It was a mere 12 hours before Chris had to send not only a medical team down to the planet, but a security detachment as well. Since his loyal friend Mwezi was now dead, he needed to fill the role of Chief of Security. He’d put it off for way longer than he should and turned to toggle the comms. [O] Ensign Valharra. Report to the Captain’s ready room on the double. [O]

[0] “Roger that, Captain, on my way.”[0] Ensign Valharra responded to the comm. He then walked with a fast pace through the ship from the brig to the Captain’s ready room. He was worried he was in trouble for something he did during the away mission, but he couldn’t think of anything he did wrong, he even helped coach the new security officer that was added to the party at the last minute, so this being a meeting for something he did wrong was improbable, and illogical. He stood outside the door for the beep that let’s the Captain know he was there. “Ensign Valharra, reporting as ordered, Sir.” He said after the beep.
Ensign Valharra, Security.

“Come!” Chris said as he was standing in front of his desk with a brown wooden box about the size of 8 inches squared and 4 inches thick in his hand. When Ensign Valharra got close to him he looked him dead in the eye with his one piercing blue eye. “At ease Ensign. I want to first let you know that you are not in trouble and you are free to speak your mind in this office and well, anywhere for that matter. I value that honesty in any being no matter how misguided, ill informed or correct that they might be. Honesty.” He shook his head from side to side. “No. Integrity. It the single most important attribute and officer should possess. Especially security officers. I was going to present this to Lt. Mwezi once we were done at his homeward of Galdor. It was supposed to be a memento of sorts because I had a feeling that he would not be returning to the ship with us after we helped rescue his mate as a way of remembering us. A moment if you will. As you can see I was correct about him not returning to the Chernov but under different circumstances. Therefore I am giving it to you. It will stand for something else now. It will stand a symbol of your authority on this vessel and away from it. Only one of the items in this box you can wear on your uniform. The other when you are not. You can choose which one I am talking about after you open it.”

Chris walked up to Ensign Valharra and gave him the box. “Use it wisely and wield it with wisdom.” Chris stepped back to the front of his desk which was about six paces away and smiled. “You are hereby promoted to the rank of Lieutenant J.G. and are now the new Chief of Security for the USS Chernov. What do you have to say for yourself Lieutenant T’Kul Valharra. You can open the box now or later Valharra.”

If Valharra opened the box, he would noticed that it was lined with green felt and inside contained his rank, a sheriffs star that said USS Chernov on the top and Chief of Security on the bottom with the word SHERIFF written in the middle. There was also a finely crafted black leather holster with intricate designs on it and a smaller sheriff star on the side. Inside the holster was a black single action revolver from the 1870’s which was a replica of the original and it had ivory handles. Next to that was 6 .45 caliber rounds.

Ensign Valharra now Lieutenant was taken aback. He was just told about what happened to Lt. Mwezi and why he wasn’t coming back to the ship in the mission debriefing, and hadn’t really even considered who would replace him. “I’m honored Sir, I won’t let you down.” He responded to the captain as he opened the case and saw the Sheriff badges and gun. “I think Lt. Mwezi really would have enjoyed this, and likewise, I will cherish this in his memory as well, that’s the most logical thing I can think to do.” He continued as he just stared at the contents of the box. He looked up at the captain. “But, Sir, if I may, I know you and him were close, how are you doing?” He asked the captain. He knew what it felt like to lose everyone when he went through the black hole and can possibly never go home again, he was struggling to keep his emotions in check as he spoke.
