As the ensign went to the mess hall, he was wondering what was going on with his life. He then realized that he was doing the right thing. Serving starfleet and the Federation. He knew that it was a good thing for him. He realized that it was something that was nessarry for him to do.

Ensign Applegate.

Sega’a lounged at a table beside the window, a cup of Janaran tea warming his hands. He hadn’t intended to move from his perch for a very long time. But, when a new face meandered into the mess hall, Sega’a couldn’t help but give in to the curiosity. He set his cup aside, rose and tugged his uniform taut, and wandered over to Applegate’s table.

“Hey there,” he greeted with a broad smile, “I couldn’t help but notice you’re sitting alone. Care for some company?”

— Sega’a

“Oh please. By all means. I’m Applegate. Todd Applegate or Shocker if you want to call me but that is what you can call me. Up too you.” As he allowed Sega’a to sit down. He smiled as he invited him to sit.

Ensign Applegate.

“Sega’a…” he plopped down and extended a large, calloused hand across the table. “I cannot say that I’ve seen you around—not near the galley, anyway. Where do you work?”

— Sega’a

“I work on the bridge as communications officer. What about you Sega’a? Where do you work at?” As he shook his hand. “This is the first time for me being here.”

Ensign Applegate

“A communications officer, eh?” Sega’a lifted his eyebrows with a slight, surprised smile. Anyone who could master the ever-evolving and ever-complexing science of linguistics deserved his utmost respect. “Why linguistics?” He asked before Todd’s question met his ears. “I’m officially the ‘Captain’s Yeoman’, but I tend to focus on stewardship and hospitality services. If you need something done that doesn’t require a genius, I’m your person.”

— Sega’a

“Yes. I am a communications. Sadly enough an Ensign. I am more then willing to ask you anything cause to be honest I’m only new to this.” As the ensign told Sega’a and is very surprised about it. He just thought about making friends and what not and get to know Sega’a.

Ensign Applegate.

Ngokav sensed the surprise emanating from Todd. Did I say something wrong? He chewed on his cheek and considered the young Ensign across from him. Unnerved him? Sega’a dismissed the thought when Todd suggested he was an open book. Surely, that meant he was at least amenable to his company. ‘At least’ was enough for him!

“Same here,” Sega’a assured without visible hesitation. “So… where are you from?”

— Sega’a

“Originally from earth but from Vulcan. Why?” He said.

Ensign Todd

“Where a person’s from can say a lot about their character,” he mused and took a sip of his tea. “What is your fondest memory of Vulcan?”

— Sega’a

“How to supress the feelings and everything. You know.” He said to Sega’a. Smiling while saying it.

Ensign Todd

“I cannot say that I do,” Sega’a wore an easy smile. “I would love to hear more about your time on Vulcan. What led you there?”

— Sega’a

“Well Sega’a. It’s a very long story about it. But I can give you a much more short version of it.” He mentioned.

Ensign Todd

Kastarak had been standing at the galley, getting his food (once again, it was baked potato, drenched in oil, no seasoning, and a hot (in temperature, it was bland in seasoning) plomeek broth as a side dish), while overhearing the conversation between Crewman Sega’a and Ensign Applegate. He understood that ensign Applegate had lived on Vulcan – his home planet, and this roused an interest, for Kastarak, in this human ensign.

He walked to the table where they sat.

“Ensign Applegate, Crewman Sega’a,” he said, greeting the people sitting there. He did not ask for permission to sit down, it was a canteen after all, and there was a spare seat where he could sit. Collegial eating ewas to be expected, nothing to be given permission about. That would be illogical. If people wished for private eating, they would, logic would dictate, go somewhere private.

“It is agreeable to eat with you,” he said once sat down with his colleagues. “Mr Sega’a and I are friends, and I could not help but overhear you, Mr Applegate, saying that you have lived on Vulcan. It should not come as any surprise to you that I too have lived on Vulcan.”

He then took a bite of his oil-drenched baked potato, and started chewing rigorously. Then he drank a glass of water, listening in on how the conversation continued.

– Dr/Ens Kastarak

“Hello doc. I am. I was actually originally on earth but my parents were killed. Someone from the Vulcan high command came by and had taken me as one of theirs. I did everything like the kholinear studies.” He said as he noticed that the doctor sat down.

Applegate

Kastarak listened carefully. For someone who was raised by Vulcans on Vulcan, Applegate was a constant smiler. Whenever Kastarak saw him, Applegate was smiling. It made Applegate look, in Kastarak’s view, approachable, kind, warm, sweet, and sympathetic. Was it perhaps Applegate’s way of “passing” as a human? To find a way to prove his humanness? Would other humans consider Applegate odd, having been raised in the Vulcan ways?

“How old were you?” he asked.

“I was 12. It was hard that my family had died, but with the help of the Vulcan High Command, they were able to help me with everything.” He said.

It was curious that Vulcans had enrolled the little human in studying Kolinahr. It seemed cruel too. Kastarak did not say anything, he did not wish to seem judgmental. He was curious about this Vulcan-raised human. Perhaps he would be a new friend one day, too?

– Dr/Ens Kastarak

“If you have read the history Michael Burnham lost her parents and she was on Vulcan to do the same thing.” He said. As he knew what it was like to lose family to the Klingons.

Applegate

Kastarak went over what Applegate had said. Applegate’s parents had been killed. And while he had not heard of Michael Burnham, Kastarak knew that there were humans on Vulcan, and that some, indeed, lived among Vulcans. He had never heard of Vulcans raising human children though, but it did not seem unlikely. Humans were Vulcans’ most intimate friends, as a species, and the one with which Vulcans had had the best relationship with. Despite their tremendous differences, Vulcan society and human society seemed to have a degree of understanding for one another.

“The Vulcan High Command’s charitable arm stretches a long way,” Kastarak said. “I should like to trade some stories of our Vulcan upbringing at some point. Feel free to come by my room any time when we both are free. Perhaps we will find solidarity with one another, and a way for us, perhaps, to put our experiences into context.”

– Ensign/Dr Kastarak

“That I would agree doc. Always willing to do so. In fact Michael Burnham was aboard the Discovery. Her parents was killed and Ambassador Sarek and Amanda, are her foster parents. It’s in starfleet history and records.” He said to the doctor. He was just thinking that it’ll be a good little homework for him.

Applegate

“I look forward to it,” replied Kastarak, sure also to look into other humans raised by Vulcans. But more importantly for Kastarak was the potential of making a new friend from his home planet.

– Dr Kastarak

“I agree doc,” he replied. Applegate could use a new friend himself. He was very surprised.
