Scans on the system showed it had 4 planets, the closest to the G-type yellow-red star was about twice the size of Mercury but just as free of atmosphere and filled with assorted mineral deposits, but all in all was a dead rock. The 2nd and 3rd were small scale gas filled planets of argon a little bigger then Venus. The 3rd had a small barely visible ice ring to it made of methane. The 4th planet barely in the system’s habitable zone of influence was class-m slightly bigger then Earth by a few kilometers in a spherical sense. Signs were present of a medieval based society across the central part of a single large land mass. Weather on the planet was quite murky though by Earth standards, a lot of fog, rain, lightening storms, etc were picked up in droves. Atmosphere was still plenty breathable though with all the rain and such likely a little cooler then would be normally comfortable. Details of the exact racial composition of the planet and any animals or the like would have to be taken when the ship was closer.

As this was taken in another echoed warp burst was picked up somewhere in the system possibly near the 4th planet. Again the burst was barely reaching warp 1, but it lasted even less then three seconds this time before winking out. Again no sign of space craft was picked up.

Chris turned in his seat. “Really? That’s odd and cool at same time. This is the only planet with intelligent life in this system that I know of.”

“Since we are supposed to stay here and observe, send a couple probes out to that signal location and send a few more out in various directions covering the system. I don’t want to be caught with my pants down.”

Captain Chris Taggart CO

David turned from his station. “Is it possible that they’re unmanned warp field tests? Neighboring planet or moon pops off a few probes with warp engines so they’re not risking pilot lives before they’re sure it works. Commander Grey, once the probes are out, rewind the scans. Can we tell from here if they’re naturally composed, or metallic like spacecraft?”

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

Mwezi stood in his usual spot behind the Captain’s chair. Despite his promotion, it was still his favorite spot and he often took it. He liked being on the bride, able to see and hear the most important goings-on. It gave him a better idea of how everything was happening, and how to support the security aboard the ship. He had an officer at the Tactical station, and one of a few highly trusted officers in charge of the weapon maintenance when in battle. It was a good arrangement.

He didn’t talk much, just… listening to the conversation between the XO, CO, and the rest of the bridge crew.

As the Captain and the new first officer spoke William saw the second burst “Another burst, three seconds this time” He called out as he tapped a few commands into his console launching two probes as ordered. William then turned around in his chair, tensing up slightly as was his way “According to the recent survey the only habited planet is a Medieval society, pre-warp. I don’t think it’s probable that someone that lacks warp technology is capable of hiding from our survey units.” He spun back around in his chair “I’ll try to see what I can from here but if we want to get any detail we’re going to have to get be in the system.”

The probes went out and as they traveled playing back the scans did not reveal anything metal wise picked up near the 4th planet. Indeed if anything it seemed more likely the warp bursts came from the planet or more likely on the surface. As the probes entered the system they picked up another oddity not reported by the passing survey ship previously or on their scans till now. A faint wisp of a micro nebula was all about the system barely there really more like a light spacial particle cloud then anything.

As one of the probes neared the 4th planet the class-m world fully came into view, the misty/foggy storm filled world was a murky sight to behold not pretty looking by any stretch of the imagination it was frankly down right dull and grey in tone. Scans by the probe confirmed much of what they had picked up before. There was a single land mass about twice the size of Australia on Earth scattered around by smaller islands all about the planet. All in all about 80% of the planet was mostly water. The society on the planet was situated in a forested mountain region in the central area of the main continent. Currently there were several thousand inhabitants in the region scattered among a large group of villages around the forests and mountains and rivers. Transport were by horse like animals pulling or being ridden on with wooden wagons. The people seemed human like with dark tanned skin. The roads they traveled on were muddy or stone lined, and the rivers were fished from the banks by stony eyed tough looking fishermen. Clothing was darker toned and drab a muted collection of browns, greens, blacks, and tans for the men and similar colored simple dresses or pants or the women. Shirts for either sex were of similar color but all seemed to be long sleeved, no t-shirts in evidence.

None of the probes picked up any sign of a warp signature in orbit, though residue of the signal was being picked up somewhere in the mountains to the north of a large fog lined village.

GM CockRoach

“Wow! Ok William. Is there something on the planet that cause something close to a warp field? A volcano erupting, plate tectonics? Either way we will wait for the probes to finish before we move out or not. But just in case. Lt. Mwezi. Shields up and yellow alert without sound.”

Captain Chris Taggart CO

Mwezi nodded to his officer, trusting him to follow the instructions. A moment later shields were up and the color of the lighting in the room changed to yellow.

“Electroplasma. It’s the central fuel generated by the matter/antimatter reaction. Scan the area for any signs of electromagnetic fields similar to those in warp drive as well as electroplasma.” David glanced at the Captain. He hoped he wasn’t overstepping his bounds, but he was a trained engineer.

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

Chris nodded to David. “Good idea. All I know of command is the courses they taught us and experience. I’m a surgeon by trade. Anything that you have that you think can help, no matter how trivial, speak up. Everyone has a say around here since it’s everyone’s lives we are playing with. “

Captain Chris Taggart CO

William nodded and set the probes scanners to search for Electroplasma “I’m getting the information back from the probes first scans, a few new things. From what I can tell the warp signature is more than likely to have come from the surface of the inhabited world more than anything else. There also appears to be a micro nebula around the system much like particle clouds.” He paused for a moment as more readings came in “Captain, I have an approximate location of the warp signature, a residue around a mountainous area north of a particular village” He turned in his chair “I also have an analysis of the species living on the planet, dark-tan skinned humanoids living in scattered villages over the main continent.” He explained with mild interest. “I recommend an investigation of the system, outside of being an interesting anthropological study this is not a civilization that should have anything close to warp technology.” He shrugged “Might be snakes in our backyard.”
