Since they had returned to the Chernov, Umbri hadn’t gotten a chance to spend time with their friend and fellow Security officer, NE Lucian Vyctor. When he mentioned his desire to have a jam session with just the two of them in the crew lounge, Umbri eagerly agreed. Pretty much everyone knew that Umbri was an excellent pianist and composer, but it was a little-known fact that Lucian was an amazing cellist. Putting the two of them together would make for quite the performance for anyone who happened to stop by the crew lounge that night. So Umbri and Lucian met up in their established venue, tuned together, and decided to start with something classical (OOC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlYnUyPq_XA).

Lucian had told Umbri that he played, but they had no idea he was this good. The amount of control over the fast passages and the way he smoothly transitioned between notes both made for an incredible performance. When they finished playing, Umbri looked at their crewmate in shock. “You didn’t tell me you could play like that!” they exclaimed. Lucian chuckled. “Oh, that was nothing. You know Paint it Black?” he asked. Umbri’s jaw dropped but they handed him the sheet music for an arrangement of exactly what he was referring to. “Bring it, Vyctor,” they said. Lieutenant (jg) Umbri Hawkins & NE Lucian Vyctor, Security Officers

Dawson had heard that two of the security officers were planning a sort of impromptu concert and thought it a splendid way to get to know his officers. He’d be risking his life with them, so he had better get to know them. He came in as they finished their Mozart and was honestly surprised by how amazing it sounded. Then they moved onto an arrangement of Rolling Stones’s Paint It Black and Dawson became thoroughly impressed. He sat at a table near the stage and leaned back, ready to enjoy some wonderful music.

Kastarak came next. He remembered how when he had been new on the Chernov, there was a ‘jam’ on the ship, and that was how he got to know his good friend Sega’a, the chef-cum-yeoman. Umbri had been there too. These were good memories, they anchored him in his identity, of his friendship with Umbri, Sega’a, and with the ship itself. He was at home.

He moved up to Lucian and Umbri.

“Good evening, Mx Hawkins, Mr Vyctor.” He had not spoken to Lucian since the crew’s reststop on Risa. He was a colourful person – both figuratively and literally. “I regret that I missed your last piece. Might you play something more?”

Kastarak then saw Mr Dawson sitting by a table of his own. Kastarak moved to Mr Dawson.

“Good evening Mr Dawson, while Mx Hawkins and Mr Vyctor are playing, may I sit with you?”

“Of course!” Dawson said gesturing to the seat next to him. “I came by to show support to some of my Junior Officers, and am pleased to find I have quite the talented bunch.” He took a sip from his drink and then said, “I saw you talking with them, and since you clearly have some rapport and have been here longer than I, wondered if you could tell me a bit about them. A Starfleet Record only says so much.”

Lt. Q Dawson, CWO

“Indeed, you do Lieutenant. And I would be most happy to tell you about your team.” The captain said smiling as he was coming out of the small galley by the stage with a tray and wearing a tuxedo and a white cloth draped over his right arm that was carrying the tray. Getting next to the table. “I’m just kidding as I know you were talking to Kastarak. I like to play servant and help out at these function and give Sega’a and others like him time off to enjoy these as most of them play. Sega’a is very good as Kastarak will tell you. Kastarak himself is skilled.” Chris smiled. “So please gentlemen. Think about your drink and food orders and tell me on my way back. I have drinks to deliver.” He walked a few steps away then turned around. “Mr. Dawson. Since this is your first time seeing me like this, right now I am Chris, your butler for the evening. Ok?”

The captain was a strange but endearing fellow. Kastarak had often struggled to make sense of the captain, but had in the past year simply begun to accept the captain for all his human quirkiness. He did not need understanding the captain, he simply had to understand that this was the way the captain was.

He then went to a table with a few other crew members and began setting down their drinks. “There you all are. Will there be anything else?” Chris said and they all shook their heads. “OK. I will be off to the next table and feel free to flag me down if you anything else.” He bowed and then headed back to their table.

“Ok. Gents. What will it be? Sega’a will only allow me to make Bowling Alley food as he doesn’t trust me with his kitchens. So burgers, fries, hot dogs and the like.”

Chris

Pok tar, please. I understand Sega’a has perfected his interpretation of it. I have been looking forward to tasting it”, Kastarak said, taking the captain up on his offer of being butler for the night. “And a cup of redspice tea, thank you.”

After the captain had left, Kastarak turned to Mr Dawson, ready to answer his question.

“You know Umbri Hawkins, previously known as Umbri Zayne, and Lucian Vyktor professionally. We shared a cabin during our first months on the Chernov, arriving both at the same time as newly graduated ensigns. They are musically gifted, and we have a bond of friendship. They are from a place on Earth called Massachusetts. Perhaps you have heard of it.”

“Mr Vyctor and I are not close. He is a loyal character, though, always kind and respectful. He enjoys fantasy literature from Earth – a concept that I have struggled to understand and he has tried, without success, to explain to me why it is enjoyable. He is also a dancer and a runner – I imagine sparring with him will be a choreographic experience. Maybe you should ask him to it. Like you, he is English, but more colourful. As you can see…” Kastarak pointed to Vyctor’s pink hair.
