Umbri took a look around the Armory, taking note of where everything was. “You guys clearly aren’t messing around when it comes to organization, which I definitely appreciate. Besides that, I don’t think I have anything else to add. You’ve answered all the questions I was going to ask, but I’ll certainly let you know if any more come up. Was there anything else you wanted to speak to me about?” she asked.

“Disorder is the prelude to disaster,” T’Aria wore a trace frown, “and we endure enough mayhem than to encourage it ourselves.” Sobriety troubled her words, but if the stoicism were to wither from her face, they might’ve carried a laughable tune. “No, you’ve demonstrated both competence and potential,” she assured, “but if you’ll accompany me back to the brig, I know of a few shipwide opportunities that might interest you.”

— T’Aria, XO

Umbri perked up at T’Aria’s words. “I’m certainly intrigued. Lead the way,” she said.

T’Aria slipped from the Armoury and tossed the attending officers a curt, appreciative nod. “I understand you’re musically inclined,” she reflected. “Do you enjoy playing with others?”

– T’Aria, XO

Umbri eagerly nodded. “Absolutely. It’s not an exaggeration when I say that music is my heart and soul. I can’t imagine where I’d be without it. I love collaborating with others, and will gladly jump at any opportunity to do so. Making music with other people is one of the most enriching experiences a person can have in my opinion because music is a universal language. It never fails to touch one’s soul in one way or another,” she said.

“A poetic way of putting it,” T’Aria tilted her head, “but I concur. You may find joy in Crewman Sega’a’s ‘jam sessions’. They are a relatively new installation, and I’ve not had the opportunity to attend, but I hear they are… entertaining. If you’re interested, I can point you in the good Chef’s direction?”

— T’Aria, XO

Umbri’s eyes lit up. “I would absolutely love that. It’ll be a great space for me to work on the piano piece I’ve been writing,” she said.

“Wonderful. Chef Sega’a dwells primarily in the galley and private mess,” T’Aria rounded the corner into the corridor that housed the brig, “but I suspect you’ll have better luck with the former.” She eased to a halt before turning to Umbri. “When you’re comfortable with your piece,” she added somewhat indirectly, “I wouldn’t be opposed to hearing it.”

Umbri halted with T’Aria, smiling when the XO said she’d be open to hearing her piece when completed. It made her want to work extra hard to make it the best it can be.

Dismissing her comment with an idle flick of her wrist, T’Aria glanced between Umbri and the brig. “Do you have any lingering questions or comments regarding your position aboard Chernov?”

— T’Aria, XO

Umbri thought for a moment. “This is my first position on a ship. Do you have any advice that you could give me?” she asked.

Ensign Umbri Zayne, Security

“Compassion,” T’Aria hummed after several heartbeats of silent rumination. “In our endeavours, we will encounter both the wonderous and horrific. Some experiences will tempt you to neglect your humanity—to turn it off—so you don’t get hurt. But I advise you maintain your compassion. It is our strongest, most resilient trait and it can help us as much as it can someone else.”

— T’Aria, XO

Umbri was admittedly a little surprised to hear that kind of advice from a Vulcan, but it was still good advice, especially for her. She nodded. “If you gave me that advice when I was in the Academy, I imagine I would’ve seriously struggled with that. I used to have a very bad habit of closing myself off from other people because I thought I couldn’t trust anyone. After what happened with my family, I was constantly afraid that anyone I got close to would just stab me in the back. But I realized that it was insanely unhealthy for me to go through life like that. I still might not be the greatest at social interaction, but I will always strive to treat everyone I come across with the respect and dignity that they deserve. You never know what someone might be going through at the time,” she said.

Bump

Her lips parted, heavy and ponderous, only to surrender her breath to a knowing nod. Umbri spoke volumes. She respected her attitude—her drive and humility. “I have no doubt you’ll propser aboard Chernov,” T’Aria admitted, “but my door is open to you whenever, for whatever.”

T’Aria furrowed her eyebrows, simmering on a thought before adding… “Have you had the opportunity to consult Dr. Symar or Dr. Dran?”

— T’Aria, XO

Umbri shook her head. “Not yet, but I intend to do so after a good night’s rest. I’m definitely taking care of my boarding physical tomorrow, and I’ll stop by Dr. Dran’s office whenever she has an opening,” she said.

“Understood,” T’Aria conceded. “Report back tomorrow at 1600hrs for beta shift. Until then…” she bowed in place of a handshake, “…welcome to the Chernov.”

— T’Aria

Umbri nodded, giving a salute. “Roger that, Lt. Commander,” she said as she went on her way.
