As the approached the door to sickbay, Taiya could sense Lia’s trepidation and gently took her hand. As the doors swished open, they made their way to the nearest doctor and Lia cautiously hid behind Alex’s leg, her head poking out to survey the scene.

Worthy of surprise, the sickbay was at a lull; its usual hubbub of life stalled by a lack of patients. As it was a general theme for the shift, majority of the department’s officers were on call but sent away from the bay to pursue effective work. The CMO saw little reason in keeping her infirmary staffed with idle doctors. Of those present, a young, Vulcan doctor turned towards Taiya’s family.

“Excuse me doctor, do you have time to complete our boarding exams or would you prefer me to make an appointment?” she asked, hoping that they would be able to get them over and done given Lia’s anxiety.

Commander Keali (Incoming XO)

“An appointment will not be necessary, Commander.” T’Aria assured them, gesturing to a nearby biobed. “If you would have a seat, I will be with you momentarily.”

Taiya smiled gratefully as she hoisted Lia up onto her lap, sensing her nervousness. “Thank you doctor,” she replied warmly as Alex took a seat next to them and patted Lia on the head. Lia clung on to her teddies, drawing them close into her chest as she watched the doctor with great suspicion.

“Nurse O’Connor, please assist me at biobeds two through four in the primary bay.” She called out, knowing the nurse was close enough to hear her if he was listening.

The nurse, staggering from his routine inventory check (which he was grateful to be distracted from if only for a few moments), retrieved a tricorder and made his way over. He appeared gauche in his mannerisms, but his medical aptitude made up for his lack of physical coordination. “Goodday,” he greeted.

Dr. T’Aria and NE O’Connor, Medical

Lia giggled a little at the ungainly nurse and began to relax a little as she replied quietly, “…hello, I’m Lia…” in a soft voice. Taiya popped her up on the bed and held her hand as they waited for the doctor to begin.

Commander Keali (Incoming XO)

“Hiya Lia! I’m O’Connor, but you can call me Micah if you’d like.” Micah knew it wasn’t typically acceptable to have a patient call him by his first name, but he wanted Lia to feel safe in the Chernov’s sickbay. She may be a battleship, but that didn’t mean the little girl should live in fear aboard her. “My..” he glanced at T’Aria, searching for a word to fill the blank, “friend is gonna run some scans on you. But don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt! Right, doctor?”

Lia momentarily tensed and squeezed Taiya’s hand at the mention of scans but O’Connor’s friendly nature soon put her at ease. She nodded quietly and looked towards T’Aria.

T’Aria stared at him blankly for a second, “Yes, of course, nurse. Miss Lia, do you mind sitting straight for me?” She inquired, “Think of yourself as a tree.”

Lia shot a quick glance to Taiya to check it was ok before cautiously complying with the doctor’s wishes. As she waited in anticipation her lower lip began to quiver as she held on tightly to her mother.

A tall, bearded human man came into view. His hair was wild and disheveled, cascading down and hiding most of his face and completely out of regulation. Tattoos peeked out form the collar of his blue uniform, covered his hands, and Lieutenant’s stripes showed on his sleeves. A feral sneer crossed his lips and he looked around at the assembly and then at the CMO. “Need a hand, Doc? Just finished the hand in Surgery Two.”

Kane, Tac / Med

“I look forwards to the report,” T’Aria remarked, “grab a tricorder and take Mister Keali.” Kane was an intimidating spirit, and although she’d never seen him with children, his nature left the doctor in doubt that he would have a positive effect on Lia, who already seemed perturbed by her surroundings. Gesturing to the man who had entered with the Commander and her young daughter, T’Aria nodded to him.

Alex gave Lia a quick kiss on the forehead and followed Kane. As Lia watched him take a seat at the next bed, Taiya smiled and quickly smoothed her hair. “See, it’s nothing to worry about, Daddy is getting one too. If you can be a brave girl, maybe the doctors will let you have a look when I have my scans?” she asked with a hopeful look to the medical team. Although the little girl was clearly anxious, it was already a hundred times better than her last exam where she managed to lock herself in the CMO’s office…

Commander Keali (Incoming XO)

“Of course! We’d love to have an assistant for your Mum’s exams.” Misha chuckled softly at the thought of recruiting the little girl to their team.

T’Aria detached a small device from the medical tricorder, “This is a medical scanner, as I’m sure you’ve seen before. It is going to tell Nurse O’Connor and I you are healthy.”

O’Connor smiled when an idea popped into his head, “Excuse me a moment..” he winked at Lia as he retreated from the primary bay.

[Lia’s scan results here, please!]

A few moments into the examinations, a new, and very strange face entered the Sickbay. Technically two faces, really, as two men in security colours stepped through the door, one individual supporting the other in standing. The helper was an absolutely massive individual, seven feet tall. While his friend was an ordinary human at just under six feet tall (and sporting a rather painful looking gash on his leg), the taller figure was definitely not humanoid.

Lt. Mwezi was, as mentioned, seven feet tall. If you didn’t include the ears. He was a Lupine alien, looking like a wolf had stood on its hind legs and put clothes on. His face was similar to that of a dog or wolf, including, as mentioned before, the ears. He was covered in fur, of a brownish-grey coloration, and his legs were of the digitigrade variety, resulting in him walking on his toes instead of heels as a human does. When he turned to help the other security officer onto a bed, he revealed a long, rather fluffy canid tail.

A nurse NE stepped over to help, allowing T’Aria and Kane to focus on the medical examinations, and the alien let his gaze drift over the small family. His expression was closed off slightly. Calculating. He had met the XO on the bridge along with everything else that had been going on, but then had not been the time for detailed assessment. Especially not of the family. Civilians on a starship. A fascinating, but dangerous idea.

He stepped over to the XO, and placed his hands together in order to bow slightly to her. “Commander. It is good to be able to meet you in a more calm environment. With more time. If you recall, I am Mwezi of Galdor. I am the Chief Tactical Officer and in charge of the security department.”

Mwezi, CTO
Ooc: oops. Didn’t mean to write this much. Sorry. In other news, welcome to the ship, Keali.

Without turning around from his new patient, Kane said “Warren, you mind? We’ve got an examination to conduct, and we don’t need your breath screwing up the scanners. You can play with your new friend later. Right now, he’s busy.” and the tattooed man looked at the new XO’s spouse.

“Any new injuries, illnesses, blah blah blah since your last examination?” he asked, obviously bored and omitting any kind of formal acknowledgement of the woman’s relationship to her husband’s position or rank. Bedside manner was something Kane either didn’t possess, or chose not to practice at this particular time.

Kane, Tac / Med

Ooc: you’re examining the husband. XO is the wife.
-Mir

OOC: Woops. Thats what I get for reading on a phone. Thank you for the head’s up! Fixed.

James

Dr. T’Aria/NE O’Connor (who is a master of the disappearing act).
