When Umbri awoke the next morning, she figured it was a good time to get her boarding physical out of the way now that she had gotten settled in. Upon entering Sickbay, she saw yet another Vulcan. But it wasn’t Kastarak or T’Aria, which left her to assume it was the CMO. ‘Third Vulcan I’ve run into so far. That’s a little wild,’ she thought. Umbri walked a little further and made her presence known. “Um, hi. I’m Ensign Umbri Zayne, the new Security Officer. I got here yesterday, and I figured I’d go ahead and knock out my boarding physical,” she said.

Bump

Sitting at his office desk in front of the new Ensign, the sleek visage of Lieutenant Symar, the Chernov‘s Chief Medical Officer, looked up and stood, “Greetings Ensign,” he said, “I trust you are well today?”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Umbri nodded. “Yes, I’m quite well. I slept better than I have in a while last night. I’ve got a bunkmate as well: Ensign Kastarak. We seem to be getting along nicely, so that’s good,” she said.

“This is agreeable,” Symar said with no hint of a change in tone, “Please take a seat on the biobed behind you while I perform a general scan.”

OOC: Up to you what you want me to find. :)

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Umbri nodded, taking a seat on the biobed. Admittedly, she was a little nervous about the scan. Her history with her parents had many repercussions for her mental health and she resorted to self-harm during her first year and a half at the Academy. Umbri was very fortunate that two of her friends at the Academy figured out what was going on and got her the help she needed. But thanks to a few relapses over the past two years, she’s not out of the woods just yet. All of the injuries have scarred over time, but the marks on her arms are certain to warrant some questions from the CMO. But Umbri won’t keep anything from him or from the Counselor when she talks with her later. If she wants to move on from her past, she has to be honest about it first.

As Zayne rolled up her sleeves to reveal a series of what looked like scarred-over cuts running up and down her arms, Symar reached for the dermal regenerator, “Ensign,” he asked, “How long have you been scarring yourself in this way?”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Umbri took a deep breath. “I won’t lie to you whatsoever, Lieutenant. You deserve to know everything. A few months before I joined the Academy, my parents and I got into a huge fight after I revealed certain religious beliefs that they definitely didn’t approve of. Those religious beliefs have remained the same as of now, but I’m not exactly comfortable with going into detail about them just yet. It tends to rub a lot of people the wrong way back on Earth, and it was enough for my parents to decide to completely and utterly cut me off. Fortunately, I had paid my way into the Academy in full beforehand, knowing how my parents would react once I told them. Of course, I hoped that wouldn’t be the reaction because parents are supposed to support you no matter what. But knowing my parents and what they believed in, I knew that it wasn’t going to end well. A few months after that, I joined the Academy and changed my name at the same time. Carolyn Hawkins is my birth name, but as you can imagine, I wanted a fresh start. Of course, those events had a very negative impact on my mental health and I ended up resorting to self-harm during my first year and a half at the Academy. Eventually, two of my friends figured out what was going on, staged an intervention, and took me to get help on campus. I’m very thankful for them because if they hadn’t done that, things probably would have gotten a lot worse for me. But my recovery process certainly hasn’t been perfect due to a few relapses I’ve had over the past two years. And before you ask, I intend to schedule regular sessions with Counselor Dran. I really want to move on from my past, and I feel like being on the USS Chernov will help me with that. Everyone I’ve met so far has been unbelievably welcoming to me as it is,” Umbri paused, sighing.

“But you’re the second person I’ve really shared my history with. I told Lt. Commander T’Aria yesterday since she’s my superior officer, but not in as much detail as I’ve just told you, and I honestly feel kind of guilty for that. I wanted to be as honest with her as I’m being with you, but I was scared. I was nervous about telling you, don’t get me wrong, but I knew that considering your position, the best thing for me to do was just suck it up and do it. I apologize for any burden I might have caused you. I just feel like you have a right to know,” she said. ‘Yeah, I should probably take advantage of Kastarak’s offer soon. I’m in desperate need of meditation right now,’ Umbri thought, looking down and moving her fingers as if she was at the piano, playing Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp Minor. It was one of the pieces that never failed to ease her nerves.

Symar thought for a second before replying, “Have you been to our new counsellor yet Ensign?”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Umbri shook her head. “Not yet. I’m planning on paying her a visit as soon as I get done here. I want to get as much as I can done before I begin my first shift tomorrow,” she said.

Symar inclined his head, as if nodding, “You will permit me to liase with her on what I have found here today?”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Umbri nodded. “Yes, of course. I’ll take any help I can get,” she said. Umbri had a feeling she would get along very well with Lt. Symar. They seemed to very much be on the same wavelength.

Symar made a note on his PADD to speak with the new Counsellor as soon as he was available, “I am planning to introduce a group meditation session for the Vulcan members of the crew currently going through the Pon Farr, though I believe that it may be beneficial for you to take part as well, if this is something you’d be interested in?”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

‘Ok, that’s creepy. I feel like he read my mind for a second there,’ Umbri thought. “That is something I’m definitely interested in. I meditate very frequently, plus I tend to be on the same wavelength with Vulcans. And if nothing else, it’ll help me get to know some of my fellow crewmates. I’m not very good at making friends, you see,” she said.

“I have found,” Symar noted down Zayne on his list of potential attendees for the meditation group, “That younger humans who are not used to being in more than one environment for long periods. Perhaps it would be beneficial for you to enage in as much social mixing with the rest of the crew as you can?”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“That sounds like an excellent idea. It’ll probably be a lot healthier than confining myself in my room with my music whenever I’m not burying myself in my work. Along with Security, I also studied Music Composition and piano while I was at the Academy. Music is my solace, but it can make me forget about the world around me. Sometimes that can be a bad thing,” Umbri said with a laugh.

“Research suggests that music can be a helpful addition to meditation,” Symar intoned, “Perhaps your compositions would be a logical addition to the sessions?”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Umbri hadn’t considered that before, but Lt. Symar certainly was onto something. “I’m surprised I never considered that approach before. I think it would be a very logical addition to the sessions. Music is a universal language after all,” she said.
