Mwezi stepped into the Cafeteria and glanced around. He didn’t see anyone in particular that he was interested in sitting next to, so after getting some hearty tacos from the food dispensers, he found an empty seat and sat down. He yawned, then pulled out a Padd and opened it up, finding his Book-reading app and opening it up to the last page he had been on. To anyone glancing over his shoulder, the page would be an illegible mess, squiggles and lines in a written language they didn’t understand, but to Mwezi it was a relief to be able to read in the language he grew up with.

He was quite enjoying this particular book. A translation of an Earth novel from the 20th century. About a young boy entering a magical world and attending school. Yes, it was quite a fascinating book to read, and he was fully engrossed in the tale as he quietly munched on his tacos.

Mwezi, CTO

Without warning, a tray dropped onto the table across from Mwezi. A familiar mass of unkempt hair and colorful, tattooed hands announced the arrival of the Chief Medical Officer. He sat down and gave a nod to the Tactical Officer, but said only “‘Sup.” before he picked up a fork and began eating the ridiculously large salad in front of him.

Kane, CMO

Mwezi gave Kane a short look, then a cordial nod. He took another bite of his meaty, cheesy taco, and pretty much swallowed it immediately. “LeRoy,” he greeted the medical officer, having done some research into Earth history and found what he was pretty sure was the origin of the nickname Kane had decided to give him. “I believe the proper response to ‘sup’, is ‘the ceiling’? Is that correct?” he also responded.

Mwezi, CTO

Kane didnt look up, but said with a half-mouthful of food “It is if you want to sound like a kid in 3rd grade.” and he swallowed and looked at the CTO. What might have been the very beginning of a grin swept across his face, vanishing just as fast. “If you want to be a big boy, you can just say ‘Hey’. But you do you, Warren.” and he took another bite.

Kane, CMO

“I apologize,” Mwezi said in a deadpan tone, what felt like his normal voice when he was around Kane. “Human speech is confusing.” He took another bite of his meal, chewed for a moment, then just popped the last of the taco into his mouth and swallowed.

“You’re telling me, man… and dont get me started on French.” he said in agreement.

“The newest member of your department is… Interesting. Captain Taggart had some fun pretending to be… I am not sure other than the fact that she did not know that he was Captain.” He commented.

Mwezi

Kane stopped eating and took a drink. “Yeah, she’s… well… new. I’m not sure how well she’ll take to extended time on a ship, but her skills are solid. Hopefully she works out.” and he took another bite.

Kane, CMO

Mwezi put away the book he had been reading and pushed slightly away from the table. His feet stretched out in front of him and he took the moment to do a little people-watching.

“Many of the other humans describe you as crass and unlikable,” he commented after a while. “I think you would do well among a Hatriku crew. You have a similar… No-nonsense attitude.”

Mwezi, Sec

“Dunno who they are, but they seem like my kind of people.” Kane said around the mouthful of salad. As he chewed, he took a long and appraising look at Mwezi. Finally swallowing, he looked at the officer and said “Many of the ‘humans’ on this ship have it it easy. They don’t know what it’s like to start off behind the curve, put there as punishment just for being born.” He looked around the room at the assembled personnel. After a moment he looked back at the lupine officer. When he spoke, his voice was as it normally was… but there was a hint of something else. Not anger… but perhaps pity.

“Ninety-nine percent if these people have no idea what it is like to have to survive. To go each day simply trying not to die or be killed. They want to call me crass and unlikable? So be it. You know what I call them? Ungrateful and soft. They have no idea how hard some people had it, and they will never see it… even if it’s right there in front of them. They choose to ignore it, because it doesn’t fit with their view of how things should be.” and his eyes locked with Mwezi’s, seeing what his response would be.

Kane, CMO

Mwezi nodded his understanding. “The humans of Earth have mostly had a very… plush life. Even with what has happened to them, the near destruction of their planet and the actual destruction of Vulcan. They do not understand suffering. I do not claim to have gone through the same suffering that you did, but I understand hardship,” he said with somewhat of a stare off to the side. “My people do not shy away from hardships, especially the hardships of others. I do not find you crass, Kane. I find your realism to be refreshing compared to the uncontrollable optimism of so many Starfleet Officers.”

Mwezi, CTO

Kane nodded once in acknowledgement. “I think that’s the nicest thing you’ve said to me since we met.” and he took a drink and leaned back. His facial expression hadnt changed, but there was something akin to humor in his eyes when he said “But I’m still calling you Warren, Warren.” and he took another drink.

William entered the Galley holding a small wooden box, cradled in his arms like a small child, he scanned the room for a moment for an empty table but the two strange-looking men caught his eyes, to be precise the grey-brown fur of the Ships weapons officer was as familiar to Will now like the back of his own hand as almost every time he turned to face the Captain he could see the Galdori. The tattooed face of the recently promoted medical Chief was unique and as such could not be mistaken for anyone else. In a few steps he’d reached the pair “Gentlemen, May I join you?” He asked, his accent had a southern drawl instead of his regular Scottish one, those who had worked with him long enough knew he usually switched accent when on and off duty. He patted the small box expectantly.

Kane looked up and glared, but that was no indication of anything unusual. “I doubt you’d listen if I said no.” and he lifted his glass and took a drink.

Kane, CMO

Will blinked before sitting down “That’s true” He placed the box on the table “It’s a shame you were promoted away from the bridge, I do miss your wit” He smiled politely but his tone didn’t suggest that he was joking “In any case, it is fortunate that you two are here as I was hoping to share this with someone” He fidgeted with the box slightly, dragging a panel away revealing an unmarked bottle filled with brown liquid “That is if you care for southern whiskey” He removed the bottle and placed it on the table “My mother sent it to me to celebrate some achievement she believes I’ve made, I’m unsure of what exactly. In any case, it’s aged twenty-five years Kentucky Whiskey, I personally prefer Scotch but beggars and choosers” He reached into the box and pulled three out of four glasses from the base, heavy base real glass and placed them on the table “I don’t have much in the way of friends but I hope sharing a drink with some colleagues would suffice”
