Snip!

Kastarak listened carefully. He had asked Batario of how Batario experiences telepathy, not how his species uses it on a global level. Perhaps Batario had misinterpreted his question, but Kastarak took pains in ensuring that it was asked on an individual level.

He tried again.

“You describe the telepathic abilities of your species quite well, Mr Batario,” said Kastarak, brought back in memory from the cross-species medical classes back in Star Fleet Academy. It was almost as if Batario had read from Kastarak’s course textbook. “I am more interested in you on an individual level, rather than your species on a population level. What is your level of telepathy. How does telepathy affect you?”

This time, Kastarak hoped he would get an answer.

– Ensign Kastarak (Doctor/Counselor)

Pawl was rather confused by the odd question. ” I am fine with my powers. I am a bit higher on the esp scale. They have never failed me.” Pawl said quickly. “I sometimes get raped up in them at times especially getting into music or feeling others’ strong passions.” but I can cut the amount the emotions coming into my mind by adding blocks or mental barriers. Like Vulcans do to block possible intrusions to their mind.” He hoped this clarified things. If not he would consider a mind-meld option for the officer. to help clarify things more with him.

“If I understand correctly then, Mr Batario,” replied Kastarak after a moment of pause, “you do not perceive any difficulties related to your telepathy; your telepathy revolves around sensing and perceiving emotions, especially strong ones, and sometimes it gets a bit too heavy for you, and it is then that you add blocks or mental barriers to lessen the extraneous emotive input. You also feel strong emotions from music, and listening to music can cause you to be extra sensitive to people’s emotions. Have I understood you correctly? Is there something you would like to add, remove or clarify to my summary?”

Kastarak noted that Batario had not mentioned anything about sensing other people’s cognitions or communicating telepathically with other people, and was hoping that Mr Batario would cover that in his reply. This was a formal interview, however, which is why it was important for Kastarak to get so many details as possible in as short time as possible, so that he could declare Batario fit for duty, and allow Batario to serve on board the ship. Kastarak’s duty here was heavy, and he had not even yet come to discuss the physical aspects of the examination.

– Ensign Kastarak (Doctor / Counsellor)

“Only one thing I can add is I can use telepathy when needed to communicate to other telepaths. or possibly a strong psy-active person individual. I can use telepathy with non-psy active individuals it is more difficult but It has been done to help with any misunderstandings. Its not always work depending on the individual but never hurts to try for knowledge’s sake, but my powers are never used on another without their permission unless ordered to. We can sometimes when we find our beloved or imzadi we can sometimes form a link with them or bond that they can feel and hear me too.” Pawl said calmly. He was not expecting a psychological profile along with the true physical. “I other question doctor? when is the physical to begin?” Pawl wondered. “and if you wish to understand more about betazoids you’re more than welcome to mind-meld with me?” Pawl offered the officer. Knowing full well that this will show the officer more of himself and show more of the betazoids from his experiences of his past history that he learned in school. and more about his family and there the social structure of their society he was not going to hide anything from him. etc. “Sometimes spoken language is imprecise or limited to get a full understanding,” Pawl said as he fell silent to see what the officer wished to do now.

Kastarak was taken aback by the suggestion of a mind meld – something so intimate and private to be suggested to openly. On one hand, it cemented Kastarak’s belief in that Mr Batario trusted him and was comfortable in his presence, but Kastarak himself was not comfortable with the idea. He had never engaged in a mind meld before, nor had he ever wanted. He had wanted no one to see his most intimate self, the one thick with trauma, loss, and self-doubt, and he did especially not want to venture in to that realm now – nor could he, for he lacked the technique.

It was also extremely important for Kastarak at this point to keep a rigorous control of his mind and mental processes, lest Pawl might peak inside. Was Kastarak doubting him? No – it wasn’t doubt – but perhaps fear of being intimate. There was a carefreeness, a sense of liberation, of how Pawl behaved and talked, and was so open of it. He had declared quickly and proudly that he was gay, he had suggested a mind meld as if it were as easy as inspecting a lesion on his leg.

Kastarak did not understand his own sexuality. His first pon-farr was induced by the trauma of losing his family and the destruction of his homeplanet, and he did not remember much of it. During his second pon-farr, seven years later, he had randomly harassed both men and women for kal-if-fee, but alas, and this time, too, it was mixed with trauma and feelings. He know he had mated with someone, but he could not remember with whom. He remembered it was a woman who was undergoing a similar pon farr at the same time. He does not remember her name, only her face, her naked body, and the way their bodies interacted while under the blood fever.

At the same time, Batario gave Kastarak conflicted feelings. The man was shorter than him, but in no way smaller. He filled out his clothes handsomely, a pleasant looking face, and he had a similar aura of carefreeness and liberation as Sega’a – the Orion chef on board for whom Kastarak sensed a certain form of attraction (though yet not sure what kind). But it was all different from the emotional bonding he felt with T’Aria after their shared period in quarantine and they touched on the loss of the destruction of their homeplanet and loss of their loved ones. But perhaps that was less attraction and more a sense of siblinghood? Kastarak knew he needed to meditate on all these

As such, Batario conflicted Kastarak. On one hand, Kastarak was intrigued by Batario’s way of being, but on the other, he feared it. He just hoped Batario did not sense it. He purged his own mind quickly, returned to a state of full non-emotion and serenity, and replied to Batario’s suggestion.

“There is no need for a mind meld, but I appreciate your openness and candour. Tell me, have you undergone a mind-meld before? You were willing to suggest one.”

– Ensign Kastarak (Doctor / Counsellor)

PAwl felt a change in the officer. but did not push it or try to pry into the issue but let it slide. Pawl closed his eyes a moment to let the feeling subside and pass him as he opened them he was void of any odd thoughts. “No, I have not, but I heard Vulcans can link minds in this way. I was told its a personal thing and at times could be rather intimate.” Pawl said feeling the personal closeness he was not remotely ready for himself. That might be what he felt moments earlier when he suggested the idea. “I am sorry doctor if I made you uncomfortable. that was not the intention. Any other questions you wish to ask me?” Pawl finished quickly as he tried to change the subject. “Shall I return later to get the physical?” Pawl Inquired. ” shall we proceed with the questions and the physical? ”

Lt Jg Pawl Batario - Jo Engineer

“It is quite alright,” replied Kastarak, unsure of why he was saying exactly that. It was not his usual way of phrasing, more of a human phrase that he had picked up. It just seemed to fit the awkwardness of the situation. When Kastarak started psychiatry back on New Vulcan, all his clients were Vulcans, and as such, there would be a Vulcan–Vulcan interaction. Mr Batario was the first psychological assessment he would make on his own, and as such it was difficult, more difficult than he had imagined, to interview a non-Vulcan. Had Mr Batario been human, maybe it would have been easier. This case was definitely one he would bring up with his supervisor.

“Yes, we will move on. I’d like us to return to your opening statement – you said that you have no chronic conditions, no scars or broken bones, but that you have had your ‘fair share of twisted ankles’. Could you say anything about that, or would there anything else as your medical history that you would like to add? Any medication? Allergies? History of surgery?”

– Ensign Kastarak (doctor/counselor)

“I have been fortunate not to come down with any allergies or surgeries this far. The only medications I ever took were for mild pain from the hard twist to my ankle. I was a bit of a clutz in my youth. I am glad I grew out of it. I have had a betazoid variant of the flu. other than that I have been lucky.” Pawl said calmly to the doctor.
