(Snip, snip!)

Umbri took a deep breath before responding. Talking about her past wasn’t something she was too terribly fond of, but T’Aria was likely a good person to share it with. “Well, I’m 23 years old, human by the way. I was born in Salem, Massachusetts, USA, but my birth name was Carolyn Hawkins. I changed my name to Umbri Zayne when I joined the Academy because I wanted a fresh start, but mainly because I’d recently had a major falling out with my parents which resulted in them cutting me off. I don’t really like to share what led to that happening, but the broad version is that they couldn’t accept some aspects of my current lifestyle. Parents are supposed to be there for you no matter what, but they failed on that job. I don’t consider them my real family anymore,” Umbri paused for a moment, the memory of her getting disowned still very fresh.

T’Aria listened and eased her pace to a leisure ramble. Her serpentine eyes shone with a soft, attentive light that contradicted her pensive expression. She furrowed her eyebrows. There was a familiar, palpable reservation about Umbri’s account, but she didn’t act on it. Instead, she nodded rhythmically and maintained her silence.

“But after I joined the Academy, things got better. I may not have had many friends, but they were good ones. I chose Security because I want to dedicate my life to protecting the people I love. I also studied Music Composition and piano during my time at the Academy. You’ll quickly find that music is a pretty big part of who I am. I don’t know what I’d do without it. And that’s all the basic info for you,” she said.

After she finished speaking, Umbri was absolutely shocked. She hadn’t been that open about her life in a while, plus she got through it all without stuttering once. Perhaps being on the USS Chernov would be a good thing for her.

OOC: Sorry that turned out so long, lol. I have a little too much fun creating characters sometimes.

OOC: Not at all! Feel free to write as much or as little as you’d like. :)

T’Aria absorbed her words, allowing silence to consume her for several heartbeats. There was an evident rawness surrounding Umbri’s estranged family, but she knew better than to mention it. After all, she was a physician, not a counsellor.

Emerging from the brig, T’Aria surveyed the corridor and turned to the left. If Zayne studied the ship before boarding, she might recognise this as the path toward Chernov’s brig. Otherwise, it was relatively indistinct from any other hall. “I appreciate your candour,” she began earnestly. “How do you anticipate your history will impact your work?”

‘Now that’ll be much easier for me to answer,’ Umbri thought. “Well, all of that mess has had a major impact on my social skills. I’m not very good with making friends or forming relationships in general. I tend to bury myself in my work and when I’m not working, music is my solace. But I’ve been told by many instructors that I’m very efficient and resilient when it comes to this line of work, and one instructor even said I do well as a peacemaker in conflicts. But regardless, I want you to know that I will always strive to give you one-hundred percent in everything I do. That’s a promise,” she said.

OOC: Posting again just to make sure we don’t lose this thread.

OOC: Thank you! Fun fact… Threads typically ‘disappear’ after seven days, but they’re always accessible through character profiles and the ‘in topic’ / ‘posted since’ toggles at the top of the boards. The latter will give you a list of all the posts made since, say, a week or a year ago. The former is a little more specific. :)

T’Aria released a soft, supportive hum. Intimately aware of her tendency to appear detached and callous, she strived to embrace a more pacific bearing. And it worked— somewhat. Hooking her hands against her spine, T’Aria considered the strengths Umbri prescribed herself. Conflict management, timeliness, efficiency and resilience. She took a mental note to assign the Ensign to roles that applied those skills and some that challenged them.

“I will hold you to that promise,” T’Aria assured, “but, I am less concerned with your performance than your growth.” Her words tapered to a halt before she continued. “Tell me about your aspirations. What do you wish to gain from this assignment?”

OOC: Thanks for the memo! Considering it’s been quite some time since I was last on STF (I left before the transfer to the new site, too), I’ll likely need a lot of refreshers on posting logistics. And as a side note, this is my first time playing a Security Officer, so I’ll be studying the STF Security Academy course quite a bit.

Umbri felt a lot of tension leave her once she felt like she had the XO’s support. “Well, this is my first assignment since I graduated from the Academy, so I know that I still have much to learn. So the first goal I have is to grow as much as possible in my abilities. I’m fine when it comes to weapons, although I might need some extra training when it comes to the larger ones. As for stuff like martial arts, I learned during my time in the Academy that my biggest weakness is anticipating my opponent’s actions. Also, the fact that I’m insanely skinny puts me at a bit of a disadvantage as far as strength is concerned,” Umbri paused for a moment, thinking about what other goals she could make for herself.

“My other goal is to just get more comfortable being around my fellow crewmates. I don’t want my past to haunt me for the rest of my life, and I think forcing myself to be around people and get to know them will really help me with that. Besides, constantly burying myself in my work isn’t a healthy way to live at all. I need to find a balance between my work life and my personal life,” she said.

“Given the means to manipulate stature and weight to your benefit,” T’Aria cast her a flinty glance, “you can mould a limitation into an edge.”

Logic found no enemy in passion nor drive. They were essential to change, to progress, and often wound their way into the motives behind every action (or inaction). Therefore, T’Aria appreciated the introspection and ambition Umbri demonstrated in her response. She was asking a lot of herself, but the Vulcan had reason to believe she would accomplish whatever she put her mind to.

“You’ll work closely with Ensigns Valharra and Gruver. Both are capable officers, who may serve as a sparring partner, asset, or simply a friend in your transition onto the Chernov. I suggest you acquaint them sooner than later.” She hesitated, her breath hitching pensively. “I would also advise consulting our Counsellor, Doctor Dran. She can provide tools to enable your growth, and support you in ways your crewmates and I cannot.”

T’Aria escorted her companion around the bend. Easing to a pause beside a door aptly entitled ‘Armoury’, she nodded to the duty officers and winched her palm to the sensor palm. It illuminated, then forced the doors open once her identity was confirmed. Silently, she gestured to Umbri to follow her inside. There, she would discover an index of neatly stacked armaments. Racked, labelled and routinely catalogued, it was both accessible and efficient.

“This is Chernov’s armoury. It’s accessible to Command, Department Heads and Security. Once your DNA has been uploaded to the system, you will join that pool.” T’Aria briefly explained. “We have several weapons lockers scattered about the ship to ensure every crewmember is armed in case of emergency, which you’ll encounter on intial patrols. What are your thoughts, thus far?”

— T’Aria, XO
