The attempt to isolate nanites from the tetrahedral ship was successful as was the attempt to transport them. The nanites were transported into a containment field that was keeping them in stasis.

GM

The CSO came back to the Odin and immediately running diagnostics on the nanites and then cross-referencing all data with known Borg technology. As he commenced the tests, he tapped his comm badge. =/\= CSO to Commander Solark and Lieutenant Shrant. Please meet me in the Lab as soon as possible. =/\=

Ch’rthyniq, CSO

=/\=I am coming,=/\= replied Solark.

  • Solark

The diagnostics showed that the nanites were different from the nanites of the Borg. The nanites were designed to maintain the ship but they were not able to handle organic tissue. Thus they were not able to change any sentient being into a drone.

  • GM

Ch’ethyniq scanned the nanites to see if they were trying to communicate to the alien vessel since they had been removed. He also began a metallurgical and electrical analysis to try and find out their power source and to see if they could be classified into separate groups by function or components.

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

Communication was detected among the nanites but the nanites were not able to send any message outside the Odin.
-GM

“At least there’s that.” he said to himself. Ch’ethyniq began to compare and contrast the nanites present in the lab to known nanite designs from the computer’s database.

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

The nanites were similar in design to the Borg with one major deficiency: they were not able to cause the chain reaction that would assimilate organic species with cybernetic parts. The nanites were programmed to maintain the systems of the ship. With the programs found in the nanites, it was possible to reconstruct the blueprints of the tetrahedral ship.
-GM

Ch’ethyniq stared in amazement for a moment and then tapped his commbadge =/\= Lab to Bridge. I have something to show the Command staff that may help the away team. I need someone to come take a look. =/\= and began to compile the schematics of the alien vessel.

Ch-ethyniq, CSO

Solark entered the science labs just as Ch’ethyniq was reporting to the bridge. “What have you discovered?” he asked.
-Solark

“Commander, look at this.” and he brought up the scans of the nanites. “These are the samples I pulled from the vessel. They are similar to Borg technology, but have no effect on biological matter, so… no assimilation capability. I believe they are used to maintain and repair the vessel, Sir. So much so, that I have used them to compile a full schematic of the ship itself.” and he brought up the compilation of data that he had sorted and configured into a workable schematic. “Each one has the capability to not only maintain the vessel, but to communicate with each other. I have not detected any communication to the ship, however.”

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

“Interesting,” replied Solark. “This means that any communications we make with our away team would be easily detected as there is no communications between the nanites and the ship. We should relay the ship schematics to the away team so that they can get on with their mission. Yet, there is a possibility that any communications we make with them might be intercepted. They did interfere and remove weapons from our away team members …,” Solark said thoughtfully. Turning to the CSO, he asked, “Lieutenant, have you analysed the schematics?” Pointing to one part of the schematics, he said, “At first look I can see the power source … What we need to do is to access the databanks. Now where could they be?”

Solark speculated that the ship with no life signs might be running itself. Accessing the databanks or computer core might help them understand how the ship is operating.

Solark

Riss looked over the schematics for a moment and said “I am no Engineer, Sir. But it seems that here - ” and he pointed at a centralized room with the appropriate power requirements and climate controls to keep processors cool, “- would be my first supposition. But if this is a truly automated ship or drone, Sir; why would there be passageways and areas for beings larger than nanites to move around? By that I mean we use drones in some of our Science vessels, but they are built around systems and then enclosed in their housings. Even probes larger than a shuttle don’t have space for humanoids to move about in them.”

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

“That would seem to be the mystery that needs to be solved,” remarked Solark. “But the first hurdle would be to give the away team an instruction that would not be understood by the ship.”

-Solark

Riss’s head whipped around quickly. “I have a solution for that, I think. Our Security Chief comes from a… less technologically dependent Earth culture. I don’t know if she knows the system or not, as it is quite primitive.” and he called up a file on the computer and showed it to Solark. “It’s called Morse Code. A simple but effective way of spelling out words with a single tone broken up into short and long sounds.”

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

“If the ship does not have that code on file, it would take them some time to decipher it. Depending on the length that was sent and their knowledge of Earth’s language, it might take between 40 minutes to 2 hours for the computer to figure out the message,” said Solark. “I believe T’Pon, a Vulcan cadet in the 23rd century Starfleet Academy took just 18 minutes to decipher the Morse Code. Of course, she was given first draft of the UFP’s charter and it was a long document.”

  • Solark

“we don’t have to send them the file. We can send them directions. Tell them what they are looking for, and then send them directions based on our scans of where they are in the ship. That way it would take even longer for the other vessel to realize what we are doing, correct?”

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

“This is only conjecture,” said Solark. “However, I believe that the risk is worth taking. The probability for success is 92%. The probability that the ship will decipher will be lower at about 6% if the directions are concise enough.”
Solark

The CSO nodded and opened a comms channel to the Security Chief aboard the alien ship. Rather than speaking, he began broadcasting a tone broken up into small < * > and long < - > sounds. “I am asking ‘Can you hear me?” he explained to Solark.

=/\= -- / - / - (pause) -– /—/- (pause) / * / -/ - (pause) – / * =/\=

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

“Who would be the first to recognise the code?” wondered Solark aloud, considering all the members of the away team.
-Solark

“Odds are great it will be the Security Chief, I believe.” Riss replied.

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

About this time, Kirshara walked into the room. It was clear he was a Vulcan because of his ears and the lack of any emotion. Walking up to the Chief Science Officer he repored, “Excuse me, sir… Lt.(j.g.) Kirshara reporting for duty; may I be of assistance?

Kirshara

Riss’s antennae turned and faced the new arrival, but his head didn’t move. Unlike most Andorians, the CSO was albino. As he continued tapping on the comms panel. “Depends. What is your background in nanotechnology?” and then his head whipped up and pale blue eyes seemed to bore into the Scientist. “OH! Do you know Morse Code?” he asked excitedly.

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

The Vulcan looked at his superior with puzzlement in his eyes; he responded, “Sir, if memory serves me, Morse Code is an ancient form of earth communications. I remember a class on it at Starfleet Academy.”

Kirshara

The CSO looked at the newly arrived Scientist and said “Thats what it is, but do you know it?” he asked as he kept tapping away at the comms.

Ch’ethyniq, CSO

Solark raised his eyebrow. The Vulcan scientist would obviously remember the class at the Academy. He kept quiet just to see how his fellow Vulcan would answer.

“Are we ready to implement the plan?” Solark asked. “We will need to inform the Captain and do this as soon as possible. The away team might be in danger.”
