Lt Cmdr Malkin walked towards the Captain’s office, already recognised as the new XO. Some people carried themselves like career officers, Cmdr Malkin was one of them. He stopped an engineering Ensign. “The Captain’s office; it’s on this deck, correct?” He was quizzing the young Officer. “Yes. Sir. Six doors that way.”
“Very good Ensign.”
“Thank you sir!” It took a few moments to register that all this had been a test.

As he came to the door and pressed the chime, David stood to attention.

Chris was staring out the window looking into space. He really appreciated the silence and beauty of it all. He heard the chime but did not turn to see who it was. He just stood there, looking out the window leaning up against the bulk. “Come!” Came a commanding voice.

The office was neat and it had a bunch of square puzzle boxes in glass cases around the room and desk. The one on the desk was still wrapped in a brown paper cover with a red wax seal pressed into it to keep the paper together. It too was in a glass case but not opened like the others. Around the office was painting and pictures of a man with white skin and pins stuck all over head and face, wearing a long black leather gothic outfit.

In one corner of the office was a big clear jar filled with an unknown liquid that had a human arm and leg in it. Both looked to have been ripped off and eaten some.

David entered the office and eyed its contents. “Lieutenant Commander David Malkin, reporting for duty sir.”

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

Without turning Chris gestured with his hand. “Please have a seat Commander. “

He stood just staring out at a quasar in the extreme distance. “You ever wonder David with the vastness of space how close we actually come to finding or meeting new life? I mean it is like in the 20th century where you just miss getting hit by a train or drunk driver because you were seconds to late or early and not even know about it.”

Captain Chris Taggart CO

“I imagine” David said as he sat “that in every solar system, there is, once was, or will be life. The only thing that’s impossible is knowing it all.” David was an engineer by training, but sometimes indulged himself in exploring the rabbit hole his career had taken him down.

Chris nodded.

“Feeling particularly like exploring, sir?”

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

When Chris heard that part about exploring he turned to finally face the new XO and smiled very big.

“Exactly! That’s what we should do! We aren’t doing anything at the moment. I’ll ask command. They might say no since we are a battle cruiser and not an explorer class. But that’s never stopped me before.”

He took a seat. “So David. I read up on you and saw you were looking for an XO position. I read your stuff and really liked what I saw. So what led you to take this course?

Captain Chris Taggart CO

“My last position was an XO position, though this transfer is welcome. My last assignment was to a routine patrol. From what I understand, the Chernov is anything but routine.”

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

Chris leaned back in his chair. “You got that right! We do a vast array of missions. We are always on our toes. What did you specialize in Engineering?”

Captain Chris Taggart CO

David smiled a little. “Warp drive sir. Theoretical and practical. I know your ship’s engines inside and out. I also know your current Chief. Dr Alex Reid. Despite his… anxieties, absolute genius. That’s where I come bearing sad tidings sir. At least for us. Dr Reid is due to be recalled to Earth, promoted, and made a design engineer on a new class of exploration cruiser. He wrote a paper from downstairs on a faster warp drive. Engineering department went insane. He doesn’t even know yet. But you should.”

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

Chris leaned back in his chair. “Wow! Really? That’s incredible! Too bad we’re losing him but I like to see people excel. At least you’re here. I know absolutely nothing about the engines. I don’t even know how they work. “

Captain Chris Taggart CO

David nodded. “And I can’t perform surgery. We each have our field. We’ll bring in a new Chief and hand over the department soon.” He handed a datapad over. “My- and Dr Reid’s transfer orders.”

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

Chris took the PaDD and sighed before signing both transfers. Handing ther PaDD back he put his hand out to shake. “Welcome aboard good sir! Do you want me to show you around the ship?”

Captain Chris Taggart CO

“I would welcome the opportunity sir.” David shook the Captain’s hand. “Where would you like to begin?”

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

“Excellent. We will begin with showing you your quarters so you can put your stuff away and know how to get from there to here. Then we will stop by Engineering shop you can see what we have and to give the good doctor the good news.”

Captain Chris Taggart CO

“Sounds good to me Captain. Lead the way. Though I understand he’s not the only Ph.D onboard.” David was curious about the ship, her crew, her missions. Only so much could be gleaned from reading.

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO

“Great! Follow me then. And no. There are a few others. It’s nice to have that experience and education on board. “

Captain Chris Taggart CO

David followed the Captain. “I considered higher education, but life intervened and sent me to the Academy.” Walking down the hall, past the crew, David was beginning to feel comfortable. This wasn’t so different from his last position.

-Lt Cmdr David Malkin, XO
