Many months ago
Veteran crewmembers of the USS Chernov might be familiar with the name Umbri Zayne, the former Weapons Officer who basically disappeared from the ship without any notice. Long story short, they had a lot of things going on that weren’t dealt with before they came aboard the Chernov, and they quickly lost confidence in their abilities as a leader. Originally planning on resigning from Starfleet altogether upon leaving the Chernov, they wanted to make a quiet exit. The only person they told was Captain Taggart after asking him to keep their departure a secret.But after they left, Umbri couldn’t bring themselves to go through with their resignation. After all, they had worked so hard to get where they were before leaving. So instead, they decided to seek professional help at a psychiatric hospital on Earth, and those experiences changed them for the better. Umbri also managed to reconcile with their parents after receiving an apology for cutting them off. They decided to keep the name Umbri and reclaim their birth surname, Hawkins. After that, they trained with one of the Security instructors at Starfleet Academy to help them get back on their feet. Umbri also reached out to Captain Taggart with a formal request to rejoin the USS Chernov as a Security officer, which was enthusiastically accepted.
Present Day

They knew that the first thing they’d need to do was make a visit to the Captain. Grateful that the layout of the ship hadn’t changed, they took the turbolift to the correct floor and walked up to the Captain’s office. After doing a last-minute check on their uniform, they rang the doorchime.

Upon hearing the chime he put a PaDD down and yelled, “Come in!” Upon seeing Umbri with their new look he was in absolute shock, that is once he figured out who it was he was looking at. It took him a good full minute or two and she could’ve almost seen his gears grinding in his head. “Wow! Lieutenant Umbri! That is a very different and very nice look. I almost didn’t recognize you! Please come in and have a seat! I am very grateful that you are back here with us.” He said all of this while coming around his desk to shake their hand or give them a hug, which ever is more suitable for this occasion.

Umbri smiled as they hugged their Captain. “It’s good to be back, Sir,” they paused as they broke the hug, taking a seat across from him. “Gosh, so much has happened since I was last here. The biggest thing is that I’m not Umbri Zayne anymore. It’s Umbri Hawkins now. I reconciled with my family and decided to take back my birth surname. Also, the idea for my new look was a combination of my own and my mom’s. She suggested that I grow it out a little, and I decided to go redhead. It looks a lot more professional in my opinion. I also want to apologize for leaving so abruptly. I wasn’t in a good place at the time and honestly thought about resigning from Starfleet altogether. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it because I’ve worked too hard for this. So I got some help mentally and then worked with an instructor at the Academy to help get me back on my feet. I’m really glad to be back, Sir. I’ll fill whatever position you need me to,” they said.

He looked her straight in the eye and in a kind of serious tone, “Never apologize for getting better and never apologize for being you. Ok.” He smiled at her and then went to pour himself some coffee. “I only have coffee and water in my office, can I get you a cup of something?”
“Just water will be fine,” they said.
“Water it is.” He poured them a glass of water and handed it to them while sat back down across from them.
After taking a sip, “Well Lieutenant Hawkins. Welcome back and please resume your work as the Weapons Officer. You will be the Acting Weapons Officer until Lovejoy gets back from Holiday. Then after that you will be the Assistant Weapons Officer. How does that sound?”

Umbri nodded. “That sounds good,” they said.
Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Umbri Hawkins, Acting Weapons Officer
Smiling; “Great! I left your old room the way it was and you are more than welcome to it or another room of your choosing. Just say which ever and it will be done. I must say that it is great to have you back. Do you have any plans now that you are back?”

Umbri smiled. “I’ll just move back into my old room. It’ll be easier than moving into a new room and replicating everything all over again. As for my plans, I figured I’d catch up with T’Aria, Kastarak, and Sega’a. I never said goodbye to them before I left and I’ve got a lot of explaining to do,” they laughed.

“Sounds good. They would love to see and hear from you again. I will say this, they and no one else on this great ship of ours have no mallace against you. You are a loved member of this crew and ship. Be at peace while you’re here. Ok?”

Umbri nodded, smiling. “I understand, Captain,” they said.

“Good. Anything else Umbri?”
Chris
Umbri shook their head. “No, Sir. I take it that means I’m dismissed?” they asked.
