As Mr. Applegate went to the mess hall after everything happened, he found a seat to sit at and he pulled his book out of his pocket. He didn’t really know what kind of book it is cause it was a new book that he never read before. He wanted to do something that makes him feel comfortable after having so much work that he had done on the ship. Although, he knows that the fact that it’s different.

Mr. Applegate started to crack open his new book that he never read before and secondly he knew that he was going to like it. He’s actually enjoying the book cause it’s something that he never has read before. The title of the book is Moby Dick and it’s about a captain that lost his leg against the white whale.

He then got up and got a cup of black coffee and started to drink it and got back to his book. He didn’t know what else he wanted to do so he just read his book and drank his coffee and just sat there and enjoyed his time.

“Mr. Applegate–” an abrupt, booming voice emerged from slightly behind him, “–I didn’t expect to see you today. How are you?”

If Todd turned, he might notice a familiar emerald-skinned man approaching at a leisure pace with a bowl and a clear mug filled with what looked like black tea in his hands. He smiled.

“I couldn’t help but notice you were reading,” he plopped down (wholly uninvited) on the seat across from him, “is that a real book?”

Most novels were digitized, accessible from any number of Interplanetary libraries, so to see Todd with an actual book offered some excitement. Was it a relic, he wondered, or a copy refurbished by modern technology? He chose not to ask… yet.

— Sega’a

“Hello. It’s a pleasure to see you today. And yes. It’s a real book. One of my favorite ones by far.” He replied.

Ensign Applegate

“Oh?” Sega’a sipped at his tea with a hint of intrigue in his green eyes. He tilted his head to try and glimpse the name, but his shadow obscured any clear image. “What book?” He asked. “And what do you like about it?”

— Sega’a

“Oh it is Moby Dick. I just find it intriguing. That’s all.” He replied.

Ensign Applegate

“Huh,” Sega’a nodded and leaned back into his chair. He couldn’t say he ever read Moby Dick – classic Earth stories always felt a little preachy and a little confusing with their flowery language – but he could appreciate Todd’s interest. “Those are hard to come by these days,” he waved a hand at the novel, “where did you get it?”

— Sega’a

“I actually replicated it before leaving spacedock.” He replied.

Ensign Apllegate

“Neat!” Sega’a smiled, unaware that books were available for replication. He often resorted to PaDD-based texts and their harsh, white-ish pages that he often diluted with a change in display lighting. Were books easier to read? “What is the best novel you’ve read?”

— Sega’a

“Moby Dick. It’s the only book I’ve read.” He responded

Ensign Applegate.

Sega’a pinched the bridge of his nose, masking the twinge of annoyance in a gesture that looked like he was trying to thwart a sneeze. “Do you like theatre, Todd?” He asked. “I didn’t have access to many books growing up, but the colony my parents moved to had a huge drama presence.”

— Sega’a

“Theatre. Hmm. Well I’ve never thought of it at all. I uh. Never really wanted to do it at all.” He said.

Ensign Applegate.

“Oh…” Sega’a whispered, the slightest disappointment tugging his lips into a frown, “that’s fair. What do you like to do for fun?”

— Sega’a

“Hang alone. Although, having company and a girlfriend,” he said, “would be able to work out while I’m working. If you know what I mean.” He added.

Ensign Applegate.

“I’m not sure I do…” Sega’a scratched the back of his neck, “wait. Let’s backtrack just a little bit. You have a girlfriend?” He craned his neck, searching the mess hall for anyone who might be this mysterious woman. “Does she serve on Chernov?”

— Sega’a, a nosey but good-intentioned chef

“Well, I did have a girlfriend. She uh died. Although she was a good enough girlfriend for me cause she treated me well. Although, now that she’s gone, I have no one else.” He said.

Ensign Applegate.

Sega’a frowned, struggling to stave off the guilt that crept into his belly in a wave of grippy-ness. Had he asked the wrong question? He didn’t want to drudge up painful memories for Todd, but it seemed there was more apathy than grief. He wasn’t a psychologist, so he couldn’t say for sure, but the way he described her was… strange. Maybe Vulcan-raised humans had a different concept of death than the Orion people? Not that theirs was any less… unusual to spectators from other cultures.

“I… see,” Sega’a cleared his throat after several moments of uncomfortable silence. “I am sorry for your loss, Todd. We may not know each other well, but my door is always open for you.”

He paused to gather some semblance of composure before continuing.

“What about friends?” He asked. “I know we hit it off and there was that dinner with Kastarak. Is there anyone you like to spend time with?”

— Sega’a

“Not really. I don’t really do much. Just working and keeping myself busy.” He said. Didn’t even know that he might have answered the question wrong or right. But he did answer the question.

“You mean to tell me that there is nothing and no-one whose company you enjoy for fun?” Sega’a quirked a brow. “Mr. Applegate,” he clicked his tongue in playful disapproval, “we need to show you a good time. How do you feel about ping-pong?”

— Sega’a

“Ping-pong?” He wondered. “I have never played Ping-pong. I really didn’t play anything at all. I always kept to myself.” He said.

Ensign Applegate

“It’s an Earth game,” he explained with a certain fondness, “my bunkmates and I used to play for hours after gamma shift on the Antares. The concept’s pretty easy to grasp and it’s good fun. Care to join me after shift for a game?”

— Sega’a

“Oh um. Sure. Sounds nice.” He said.

Ensign Applegate

“Fantastic!” Sega’a leapt to his feet and snatched his PaDD from the table to pull up his schedule. “Hmm… I’m on dinner rotation tonight, so I should be out by 1900. How does 1930 in the Deck 5 Lounge sound for you?”

— Sega’a

“Sounds good to me Sega’a. I’ll meet you there.” He said to him as he smiled.

Ensign Applegate

“I look for–” he wavered when a notification appeared on the screen, “–ward to it. I’ve got to run to the bridge, but I’ll see you tonight, ok?”

He stuffed his PaDD under his arm and bade Todd farewell with a jovial grin before rushing to toss his cup in the recycler on his way to the corridor.
