T’Aria fell into step beside him and shifted into a peaceful silence. Occasionally, when she thought he wasn’t looking, she stole a glance from passersby to Symar. But her conscience caught the gesture before she gambled a stare. Minuted transpired before she spoke, “I understand you have a specialty in physical and psychiatric trauma. Have you entertained research on the subject?”

— T’Aria, XO

Symar gave a small inclination of his head, “Before joining the Academy, I was a junior member of the Vulcan Medical Research Council, working under Doctor T’Vara, a trauma expert who had been Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Simone, before returning to Vulcan to serve as a trauma surgeon. Studying with him directly in the field allowed me to come up with treatments that were not always the conventional way of doing things.

“Fascinating,” T’Aria murmured as fine, reflective lines gathered at her temples. She held standard therapies to be absolute and exclusive, and often used them to ‘weed-out’ ineffective treatments. So, when Symar mentioned alternative therapies, T’Aria could help but find her curiosity piqued. “What was one of the treatments you pioneered?”

— T’Aria, XO

Symar paused, as if reflecting on something, “Unfortunately, the trauma research facility was destroyed in an attack by the Klingons, all my research was… lost when the facility was hit by a Klingon photon torpedo.”

T’Aria adopted a serene cast and moved with a gentle, resolute mien that shook the irksome pang from her gut. Though she didn’t consider herself sentimental, there was no denying the strange sensation that troubled her when confronted with notions of loss. Dismissing it as a subject of later reflection, she bowed her head to Symar. “I imagine the event was…” she searched for a word devoid of emotional essence, “disconcerting.”

Easing to a halt before the turbolift, T’Aria watched as the doors slid open to reveal a hurried Ensign who rushed past the second his feet touched the corridor. Curiously quirking a brow, T’Aria glanced at Symar and gestured him inside.

— T’Aria, XO

Symar inclined his head in thanks and glidestepped into the turbolift, “Forgive me for such a personal question, but did you lose anyone during the initial attacks?” The Vulcan CMO caught himself momentarily as the emotional weight of the question hit him momentarily, before sinking back to the pit of his stomach.

“You may ask me anything,” T’Aria assured, in part to quell the sorrow that pierced her heart, “deck 4.” Ensared by the silence that swelled and receded between them, she considered his question. Like many, she lost the bulk of her clan to Nero’s vengeance, many whose harrowed katras she feared would roam the cosmos endlessly. But of those departed, few had disturbed her so profoundly as her twin. “T’Lyra,” the name slipped her tongue after seconds of quiet rumination, “my twin and—in many ways—my friend.”

A volatile and troubled child, T’Aria sought comfort in her sister’s presence and embrace. She was stoic in manner, perfectly poised, but she nurtured their bond without convicting her twin’s fiery nature. And where T’Lyra was benevolent and judicious, T’Aria was protective and resolute. She cared and fought for her sister, distance be damned as the humans would say. But it’d been five years—1,869 days—since she’d felt her sister’s presence. And it’d been a sensation of peace.

T’Aria’s inner turmoil never touched her serene face. Glancing at Symar, she returned the question. “May I ask the same of you?”

— T’Aria, XO

“I am… sorry for the loss you hace faced,” Symar’s face remained neutral, “My family was… fortunate enough to be off world at the time of the attack, I was on Earth preparing for my first Starfleet assignment.”
