After finishing off with the xo they were back in the lift again. “The Yeoman said casually. “We are going to get your physical done so that part is finished.” she said quickly then she added. “The chief medical officer is Symar and the jo officer there is Kastarak he is a doctor and counselor. I am not sure who is there currently but they are fast reliable and competent officers. they all are, all of them. ” She said with a smile and confidence. As they walked down the corridor of deck five as she pointed out some of the areas there. This is auxiliary control as she pointed as they walked along with assorted crew quarters. Along with docking ports one and two which are opposite of one another further down the deck. Primary computer core level 3 along with crew lounges and of course sickbay as the doors opened to the medical section as they casually moved to the medical officer’s office. As they waited at the reception desk to check-in Pawl. As she talked to the nurse briefly. as she got up and got the doctor on duty. As the yeoman pointed to a chair. “You are more than welcome to have a seat it could take a minute or so for the nurse to find the officer.” Yeoman said calmly. Pawl took a seat calmly as they waited for them.

Lt Jg Pawl Batario - Jo Engineer

It was Nurse Zhang Jingjing that had welcomed Lt Batario, and she fetched Kastarak.

Kastarak came quickly, he only did some paperwork, and looked forward to the interruption of some social interaction with a new crew member.

“Peace and long life,” Kastarak greeted Batario. “I understand you are Mr Batario. I am ensign Kastarak, physician and counsellor. Please follow me for a medical and psychological interview, and after that, Nurse Zhang will, with your consent, take some tests.”

Kastarak led Batario to his office. It was one of the few offices in Sickbay with a window. It showed the stars outside. Had the office been on the other side of the ship, they would have seen Risa.

“Please sit down,” he said as he sat down himself. There were two armchairs by the window, facing one another. Kastarak sat himself down in one to the right.

“I will conduct an interview with you regarding your somatic and psychological health. I will begin with broad questions, and then, depending on what you report, I might have more follow-up questions. Please answer as truthfully as you can, to the best of your memory. I will only break patient confidentiality if there is a medical threat to the ship. If I find that you are fit for duty, or if I find that you are not fit for duty, I will first inform you of that and then inform your department head, the first officer and the commanding officer of the conclusion of my findings, but I will not share any medical or psychological details, unless I have to, for the safety of the crew, or under other areas of Federation law. Before we begin, do you have any questions for me?”

– Ensign Dr/Cns Kastarak

Pawl looked as a Vulcan officer approached as he heard his name. As he stood quietly and followed the officer. pawl followed as he was asked to take a seat. He did so quietly. Pawl listened quietly without interruption to the doctor. Pawl took all he had heard in as he digested all the information. “Yes, doctor I do understand.” Pawl finally spoke. and then fell silent again. He was not sure what to say after all the information he gathered from the doctor’s rant. “I guess I am ready Doctor,” Pawl said quickly.

Kastarak nodded.

“I understand it is a lot. You’ve only just arrived.”

He paused, allowing Batario to get comfortable.

“How are you today?”

– Ensign Dr/Cns Kastarak

Pawl was comfortable he knew what to expect and what was going to happen as he listened to the officer. “I am fine Doctor. please proceed.” Looking at the Vulcan noting the mental disciplining the officer had along with the telepathy. But he did not mention this fact to him. He closed his eyes a moment before reopening them. As he casually looked about the area.

Lt Jg Pawl Batario - Jo Engineer

In front of Kastarak sat the young Betazoid officer (well, slightly older than Kastarak being 2 years his senior). He had read up on Batario’s file before sitting down with him. What Kastarak remembered mostly was that Batario was a triplet, being born the same time as his two brothers. He also had a sister.

Kastarak had also read up on Betazoid physiology, which was somewhat new to him. Last it was covered was three years ago in Star Fleet Academy during residency, when they had had one Betazoid patient. Physiologically speaking, they were very similar to humans, which would have reflected similar evolutionary pressures on Earth as on Betazed, however, there is usually possibility for telepathy among Betazoids, centred in the paracortex and governed by psilosynine. High levels of psilosynine would indicate high potential for telepathy, and low levels of psilosynine low potentials for the same. After a period of heavy use of telepathy, psiolsynine would be depleted and recovery needed before psilosynine would be evened out. Kastarak decided that the tests for psilosynine would be necessary, to compare with Betazoid standards (which were rather difficult to come by). Betazoids’ telepathic skills were also much more developed and compex than Vulcans, and this too needed to be addressed in the interview.

However, Kastarak decided he needed to start with more simple questions.

“You are fine,” Kastarak said, to indicate he had understood Mr Batario. “Please begin with summarizing your medical history. Any chronic health conditions, psychological or somatic? Any history of surgery or illnesses? Any allergies or hypersensitive reactions? Any dietary requirements?”

– Ensign Kastarak (Dr/Cns)

Pawl listened to the doctor as he started the questions. “Well, no chronic conditions! not sure on the psychological side other than personal issues due to the family being extremely xenophobic. No broken bones or scars but I had my fair share of twisted ankles.” Pawl said trying to be efficient in getting the answers out. “I guess mild depression from feeling isolated from family and lack of finding a companion to be part of my life. or lover.” Pawl said with a straight face.

Lt Jg Pawl Batario - Jo Engineer

Mr Batario – Kastarak thought – was honest and upright about the isolation from his family, the struggles in the family, but also it seemed like he was missing his family. Was it a nuanced or a split image of his family that he had? Mr Batario also seemed lonely, having looked for a companion or lover, but not found so, which he has linked to feeling mildy depressed. Moreover, Kastarak noted the straight face. Did he try to mirror Vulcan behaviour, or is the emotionality of the family so strong that he needs to put on a straight face to keep himself composed? Is it a way to distance himself from his feelings, and not recognize their power over him? There were many questions to explore.

“I appreciate your honesty, Mr Batario,” said Kastarak, careful to put on voice that sounded soothing, calm, and understanding. “Tell me more about your family and how being away from them affects you. What are you thinking when you think of your family? What feelings follow?”

He would follow-up with more questions about the self-diagnosed depression if enough did not come up in the conversation. He would also bring up the loneliness from being without a companion, unless Mr Batario would go there himself.

– Ensign Dr/Cns Kastarak
“Well, most of my family are opposed to Joining the federation. there are truly xenophobic in nature but they’re not violent. mostly the elders are opposed to it my parents and grandparents my great grandparents are more open. As for the newer generation there more open to the idea of being part of the federation. for security and advantages for the future of the betazoid race as a whole.” Pawl said with a polite smile. “Well, I miss being with my brothers since were all so close to one another but were doing good so far. My sister we get along pretty well but its almost a fighting match with the rest of them. currently. We are not really on speaking terms with most of the family. others of the family are split over this aunts and uncles even some cousins too.” Pawl finished. “Mostly I worry about my brothers. since there still home on betazed or one of her moons that are class m. where my family can still cause issues for them.” Pawl said calmly as he finished his answers. “My loneliness is from lack of finding the right man to be part of my life. Before you ask I am gay.” Pawl said not being ashamed of it. ” but others are not accepting of it at times or there is disdain or even hatred of me because of it. Most humans are now ok with it but there are a few that are throwbacks to the old world. Betazoid is more accepting of this and is not concerned or biased about one of their own being in a relationship with a same-sex partnership or union. love is love.” Pawl said calmly to the doctor not explaining further unless asked to. Knowing full well this might or might not hurt him in the questioning. But Pawl did not worry about anything he knew sooner or later his time will come.

Lt Jg Pawl Batario - Jo Engineer

Kastarak listened with much concentration. When Batario had finished talking, he let two seconds pass, so that he would be sure he was not interrupting him.

“Please correct me if I have interpreted you. When you speak of family, you speak of many people. While your parents, siblings, grandparents and great grandparents are more open of the Federation, others in your extended family are more xenophobic, and this has taken a psychological toll on you. Earlier in your conversation, you expressed your family as extremely xenophobic, and now you tell me that the core family is quite accepting of outsiders. Help me understand what you mean here.”

“You and your two brothers are a set of triplets. You are close to them, but you are split up. One of you is here on this ship, one of them on Betazed, and one of them on an M-class moon close to your homeplanet. You and your sister are also close. You seem confident about your sexuality, though some people that you meet are less accepting of it than you would wish. Yet, I sense that you are lonely. Would you like to tell me more about that?”

– Ensign Dr/Cns Kastarak
