Snip!

Chris smiled.” “Thanks and you are welcome Kasterak. I am glad we had this non talk. Let’s do it again sometime. But you can come to me if you need anything ok. Have a good night.” He turned in the bed and tried to get comfy. “Thanks again for saving me.”

Chris

Non-talk? “But we did talk,” Kastarak quickly interjected. “And there is no need to thank me. I performed my duty, as you have done as captain, and will continue to do so, as soon as Dr Symar and I clear you for duty. Now, rest well, sir. I will be in my office, and Nurse Sutalo will do the rounds. He’ll check up on you shortly.”

– Dr Kastarak

“It’s a figure of speech… you know what. It’s fine doctor. But we all here are doing our duty, but it’s good to be recognized or at least given a thank you from time to time. I really do appreciate you all. Well done. “

“I see. Thank you, sir,” he replied, pausing before continuing: “I appreciate you, too.”

“And I appreciate you as well.” Chris smiled.

“Good work Doctor,” Symar gave a curt nod, not trying to show too much appreciation for the job the young Vulcan had just done.

OOC: Sorry about the AWOL folks! Those of my fellow Brits may know that it is still Panto season for some theatres in the UK Iwhich is stupid but there we are)

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“Thank you, sir. Shall we go to the office and write up our notes?” asked Kastarak, hinting that Symar might need a break to un-mask and be himself.

– Dr Kastarak

Captain Chris Taggart CO

– Ensign/Doctor Kastarak

Chris

“I will join you shortly Ensign, good work.” Symar rose and stepped out of the main Sickbay for a moment, letting out a huge sigh.

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Kastarak led the way to the office hidden behind the “open Sickbay”. It was private enough for him and Symar to talk, yet Kastarak could still have an eye out for any events happening in the Sickbay through a window. Nurse Sutalo was out doing the rounds and preparing equipment for an up-coming away team to the surface of Qo’noS.

Kastarak went to the synthesizer, got himself some water, 60 degrees Celsius hot, and seated himself down on a chair.

– Ensign Kastarak

Slipping into the office while Taggart was resting, “You did a good job in there, if I wasn’t so distracted I’d recommend you for a promotion.”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“It is of no consequence,” said Kastarak softly. “The importance lies in your health. How are you doing?”

– Kastarak

Symar felt a hand touch the Sickbay office desk, “Physically? Never better, mentality is a whole different ball game.”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Kastarak had never heard the metaphor “a whole different ball game” before, but he understood it. Had Symar taken refuge in earthling speech patterns? Did it provide comfort for him, a way to describe his inner experiences that the rigidity and structure of Vulcan patterns would prohibit?

”In what way? How is your mental health?” He asked, concerned for the welfare of his supervisor, colleague, but, above all, friend.

  • Ensign Kastarak

“Suffice it to say, I’m a little shaken up after reliving all of the things I went through in my past… I would appreciate a couple of sessions with you and Commander T’Aria to… unpack everything.”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Kastarak listened carefully.

“That is fully understandable,” he said, “And I am amenable to such an arrangement. Commander T’Aria will likely be amenable too.”

He paused slightly.

“In the meantime, what can I do to support you today?”

– Dr/Ensign Kastarak

“Help me keep the facade alive, at least for now. I need time to work out what I’m going to say to the Captain.”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“Yes, sir,” said Kastarak while nodding affirmatively. He was considering whether to offer help in telling the captain, for example, by accompanying him to the meeting, as Kastarak was, when all things considered, Symar’s physician, and that the rules of medical secrecy compelled him to be quiet about Symar’s genetic and psychological profile. In any case, Symar was an excellent physician, and there had be no legal reason that would have allowed Kastarak to disclose the details.

After a pause, Kastarak spoke again.

“Shall we go check on our patient?”

– Dr / Ensign Kastarak

Symar’s face changed, as if replacing the Vulcan mask that he had only let slip moments earlier, “After you Doctor Kastarak.”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

Kastarak rose quietly from his chair and moved out to the may bay area, and walked up to the bed where the captain lay.

“Captain,” he said gently, announcing his arrival. “How are you feeling?” He began scanning the captain’s brain and body. If all things were looking good, the captain would be able to be discharged.

– Ensign / Dr Kastarak

Chris turned in the bed and yawned. “Pretty good. Thanks to you two. I really do appreciate it. How are you two doing?”

CHris

“I am satisfied. You are healthy,” said Kastarak flatly, while looikng at his tricorder. He turned to the captain and showed him a small Betazed-originating button-looking object in his hand, “we will discharge you from Sickbay, to your quarters. Please wear this neural recorder for 48 hours. It will transmit data on your brainwaves and other vital statistics that the computer can analyse. We would be notified if anything is out of the order. The condition for your discharge and reinstatement of your commission as captain is that you wear this neural transmitter for 48 hours. We will call you if anything is out of order. If not, you may simply remove it after 48 hours from now and continue with your duties. Do you understand what I have told you? And do you consent to this arrangement?”

– Ensign Kastarak (physician / counsellor)

Taking the neural transmitter and placing it on himself he nodded. “I agree good sir. Is there anything else that you need for me?”

Chris

“I am satisfied. Do you have any questions to us?”

– Dr/Ens Kastarak

Chris shook his head. “No sir. Just a suggestion.”

“You should smile more. You are an awesome and amazing doctor. Take some credit for yourself once in a while. You both are going to go places. I know it. And I am happy to know that since the both of you will out live me by over a hundred years, that you two will be able to save many more lives and inspire many more beings.”

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

Kastarak sensed the captain wanted a more sincere and open-hearted conversation, and he tried to convey as well as he could to the captain:

“Thank you,” said Kastarak, still not smiling. “Your words are kind. I may not physically smile, it is not the way of my people, and in these days, I must honour the deaths of the billions of my people by following their teachings. That said, sir, I feel the emotional warmth you convey. I place meaningfulness and great value on this experience.”

– Ensign Kastarak

“Well said Doctor! I know that they would’ve been very proud in their own ways of you.” He said getting up and placing his hand on Kasteraks shoulder. “I know I am. Now if there is not anything else, I am jonesing to get out of here and I will be on the bridge catching up on everything.”

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

“Naturally. But if you feel any indication of ill health, please some back here. Dr Symar, Nurse Sutalo and I will be here”, he replied, surprised by how soothing the touch on his shoulder felt. Oxytocin was immediately released within him. It was a nicer feeling than he remembered, but he purged it quickly, controlling the release of oxytocin. The rush subsided.

“You may now go, captain,” he reiterated, now in a serene state of mind, devoid of emotion.

– Ensign Kastarak
