It was two weeks later and the Chernov was on a regular routine patrol near a recently surveyed system. The culture there was pre-warp in the medieval state of development. They were passing by the system at warp a day away by warp 3 when the science station beeped an alert!

Checking the sensors they picked up surprisingly the indications of a low level warp reaction from within the system! The burst was barely warp 1 in strength and lasted only 5 seconds but it was recorded, though no sign of any starship was present.

After the chaos of the last mission, William was glad to be sitting at his console reading sensor information, not running around letting a lunatic control his body so that he would survive a barbaric fight with lizard people and other strange aliens. He was even more glad that he wasn’t sitting in that Redacted Central chair. The Captain had threatened Commendations after their last mission and he wasn’t sure if he’d gone through with it. He turned in his chair “Captain, I’ve detected a low level warp reading from the Survey system. Barely warp one and lasted five seconds but it was there, Sensors don’t detect any starship in the vicinity.” He declared.

Scans on the system showed it had 4 planets, the closest to the G-type yellow-red star was about twice the size of Mercury but just as free of atmosphere and filled with assorted mineral deposits, but all in all was a dead rock. The 2nd and 3rd were small scale gas filled planets of argon a little bigger then Venus. The 3rd had a small barely visible ice ring to it made of methane. The 4th planet barely in the system’s habitable zone of influence was class-m slightly bigger then Earth by a few kilometers in a spherical sense. Signs were present of a medieval based society across the central part of a single large land mass. Weather on the planet was quite murky though by Earth standards, a lot of fog, rain, lightening storms, etc were picked up in droves. Atmosphere was still plenty breathable though with all the rain and such likely a little cooler then would be normally comfortable. Details of the exact racial composition of the planet and any animals or the like would have to be taken when the ship was closer.

As this was taken in another echoed warp burst was picked up somewhere in the system possibly near the 4th planet. Again the burst was barely reaching warp 1, but it lasted even less then three seconds this time before winking out. Again no sign of space craft was picked up.

Chris turned in his seat. “Really? That’s odd and cool at same time. This is the only planet with intelligent life in this system that I know of.”

“Since we are supposed to stay here and observe, send a couple probes out to that signal location and send a more out in various directions covering the system. I don’t want to be caught with my pants down.”

Captain Chris Taggart CO

David turned from his station. “Is it possible that they’re unmanned warp field tests? Neighbouring planet or moon pops off a few probes with warp engines so they’re not risking pilot lives before they’re sure it works. Commander Grey, once the probes are out, rewind the scans. Can we tell from here if they’re naturally composed, or metallic like spacecraft?”

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

Mwezi stood in his usual spot behind the Captain’s chair. Despite his promotion, it was still his favorite spot and he often took it. He liked being on the bride, able to see and hear the most important goings-on. It gave him a better idea of how everything was happening, and how to support the security aboard the ship. He had an officer at the Tactical station, and one of a few highly trusted officers in charge of the weapon maintenance when in battle. It was a good arrangement.

He didn’t talk much, just… listening to the conversation between the XO, CO, and the rest of the bridge crew.
