William disliked psychologists as a general rule, one almost stopped his admission into the fleet nearly eight years ago during his first year at Starfleet Academy. But seeing as Starfleet saw fit to assign this Battlecruiser with a Betazoid psychologist it was his duty to have a check-in. There wasn’t much to do for him until they would arrive at Galdor so he requested a time allotment. He was standing outside the office door for nearly ten full seconds before hitting the Chime and waiting to be let in.

Kanina opened the door around four seconds later, then held a hand out politely. “Lieutenant Commander Grey. Welcome.” She had, of course, sensed him outside, but had remained behind her desk until he hit the chime.

William took her hand and shook it careful not to hold it too weakly. “Thank you ensign” He said in a polite tone. He looked around the office with mild interest as he stepped inside “I’m afraid I’m not certain how this works, having an onboard counselor is an oddity in the Fleet” He clasped his hands behind his back and stood still. His mind was busy memorizing the layout.

Kanina nodded warmly, then turned around to go sit down. “It’s experimental right now, but I have high hopes. It was my mentor’s proposal, and she nominated me personally.” She took a seat and grabbed her tea off the table beside her chair. “Feel free to grab something to drink if you’d like.” She would allow him to order his own refreshment directly from the replicator rather than retrieve it for him. “To start with, we just talk. Many people are concerned that Counselors are nothing more than interrogators, or that we report on everyone to command. That’s a myth, if a prevalent one. Some of my colleagues take notes during their appointments. I don’t.” She found it tended to distress whoever she was speaking to. “I might write a summary or bullet points after, but those are sealed, not to mention vague and hard to understand.” Some people were resistant to the idea, but she did her best to explain the process and her purpose thoroughly. “For example, I use nouns to identify different emotions in my notes. If I write the word bread 7 times in a month, no one but me will know what it means.”
-Kanina Dran, CNS

William walked around for a few moments before sitting down across from Dran without any refreshments “A simple word substitution cypher wouldn’t be difficult to break” He said casually “You may wish to use a simple substitution cypher or a more complex Homphonic one.” He smiled politely “I don’t mind you taking notes, I don’t worry about Command knowing about what’s in my head”

CSO, 2O

Kanina shrugged slightly. “The likelihood of anyone not me gleaning useful information from my notes is very low, but I appreciate your candidness.” She settled into her chair, aware that the motion would draw his attention. “Why don’t you tell me a bit about yourself?” Knowing how the man thought of himself would give her a good basis for what sort of questions she should ask.

I was born on August fifth 2224. I spent my youth between a Texas farm and Inverness Scotland. I went to the University of Princeton at the age of fifteen. I was in San Fransisco with my father visiting Starfleet Academy when the USS Vengeance crashed into the city” His emotions seemed to vary from serenity to soft dread, nothing very intense “After I graduated university at eighteen I enlisted into Starfleet, after three years I was a commissioned Lieutenant and assigned as the Chernov’s Chief Science Officer a little over three years ago. A year and a half after I joined Captain Taggart promoted me to Lieutenant Commander” He leaned back, he seemed a little conflicted by that. After a moment of reflection, he continued, “I also spent a year as a junior tutor after I graduated from the Academy.” He added, he seemed to recite his own story as if from his record.

CSO, 2O

Kanina nodded. “Tell me about the promotion.”
-Kanina Dran, CNS

William crossed his legs and shrugged “Not much to say. This was after a mission in the Old Vulcan system. It was the first time I’d taken command of the Con, Starfleet Command had just removed Captain Stovik and Placed Taggart in command, some political reason regarding the mission. After the mission was over Captain Taggart was the permanent CO, he promoted me to Lieutenant Commander and made me second officer” He scratched his neck “I was 23 years old, since then I’ve been acting first officer at least three times” He paused “Four if you count right now.”

CSO, 2O (Acting XO)

“That’s quite impressive,” Kanina complemented. “How do you feel about acting as the XO?”
-Kanina Dran, CNS

William took a moment to consider her question, she could sense him going through and suppressing several different emotions as he thought “I’m not certain. I know that since we lost the majority of the fleet during the destruction of Vulcan almost a decade ago many young officers have been pushed up in ranks and the case of young Command level staff has increased, Captain Kirk is a good example” He explained “But I never expected to be given such responsibilities so soon. I sometimes wonder if I am the right person for the job, one or two heartbeats away from being responsible for four-hundred-ninety-five souls. I certainly didn’t expect to have the support of so many of the junior crew.”

CSO, 2O (aXO)

“Are you aware that I am among the oldest of the department heads?” Not that there was a department, but officially, she was the head counselor. “I am older than every command staff member on this ship, with the sole exception of Captain Taggart.” She paused, allowing that to sink in. “I had a similar experience. Survivors from Vulcan were my first assignment.” Newly 20, and barely licensed, but it was difficult for non-Betazoids to act as counselors to people with such control, and there were so few Betazoids willing to agree to the Federations standards on telepathic communication that she had suddenly been made responsible on a scale she hadn’t been able to imagine. “It is difficult to reconcile relative inexperience with new responsibilities. From what I can tell, you are an excellent XO, if a little green. If you were responsible for this crew, if Captain Taggart was indisposed, I daresay nothing would arise you would be unable to handle.”
-Kanina Dran, CNS

William considered her words for a moment “I have little doubt in my abilities to lead in times of crisis. But interpersonal relationships are not my forte, I am not good with most social interactions. At least not when I am in uniform. There’s a reason I became a scientist.”

CSO

Kanina laughed slightly. “I believe you underestimate yourself.” She tilted her head in interest, then spoke again. “What branch of science calls to you?”
-Kanina Dran, CNS

“I currently have three degrees, a doctorate in Physics, with a focus on quantum physics, a masters in xenobiology working on my doctoral thesis and a bachelors in genetics” He listed up his focuses “I am mainly a physicist, most of it is useful in my line of work.” He explained “I like numbers, they make sense.”

CSO, 2O

Kanina’s mouth quirked up in amusement. “That sentence seems to be a universal constant. What inspired you to branch into biology?”
-Kanina Dran, CNS

William hesitated “I’m smart, very smart” He started “I understand science in a way few can, it speaks to me. If you mean on a personal level then I’d say when I was fifteen and started at university, my professors pointed me towards physics and biology. Two very different fields that I meshed with fairly well.”

CSO, 2O

Kanina nodded. Many would take his words as a boast, but she felt the truth behind them, the simple statement of fact. “I see that.” She paused for a moment, considering. “I’d consider your check-in completed. You can still come talk whenever you like, but there’s nothing I’m concerned about that I think you need to see me about.”
-Kanina Dran, CNS

William stood up “Thank you, counsellor, I don’t think I will feel the need for a chat but I appreciate the offer” He gave the woman a curt nod and turned around towards the door “Have a good day” He finished.
