“Understood.” T’Aria hummed, idly tapping her fingers against her hip in silent rumination. She considered the Flight Officer’s concerns but sincerely doubted they required any immediate intervention. The Vulcan assumed she’d soon find out. “Keep me apprised of your status. T’Aria, out.”

T’Aria relived her thumb from the comm panel and tossed a fleeting glance at the nearest chronometer. 14:53. There wasn’t much time, but enough to stop by and check in on Security before the shift change. Taking in a soft breath, T’Aria fell in line behind a group of mismatched officers.

Not her brightest moment.

The ride was—thankfully—short and uneventful. Well, as uneventful as packing four off duty Ensigns and Vulcan into a turbolift can be. It’s safe to say T’Aria wasn’t opposed to having the nearer stop. Bidding them farewell, she stepped from the ‘lift and swiftly made her way to the Brig.

(OOC: A little shorter, given time constraints, but feel free to add in a little chaos!)

Umbri was diligently working at her station in the brig when she saw the XO walk in. Unaware that she would be making this visit, the Ensign shot up from her desk and gave a salute. “Lt. Commander, I wasn’t expecting you. Is there anything I can help you with?” she asked.

“At ease, Ensign.” T’Aria lifted a dismissive hand, an easy expression touching her face as Umbri rose and saluted. “Yes…” she thought to mention her motive but subdued it long enough to consider Zayne. “Tell me about your past few weeks aboard Chernov. How are you settling in?”

— T’Aria, XO

Umbri relaxed, feeling T’Aria’s calm presence. “I’ve been settling in quite well. I’ve got a bunkmate: Ensign Kastarak. He’s also Vulcan, and he’s a Medical JO. We seem to be getting along fine. I also met Lt. Symar, the CMO, and Lt. Valharra, the Chief of Security. Forgive me if this comes across the wrong way, but I find it a little funny that you, my bunkmate, the CMO, and my commanding officer are all Vulcans. It’s certainly made it easier for me to put myself out there, though,” Umbri paused as she leaned on her desk. “I still have yet to meet the Captain, though. I’m honestly a little nervous about that encounter. Is there any advice you could give me?” she asked.

Chernov appears to harness certain ‘magnetic’ properties where Vulcans are concerned,” T’Aria mused. There was a time when she, a young and dagger-eyed Ensign, struggled to navigate a shipload of illogical humans. The memory plagued her mind like a nightmare. Although Chernov remained a chaotic force-to-be-reckoned-with, T’Aria didn’t find her nearly as unsettling. Perhaps she changed–though she couldn’t say whether it was for the better. “Be authentic,” she dismissed her thoughts in a hum. “Captain Taggart is your most senior officer, but he is human. Treat him as such.”

T’Aria mulled over her question a second longer, “what worries you about the encounter?”

— T’Aria, XO

Umbri thought about it for a moment. “I’ve heard rumors that he can be a little strict, and I really don’t want to leave a bad first impression on him,” she said.

“A ‘bad’ impression is a matter of perception,” T’Aria mused. “We cannot control nor account for what another might think of us. But,” she pursed her lips, “it might be worthwhile to prepare ideas of what you think you would do if you were to greet the Captain.” Considering Umbri a moment, she added: “What would you say?”

— T’Aria, XO

Umbri thought for a little bit before making her response. “I’d probably give him a simple salute, followed by formally introducing myself. Then I’d promise to always come into work willing to give one-hundred percent, whatever that may be. How does that sound?” she asked.

“I am confident Captain Taggart will value your ambition and eagerness,” T’Aria assured. “But promises tend to be hollow without action. In the most likely scenario, you will encounter the Captain in an emergency. Instead of saying you will remain steadfast and loyal, show it.

“Should you see an unattended task,” she took in a pensive breath, “offer to lend your expertise. Otherwise, a ‘where do you need me?’ can be profound.”

T’Aria, though tempted to pose another question, resolved to fall quiet and allow Umbri a chance to voice her thoughts or questions.

— T’Aria

Umbri nodded, satisfied with the advice T’Aria had given her. “I’d say that sounds pretty good. Thank you,” Umbri paused, realizing that the XO probably didn’t just come here to chat. “I suppose you’re here for departmental inspections. I’m not sure where Lt. Valharra is at the moment, but I can show you around if you’d like,” she said.
