Lt. Commander Michael Sideman had only been a Lt. Commander for a couple of days and his assignment as an XO was very new to him. As he walked down hallways other crew could welcome him and call him Commander and sir. It was different as he never let his rank go to his head. To Michael, everyone on the ship was a team. But this was different and he knew it..here he was an executive officer…he must set an example and help keep the crew moving.

He was scared but he could not show that as he approached the Captain’s door to report in. Hitting the chime button he waited for a reply.

Michael Sideman
XO, USS Chernov

There was no reply. A NE LT manning the Conn looked over to him. “If you want the Captain sir, then he in Engineering going over the new ship components that were installed yesterday.”

NE Lt Swing Shift Dude

Looking over at the NE Lt Swing Swift Dude, Michael responded, “Thank you very much.”

With that he headed down to engineering, almost getting lost once. He walked into Engineering and looked for the Captain.

XO

The captain was with a bunch of Ensigns and listed crew members while they were showing him what warp parts were the news one and what they can do. “So we can go faster? Right?” The Captain said. The NE Enlisted member spoke up. “Well. Yes and no. Theoretically we can go faster but it won’r be much, like .2-.4 more warp speed and we will not know until we test it.”

The captain then laughed. “Then let’s test it Petty Officer! You get to do the deed? Go to that comm over there and tell the bridge that we will be running a warp test.” He looked confused. “Uh…Me? You want me to do it and not an officer or yourself?”

The captain laughed and put his hands on the Petty Officers shoulders. “Sir. You have just as much knowledge so go ahead and do it. We all got your back. Don’t worry.”

The Petty Officer smiled. “Thank you sir!” and went over to the Comms. [O] Bridge this is Engineering. Come to a full stop and we will conduct a warp test in gradual fashion. [O]

The Captain smiled at him and saw with his one eye a new guy in the back ground with some rank. He forgot he was getting a new XO today because he thought it wasn’t until next week. “Hey you! Over there in the funny colored uniform! Come over. We won’t bite....or at least they won’t but I might.” He laughed knowing it was true. He might bite the XO.

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

Sideman did not know what to make of the Captain’s comments–i.e. was he always this nice or did he change when it was crunch time? Putting a smile on his face, Sideman walked over to the Captain…

“Sir, Lt. Commander Michael Sideman reporting for duty” he said.

Executive Officer

“Oh! Was that today? I apologize. Ladies and gentlemen let me introduce you to the new Executive Officer of this ship, Lt. Commander Sideman. Welcome good sir.” He reached out a hand for the XO to shake. once done he continued. “Don’t report here Commander. Now is not the time. We will talk after this warp experiment and the good Petty Officer here is going to help us. Right Petty Officer Lewdone?”

“Right sir!” [O]Bridge go to warp 1 for 10 minutes and keep doing that until we get to warp 5. I will give you instructions once we are there. Engineering out.[O]

“Excellent work Lewdone. Now we play the waiting game. Commander Sideman do you have any comments about what we are doing here?”

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

“Aye Captain” Responded Sideman.

“It appears to me that you are trying to increase warp speed, even if just slightly. Seems like a good idea to me, sir” Sideman said.
