On this morning, Kastarak had not slept at all. It would be his third night without sleep. The captain had been advising him the other day, but still, it didn’t seem to help much at this point. Kastarak felt distracted and his head wasn’t working properly (did it ever though?) and with a pad in his hand, he suddenly stopped in his tracks, three centimetres from meeting Pawl Batario’s forehead.“Mr Batario,” he said, “Forgive me, I did not see you. Are you alright?”

“I am ok Ensign I should be asking if you are ok?” Pawl asked calmly and serine. “Whats on your mind Doc.?” Pawl asked carefully not trying to pry into the mans thoughts.

Pawl’s calm and serene state of mind surprised Kastarak, but in a good way. It gave him a sense of peace and calm, too, and he felt some of the anxiety (that he had apparently felt but not registered) subside.
Batatio’s question was an honest one, he could feel, not one asked for politeness, and therefore Kastarak ought to answer it with the same dignity that Pawl’s question was asked in.
“Very good. Thank you for your concern, Mr Batario. I have been unable to sleep lately, and that is why I have been absent-minded. Did I startle you?”
He felt an urge to ask Pawl to join him for breakfast, but knowing nothing of Pawl’s schedule or desires, he could not think of a socially acceptable way to frame that question, and stayed quiet on it – for now.
