit. I wanted to give you a small token of appreciation for the friendship that we have. It hasn’t been easy but I’m glad you have been there for me. Like the times we beat up that officer, spent time in jail, went on our little excursion, and faking out those two med officers with a fake disease just to name a few things. “

The box contained a black Detroit Tigers baseball cap with a white D on the front and a red jungle themed Hawaiian shirt with birds on it. The shirt Kane would recognize as the famous one Tom Selleck wore in Magnum P.I..

Kane looked at the items handed to him and then looked up and glared at Taggart. “You son of a -” and he bit off the last part and stormed away without a word.

Less than a minute later, he returned wearing the shirt and the cap; his hair partially tucked back underneath it. “This doesn’t mean we are taking long walks on the beach and holding hands while the sun sets.”
